Ah man now I have to check mine to be sure (recently purchased my truck from a dealer who changed the oil). I will never have my oil changed at one of those places. I also forbid my wife from doing so after she did once.

Truck is still parked in my driveway and I have not driven it. Luckily I have a winter beater that I usually drive this time of year anyway. The filter wrench arrived last night and I plan to drive the truck a few feet to flat ground this weekend and remove the filter housing to see exactly what is missing before ordering anything. Advice from this site and watching a bunch of youtube videos has given me the confidence that I'm capable enough and probably the best person to take and look and to change the oil going forward...if only because I'm not going to rush through the job to get the next car in. I've even heard from some of you that the dealerships have made similar mistakes.

Do you have a new filter on hand? If not I would go buy a Toyota filter from the dealer or Walmart-they stock oem filters last time I was there.

If the truck would have "function fine without it", Toyota would have saved weight and $ by removing it or not designing it that way to begin with.

I would just trust the Toyota dealer to do the O&F; if not I would do it myself.

Someone mentioned it already, but it does sound like they meant the cheap little plastic nozzle that drains the housing. Then again, it was Valvoline, so who knows….

I am looking forward to OPs pics and confirmation, this has been the most intriguing forum story this week

The fact that the manager said spigot, and that it was not included with the oil filter really points to this. Very confusing indeed.

I was really hoping that the folks who suggested that they were only talking about the cheap plastic drain nozzle were correct. Alas, that wasn't the case. What I found was that not only was the stand pipe portion missing, but the housing appeared to be one of the cheap Chinese knock offs mentioned in the video someone shared earlier in the thread. This means that it could have been like this for some time. I'm guessing the previous owner who put on the really nice skid plate and CAT protection system with the access door also could have "upgraded" to this aluminum oil filter housing...maybe not even knowing to swap over the stand pipe onto the new one. I have ordered the new OEM parts and the truck will have to sit until next week when they come in. Any other advice would be appreciated...maybe some about oil analysis providers?

Looks like a Dorman that I'm using one myself :)

As for engine oil analysis, I've been using Blackstone.

So in this case the POS oil change place did you a huge favor and I 99% sure the "center piece" has been missing for a long time.

    Mmmmmm. Well...............

Get the correct parts. Put it together. Make sure your engine oil level is correct. And then run it. These engines are tough as you've already seen. If it was gonna grenade I'm saying it would have by now. Run it and drive down the road with the thoughts of big breasted wimminz running through your head!!!!

I like the idea of cartridge filters, but they sure do cause some shitstorms. Glad the Valvoline serve department said something.

What is the benefit of the cartridge filters? Less waste?

The spin-on filters have the backflow prevention valve and bypass valve, set at a very specific pressure by the engine manufacturer, built into the oil filter. With the filter industry continually finding ways to make products cheaper to increase profit margins, like every other manufacturer out there, they have been known to bypass at the wrong pressure or not bypassing at all on cold start. That results in catastrophic damage to the engine and can lead to engine damage or failure.

The cartridge type oil filters that we now use have the backflow prevention valve and the bypass valve built in to the engine by the engine manufacturer so the manufacturer controls that important component of engine lubrication.

Toyota took the cheap oil filter manufacturers out of the reliability loop because Toyota's reputation was being damaged.

Frankly, I don't mind the cartridge filters at all.

I like seeing the filter media (easily) after an oil change to look for metal particles.

Other than that, I see no benefit as long as you don’t buy cheap filters.

Mine was lost by a shop. And it totally crushed the filter. I drove it for a few day until the oil starvation started. I didn't know it needed one. It has caused all sorts of engine codes to pop up. Luckily I don't think it damaged the engine.
