The suspension could be good but I just feel like the premium is moving to long travel full coil.

if the seats never bothered you I would take one. I unfortunately can’t ever own another gm until they change them

Well the market has brought me back to my senses! I will just have to wait till March at the latest hopefully!
I found some 2021 Raptor’s, but all above MSRP! One closest to me had what should have been an MSRP of 83k and they wanted $110k with 800 miles on it!

I wish you the best of luck finding a pro without a dealer mark up . I’m not being sarcastic .

If you’re not on a dealer list you’re prob not getting one this year. Lots of dealers are 10-15 deep and already have folks willing to pay 5-10 over msrp

I have been number 1 on list at highest volume dealership in Iowa with promise of MRSP.
I just put a deposit on a Raptor as well, all dealerships in this area are 5k to 15k above MSRP, but I found one at MSRP. I picked the options. Will see if Toyota or Ford gets it done first!

    Hey OP,

I’m in the exact same predicament as you are as I’ve ordered several trucks during the pandemic. Now my decisions lies between a 22 Tundra TRD pro and a 22 Raptor.

I came from a 20 Gen 2 raptor and hands down it was the best truck I have ever owned. Even more fun than my built 2020 Tundra and it’s tuned.

So, as I ponder my decision, which I need to make in a couple of days, I thought I’d write my thoughts out here to help me and those in the same situation:

22 Tundra TRD Pro - toyota reliability and demand tips the scale in favor of this truck. The Hybrid system helps it deliver more power in its stock form. The heritage and loyalists will keep this truck in demand for years to come.

The downsides to this truck is the small tires and mediocre suspension. I’d upgrade tires to 35’s at a minimum so that’s another $2k. Also, real world mpgs is worse than the raptor from feedback I received (14-15). Last downside in my opinion is the it’s still a first model year of production with no change to the 23 models so reliability is yet to be seen.

22 Raptor - the leap from the Gen 2 to the Gen 3 is exciting as it made a really good truck even better. The suspension and ride on this truck is truly best in class. The power is great and it’s a mature and proven machine. Yes, ford reliability and cam phasers (fixed primarily by the 2020 MY) are still a concern for long term ownership.

Downsides: it’s a Ford lol. I’m all seriousness, build quality is an issue just like Toyota but often worse. Also, slightly less power but more storage in the rear.

My thoughts and conclusion: both the TRD Pro and Raptor are highly desired vehicles with pros and cons with both models. If I wanted to keep this truck forever, which I’m not, the answer is clear = Toyota Tundra. If you’re one that gets a new truck every few years and enjoy the moment, then my pick leans towards the raptor.

….with that said, which will I choose? Comment down below and let me know what your thoughts are as well. 140D99ED-C1D0-4AAB-91B1-9F85D94F497C.jpg E64F7B47-2E64-4165-8D58-8C2C36EF9EA1.jpg

I mostly agree with your assessment but there lies more demand in the raptor. When the pro first came out it was in high demand but it’s declined.

the raptor has been in high demand since the Gen 3 launched and has only gone up.

Very true. If you’re willing to wait, you can get trd pros at MSRP or with a slight ADM. I find it harder to get a raptor at MSRP.

Raptor, better truck in basically every category. I'm a Toyota guy but Ford has the perfect formula with that. Not to mention its value retention.

Update, I got my Raptor August 17th after ordering end of December. My Pro came in and I went to check it out. I was honestly so disappointed, I didn’t even drive it. I have 1500 miles on the Raptor and zero regrets. My 2016, 2019 Tacoma’s and 2021 Tundra Pro were good, but this Raptor is impressive! Attached pic is me last week at Raptor Assault hosted by Ford Performance Racing School, complimentary. Full day of showing the capabilities and off roading. Even got to jump it twice!

Amazing! Your decision solidifies mine as well. The Raptor assault school is a huge benefit that comes with buying a raptor as well.

My Raptor should be ready by Tuesday so if that shows up first then that’s what I’ll get. Honestly, I hate feeling like the tundra trd pro is a compromise…..it’s just on a whole different level (and no comparison) to a raptor.

Same. I guess the good thing is I’ll still have my 2020 tundra and is still part of the toyota family.

I too own a '21 Gen 3 Raptor with the 37PP, and there's no comparison here. The Raptor is way ahead of the the TRD pro off the lot. Absolutely love the Raptor.

where did you fish? I’m installing 2 Yakima double hauls today between conference calls

That mileage is way off for the trd, I’m getting 16-23 depending on how fast and aggressive I am driving with my lifted, 35’s and loaded bed/ topper/ decked system

I drive pretty consistent and I live around hills so my mpg is expected to be less than EPA.

21 pro I got 10.1 average city and 15-16 highway

    21 f150 V8 I got 15-16 city and 20 highway

    22 crv I get 35 city and 32-33 highway

22 pro I got 13.5 city and around 19 highway. I did expect a little better city on the pro something at least 16 or so

eco mode around town is super helpful with the hybrid, I also drive it like a hybrid- power up to speed then keep it in hybrid mode as long as possible, coast into stops to keep momentum, etc. best I got was over 30mpg one day running errands (long drives though)

I’m sure I could do better. But I drove like I did the prior trucks. Especially the 21 pro. Miss that exhaust note

Respectfully disagree. Test drive a 3 year old Raptor vs a Tundra and you notice significant issues with quality and wear.

the Raptor and Pro aren’t really in the same ballpark, though. Yes the Pro has Fox shocks but everything is turned down so much by comparison. I mean the standard tire on a Pro is a 32” Toyota-specific Wildpeak. If they were serious about competing with the Raptor, they would have put on 35” K02s or Wranglers at a minimum.

don’t get me wrong, though. I love my Pro. I had a similar debate earlier in the year. Should I just buy a new Raptor or wait for the Pro. I went to a Ford dealer and specifically asked to drive used Raptors. I drove three. While the motor and transmission seemed like beasts, the interiors were horrible and didn’t age well at all. So many overly worn parts, squeaks, broken plastic, blown out seats. For a $70k truck, I felt like those shouldn’t be issues. It therein lies the difference between a Toyota and Ford. LoL

Still pleased with my decision. One recall on wiper motor, but mine has been operating as it should. Will do it at next BCB849BB-7EE5-4A02-BD12-E6CB0FB9F04C.jpgoil change. Interior quality is much nicer in the Raptor, went and looked at my allocation and passed.

These trucks shouldn’t even be compared to each other, I had a Gen2 and it was an amazing beast, I put in for a Gen3 allocation, but ended up getting the Tundra due to price point (and my love for Toyota), nice looking Raptor though

Raptors are amazing, but I think in a tier above the TRD Pro. The TRD is more ZR2, Rebel, at4x, and Titan Pro. Off road luxury package, not a performance package, like the TRX, maybe even the Silverado Bison (in terms of additional packaging, not performance).

There is no comparison. Nothing is in the same league with TRX and Raptor and Raptor R. There just isn’t (excluding some aftermarket builds). Not straight from the factory.
Add that to the fact that Raptors and TRX (in most cases) are still being marked up and it separates them even more.

The fact that a Raptor R on 37’s weighs less than a TRD pro helps put them in different leagues too.

Even if Toyota built a Raptor/TRX competitor, it would weigh as much or more than a trx and still only have 4xx hp. It would be a dog performance wise. The TRD Pro isnt anything special even.

I had an 18 Raptor. By the time I dumped it at 40k miles, it had a failing sunroof, timing chain replaced, wastegate rattle, had to also replace the rear leaf springs, front seat, steering wheel, and the truck was overheating occasionally with a suspected radiator or Head gasket failure. Most unreliable piece of garbage I ever owned. Felt like a 150k miles Toyota after 40k miles. It was a better truck in terms of capabilities and attention to detail, but was useless otherwise. In 2018 you could get one for invoice, the prices people are paying now... Proves that making money doesn't require judgement or intelligence.
