Need help with a noise coming from dash. It happens between 20 miles per hour and 40 miles per hour gets louder up to 40 miles an hour goes away under 20 miles an hour and above 40 miles an hour. Sounds like it's coming from inside - under windshield center speaker area. It's not the radio it's not the heating system I've disconnected all of that even down to my gauge cluster and it still happens. Almost sounds like a buzzing/whining noise

Ok that's weird. Sounds like really bad electronics interference. Did you upgrade any electronics around the time this started? Is your windshield cowl damaged?

No. I've removed stereo completely. Definitely not wind noise. Driving with stereo out sounds to be behind it.

That sound isn't coming out from any of the speakers? I has something similar a few weeks ago. It was a bad RCA cable.

I hear you. I have a noise near my pillar and left dash speaker area, and it's not the door hinge. :notsure:

Yeah I've literally had almost the whole -Dash out and still cannot figure it out it's like there is an internal wall between the firewall and behind the stereo.

Does having the wipers on have any effect on it?
Does it do it when it's raining?

    Not saying this is your issue but;
We have some tractors at work that sound just like that when you get up to highway speeds.
It's the rubber molding around the top of the windshield.
I have to put gorilla tape all the way across the top of the windshield rubber to make it stop.
Took me 5 years to figure out what it was.

That noise would drive me insane.
    Good luck

Sounds mechanical to me. Check cabin blower, driveshaft, axles, everything else rotating?

I've checked all the above. All seems good. I've unplugged everything I could think of and still hear it. It starts at 20mph and goes away over 40mph.

I brought at once to my local Toyota dealer they told me it was the stereo. I brought it back without the stereo in it and said what is it now. They want it for a full day's labor to diagnose not happening.

When you say you've had all the speakers disconnected, did you disconnect them physically at the speaker? Or they still go to the amp and what you did is disconnected the head unit from the amp?

Does the noise change with engine RPM? Try to shift manually (or rather prevent shifting for a bit longer) and see if 20-40 MPH noise moves.

Super frustrating - I hope you get it solved. Please post an update if you figure out.

Does the noise happen when in P/N when revving the engine? Does engaging 4wd change anything?

While driving and the noise is happening, if safe, can you shift into neutral and see if still present?

Sounds like a reed vibrating. My wife’s Jeep GC did this and it turned out to be the rubber seal at the top of the cowl / base of the wipers. I ran a strip of gorilla tape across the seal and it quit. New cowl is $400. F that noise. Worth trying to tape the windshield seal and driving it again. Hers was most prominent around 55-70mph.

Only happens while in drive. Not sure about the 4x4 . I will have to try and see. But I've also jacked it up off ground while in place sitting still and still happens so definitely not wind.

Did you have the hood open when you did this? Noise generated from outside coming into cabin, or only icom9ng from n cabin?

Definitely sounds like something thin vibrating to me... have you checked all your heat shields and underbody fittings - running board mounts, skid plates, etc?

I have learned that sounds can be very deceiving. I chased a rattle that I was SURE was in my dash or mirror mount, only to find later that it was just a tape measure inside my center console... It sounded like it was in front and above me, but it turned out to be next to me and below...

    Good luck.
