Felt and heard grinding coming front front end last night. Took to dealership this morning. Confirmed front diff is toast. Was full of filings and metal.
Have truck back hopefully don’t need 4wd (brutal snow and ice here right now) and new diff will be at least a couple weeks. Between all the rattles and some fit and finish issues I’ve had this sure isn’t like my previous tundras. Ugh. 12,000kms FWIW.

Sorry to hear it, OP. Seems like this is the first time I’m hearing of a diff grenading on the 3rd gen.

My old Suburban grenaded the rear diff at 220k miles. I had to limp home in 4wd using the front diff only. Not fun.

    Thanks!
I have been using 4WD sporadically, perhaps out of the 12k I have on the truck maybe a total of 500kms?
I wonder if something was frozen, we have been experiencing nasty weather. Cause felt the hop at full crank even in 2WD, almost like the system was not engaging/disengaging properly? Hopefully no other issues with TC or anything else. Have the truck back until new diff arrives, but we are driving on ice up here so 2WD is going to be a little painful.
Hopefully mine is the exception and this isn't seen more.

I'm an owner (not a proud one at all) of a 2022 Toyota Tundra Limited trim with 14,000 kms. I'm just north of Toronto and took my truck into the dealer today after hearing some noise from the front end which got worse over the last two days. After leaving it with them for the day its finally been determined that my front differential has given out and requires replacement. I'm really upset.

The above blown differential as noted is not the only issue I've had with the vehicle. I have suffered a complete loss of power on the vehicle while travelling at highway speeds, approximately 45 days after driving it off the lot. After the selling dealer scanned it, it was explained to me that the code showed a 'backfire', but that no further fault could be found. I was told to drive it and bring it back if anything further came up. I have had endless amounts of wind noise coming through the vehicle, the dealer has replaced the weather seals and window seals, but still with no success in remedying the issue.

I've owned, and still own a 2010 Tundra since almost new, and never had an issue with it. Only ever had to do maintenance on it, nothing more. It's why I put my faith into the brand and purchased this new one out-right from the dealer with the intention of a long-term hold. I cannot express how very sorry I am that I made this purchase. I must confess that the likelihood of me getting out of this vehicle as high possibility, based on my above experience.

    Any feedback is always appreciated.

It seems every single manufacturer, Toyota included, is in a race to the bottom. The name of the game is to cut costs on design/manufacturing and engineer the vehicle to get just outside of warranty to minimize those costs and maximize profits. The kicker is you can still do this and be "better rated" than other manufacturers - you don't have to build reliable vehicles, you just have to build vehicles that have fewer problems than other vehicles from other manufacturers. This less-than-great philosophy will still put you right at the top of CR while producing shit vehicles.

What driving conditions where you in when it blew? Stock truck or any lift installed?
If you were full crank in 4WD and felt it “hop” I’m guessing you might’ve been driving on pavement and that will most definitely cause damage from repeated turns in 4WD without any surface for the front wheel to slip on.

We also complained about wind noise but were told "could not duplicate". Also have quite a few rattles in the cabin headliner throughout, outer window seal that's popped out, speakers that rattle. etc.
Agree the quality appears to be lacking to say the least esp compared to previous Tundras.

    Truck is stock, no lift.
Have been driving on packed snow and ice since pretty much Nov 1st. It was hopping on ice. Your guess is incorrect: I don't drive on bare pavement with 4WD and don't do repeated turns in 4WD without any surface for the wheel to slip on.

I have a simple question. Is the front diff "open" "limited slip" or "locker"? I really can't see the diff exploding if either of the first 2 are what we have. I don't think we have a locker up front but I really don't know.

Open diff makes sense, is it always engaged up to the T-case or are there other actuators that disconnect the diff and or axle to minimize the drag on the system? I am thinking about my locking hubs on my long gone little truck.

I am thinking that there would be something electronic that would disengage the front drive train near the front wheels to save on fuel.

Can we get the build date of your truck to add to data on this type of failure. Thanks

Woah, just browsing the forum, and noticed this post, I guess I'm no longer the only one... Mine went at roughly 1100km, they replaced the front diff and was good after that.

Build date was June 2022... Maybe there was a bad batch of diffs during that time?

    See my post here:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/front-diif-issues.111141/#post-2868504

Traded the truck in shortly after and now expecting my '23 in the next couple weeks.

Nah, Ford diffs are good. You need a whippled 5.0 making 800 hp to piss them off. Not a stock truck with no lift.

Add a March 2022 build to the grenaded front diff list. 6700mi, driven maybe 40 in 4WD (never on dry pavement).

I have a 2023. The front differential died at 14K miles.

02/07/2024: I just got it back after having the differential replaced. The ride seems to be smoother now. Its starting to snow here so I'll get to try it out. The people at my dealers service compartment were great to deal with. I hope that's the last I have to deal with it though.

My 2022 Limited Tundra developed a clunking noise just over this past weekend and only has 22K miles on it. Dealership just called and said the metal filings and metal pieces were coming out and the front differential was toast. I used 4wd for the very first time in this truck last month during a snow storm here in Eastern PA. I had a 2018 Tacoma Limited and never had any issues with it. Hoping that I didn't make a mistake buying a new generation model. Ugh!
