Looking to have a sprinkler system installed front and backyard 1/3 of an acre. According to one company I got a quote from it was a fairly simple system. Did a little research online that showed 1500-3500 on the high end so expected something in the middle. So far I’ve gotten two quotes one for $6500 and the other $7300 so I’m having a little bit of sticker shock, is this about normal now?

Were there plans included in the quote to show the work being done?
I can see how one may think it's a fairly easy install/job, but costs can add up quick!
I can see potentially how material may cost $1500-$3500 on some jobs....but it all depends on what is being done and all. Need a lil more info on whats being done.

    Too many, but not enough....
for that price, i would get a couple dump trucks full of small stones and save yourself maintenance cost and water bills. But then again, I am in the process of getting rid of most of my grass besides the back yard, so I may be biased.

You can easily do this yourself or explain to your hired help what and how to do it. Do some homework, buy a few tools, hire a couple of guys from a homeless shelter and pay them daily. It's not rocket science at all.

2 well paid homeless guys for 3 days is the answer. You can also find some guys on a commercial job and offer them a weekend cash money job. They will be happy and you will save big money. Just my opinion.

Do they need to dig a well and pump it? I saw the quote for my system from the prior owner.. similar plot size and head count... and it was higher than what you are seeing.

Having dug around, repaired valves, etc... its not an easy job to DIY and entire irrigation system.

Contrary to what others are saying it is more complicated than hiring a couple homeless guys. My advice is to ask for an as built/plan. Some contractors will cut corners and not have head to head coverage and matched precipitation rate which results in dry, or over watered areas.

Agreed, its not a job for a couple of homeless guys.

Fwiw, I stated do your homework and direct a few guys to do the labor intensive portions. I did this stuff for a living and paid for many bottles of cheap wine! It isn't hard and renting a trencher can make it a breeze if you want to go with that option.

BTW, use a gauge to test your household water pressure before you begin to determine the number of heads for each leg. You probably don't want more than about 5-6 heads per leg. Also the more simple pop up heads with brass nozzles will provide you with the best long term solution. Roto heads look pretty when operating but are expensive and die.

Measure and draw your yard with an architectecural scale ruler, draw your coverage of circles, semi circles, and 1/4s with a school math type of compass to assure coverage. The scale drawing will help you determine footage of pipe. Use schedule 40 PVC not class 200 which is thin wall crap! Now you are already off to a great start!

Sorry I don’t have the square footage, but the back yard was about $5500 and the front was $6300. If I had to guess the back is around 500 to 600 square feet and the front was around 750 to 900 square feet.

You and me both! Some of the quotes in this thread are making me think about getting back into the game. Quick easy money and if you offer a discount for cash.....

You need to know you the gallons per minute of the meter. This will determine the number of heads on a zone, and the gallons per minute each head can be set to. PSI does not have that big of an influence. Most municipalities guarantee at least 40 psi. Your local water company can give you this information. Depending on where you are at PVC/Poly pipe may be more prevalent. Also, most homeowners who install a system do not meet local cross connection regulations, which could result in a fine.

You can do it yourself, but consulting a professional is best.

Material has gone up drastically in the last year. PVC alone went up 70% and glue has gone over 150% just to name a couple cost increases.

Everything has gone up! I build houses now and again, so I know really well what is going on with the cost of supplies, how to get things done, and how to save a few dollars doing it. But thanks for sharing your comments with the others who are without the knowledge.

GPH or gallons per hour can be calculated with PSI and pipe diameter. PSI does play into design.

Forward looking camera, Stub Antenna, 3M clearshield. A few other non lifted items.
Some areas require a double check valve to prevent back flow. That will add another cost I did not see in your estimate. They can cost $150-300 for the basic ones, to $$$$ for special ones. I’m planning on doing my own as the bids in WA are crazy. I did my last system on our home we sold a year ago, it lasted 29 years… which is quite surprising. Do not install sprinklers next to a driveway…. DAMHIK. Also, some water districts require yearly inspections on the sprinkler check valve..a other $$ expense.
