Stock Tires on TRD Pro

I've seen a couple articles/videos making a note that the stock Falken Wildpeak AT3s are not the one's that you would get off the shelf. Anyone know if this is true? It would make sense why some owners have seen tread wear way too quick

 

Theyre a custom one just for toyota, rated for fewer miles and WITHOUT A SNOW RATING

 

Does that mean the tread also is not as aggressive looking? I've seen other Falkens Wildpeaks and they definitely look different.

 

My guess is it's a cheaper rubber rcompound

 

With these being a special tire for Toyota, I’m guessing Discount Tire would not take these on trade for a different tire. Has anyone tried to read them?

 

I’ve confirmed this with my dealer as I wait on my PRO.

They are not the same tire. They are made for Toyota. The tread is different and they’re only an M+S rated tire and do not come with the mountain or snow flake.

 

Probably P rated instead of LT.

They did the same thing with the 4Runner TRD Pro…it had P-rated Terra Grapplers. Wildly different tire than an LT Nitto TG. It was more comfy on the highway but severely weak off-road.

 

P rated, different compound, less tread depth.

 

How do the driving characteristics differ on-road between the stock Falken and the off the rack version? I'll be doing the majority of my driving on paved roads, but I want to get into off-roading a bit more (think dirt trails and mud. not boulder crawling).

The tread isnt deep, rubber is soft. I also noticed my front tires are canted in, I'll be taking back to dealer to make sure that is to spec

 

This is the #1 reason why to dump stock tires as fast as fiscally allowable.

 

i bought tires inside the first 2 months of owning my vehicle. Its sad that despite being 40% more expensive now that they're still are spec'd with garbage that have no business being on roads that experience real weather.

 

Generally speaking, no OEM tire is as good as one you buy off the shelf. Some tire stores sell OEM equivalents and the normal ones, and the OEM are always cheaper.

Well I just ordered four Wildpeak A/T3W tires that are snowflake/mountain rated. Now I just need my truck.

 

Just to chime in, the non-TRD pros can be had with the optional 20" all terrains, which are the Wildpeak AT3wA. As mentioned, this is a OE spec Wildpeak that is not similar to the regular, "aftermarket" AT3w's that we show on our site. The 20" optionals do contain a less aggressive tread design.

Like any OE tire, tires have to meet goals/criteria set forth by the vehicle manufacturer. This can include acceptable noise levels, comfort levels, handling, rolling resistance (translates to MPGs), weight, and performance. Since the aftermarket tires typically don't meet OE criteria, OE spec tires are created to catered specifically to the vehicle it will be equipped on. As such, the OE spec Wildpeaks come with less tread & softer compound in order to meet these criteria.

The TRD Pro Wildpeak AT3w 18" is based on our aftermarket Wildpeak AT3w, where tread design is the same. However, much like the AT3wA 20"s, it too had to sacrifice tread depth and compound in order to meet toyota's goals/criteria.

Ordering the aftermarket Wildpeak AT3w, whether it be LT size or non-LT size, will have more tread to start with in comparison to the OE spec tires, along with 3 peak winter rating and the tread design referenced on our site.

From what we have seen on the alignment specs spreading around the forum and facebook groups,Toyota has set some positive camber to the front suspension, which causes the appearance that the tires are slanted in at the bottom, causing excessive shoulder wear on the tires. Just something to keep in mind

 

Only cost me $500 to upgrade to the better and larger version of the Falken Wildpeaks. Got the 285/75/18 for $332 each from walmart.com with free delivery. Sold my stock tires for $900.

 

I too have noticed the positive camber on my Pro. What would be the reason for this? Better turning radius? Turning radius isn’t great to start. Once I replace my tires and get an alignment I’ll need to address this. Any recommendations?

 

To start, the off-the-rack/aftermarket versions will have a higher tread depth (13-14/32nds on P size/non-LT, 17-20/32nds on LT, depending on size). This may give some initial taller vehicle feel & slight squirm. However, from hearing from a employee with Limited and other enthusiast, ride quality didn't change much going from the OE spec.

Hopefully some fellow enthusiast can chime in on their aftermarket Wildpeaks or other brands.

 

Our OE team will be addressing Toyota soon regarding this. Once we receive an update as to why this is the case, we'll chime in.

In terms of speculation, it could be for suspension travel/articulation reasons (clearing fender during full compression).

I was unable to get a buyback for the OE take-off's on my PRO which meant I had to spend additional $$ on the original Wildpeak AT3wA's. It's annoying that I had spend dollars out of pocket, but what is equally annoying is that I had no idea that the tires were different and for where I live I need the 3 peak winter rating. It would be helpful if the OE tires did not share the same naming convention as the tires that come with the 3 peak winter rating.

 

Can confirm the Falken Wildpeaks on the TRD Pro are actually Falken Mildpeaks. I get it... saves manufacturer a bunch of money, but it's a real OEM disappointment. No Mtn/Snowflake icon and def less tread depth.

 

@Falken QA Any update on your team addressing the camber issue on the TRD Pro's with Toyota?

 

OE team and Toyota are still in review regarding the issue. They are thankful that we notified and helping them understand the issue.

 

MPG, rolling resistance, weight, handling/traction, noise, comfort, and cost are some factors that come to mind with what can be accepted for OE application. The shallower tread depth and compound, among other things, kept the OE Wildpeak from achieving the 3 peak icon.

 

Thanks for updates. Im certainly not buying new tires until @Falken QA or Toyota can tell me what's at fault, the alignment or the OEM tires just being too soft and wear easily. No reason new tires on a brand new vehicle should be wearing this quickly and uneven

 

Is the estimated lifespan of the OEM lower than regular Wildpeaks? If so what is it?

Could you share the warranty information on this tire, specifically wear warranty please? I plan to change up to the 'real' thing when these wear out as I don't do serious off-road (mostly trail to get me to camping).

 

I have one tire that will technically balance via conventional means, but won't pass a roadforce balance and I can feel it on the road. Toyota Service won't do anything about it. It's driving me nuts and I'm about to just replace the full set with another brand.
