Wife wants me to hire a landscaping co to put in sprinklers in the back yard. I'm probably a dumbass for wanting to to it my self, but here we go. Anyone hauled 20' lengths of PVC in a way that didn't totally wreck anything on their truck? Paint/headliner/etc? I have a camper shell. First thought is to throw a ladder or a couple 16' 2x4 on the bike rack and strap it to those?

I figure someone on this site will have a better idea or at least a more entertaining one.

FYI, I want to do it to protect a 150+yr old oak tree. So, digging a lot of the trenches by hand to protect this tree's roots as much as I can. May try to use my pressure washer to do some of it too. I keep telling myself it'll be worth it...

Yeah run them through the back window and put a towel on the dash. Build ya a little thing that mounts in the bed outta a 2x4 to prop them up. That gets you at least 12 foot well supported. Let the rest bounce. Easy Peasy cheesy.

Don't forget to put something red (flag/towel) at the end that sticks out.

I have never seen 20' pvc pipe in a size suitable for irrigation. Are you sure you are not thinking of 10' pipe?

Regardless, I'd just cut the pipe in half and use couplers, or use a continuous coil of black poly. Here in the northeast we don't do irrigation projects in January, but if we did, we'd use black poly pipe. ;) It is cheaper, more durable, and easier to work with.

Irrigation pipes are sold in coils/rolls (for new installation) or pre-cut in short pieces (for repairs).

Otherwise here I carry a bunch of 16 ft long baseboards in DC and 6.5 ft bed. 20 ft is a bit of stretch for such configuration, I think.

Just make it work. It’ll be fine. What could they write you a ticket for? Being to much of a red blooded bad motha shut yo mouth?!

A trailer is the easiest way to add bed space. Doesn't matter if I am in a truck with a 5 foot bed or an 8 foot, 20 feet is going on a trailer for me.

Just because you can somehow fit 20' in the truck and sticking out the back, doesn't mean you should.

As above, cut it in half and couple them back together.

So you have a rack on top of your cap? Then yes strapping a ladder up there to further strap the pvc to so it doesn't flop around, provided you don't have too much, is a solid solution. Your truck is 20ft long bumper to bumper. Anyplace you are worried about your load touching the body, you can pad with a fun noodle.

Sadly, not surprised they just keep driving and try to get away with damaging other people's stuff. Zero personal responsibility, and I'm sure they'll claim that they are the victim because the wood they just bought was damaged. I hate people.

He'd just use the "gotta poop" excuse then. I say he deserves an ass whoopin', license suspension, and to have to personally pay for all damages, plus a penalty to those with damaged property for being of low social value and running.

Some things are worth paying for..

As well as paying someone competent for the job of the OP..:D

As I get older, 'I can do that' is starting to wean away...
Just pay someone, tell them exactly what you need, keep and eye on them, and be done with it..
It is getting to be my time (and effort) is more precious than my money..

Anything over 12ft is problematic without a rack imo.

Red flag or not, if you exceed your states code for overhang you are liable should someone hurt themselves. Not worth the hassle.

How deep you burying that system to worry about tree roots? I have had irrigation from Illinois to Texas and installed in Oklahoma and it is all about 6 inches deep. From my experiences putting in and repairing….rent the trencher. No way you will hurt the tree. It has had 150 years to build a root system.

I have a front receiver, two convertible bed extenders that convert to upright load supports, and a headache rack. Trailer only when weight becomes a factor.

As previously mentioned Polyethylene pipe is much more pliable and easier to route around tree roots
