Not clickbait. So I’m seriously considering trading my 21’ Lunar Rock PRO for a 23’ GMC AT4. I’ve been a new every 2-3 years guy for a while. I chased my current unicorn and it’s done nothing other than make me happy in every reliable tundra way. But now it’s time to potentially move on. I’ve looked at countless tundras and combed through the forum just as you all do for information on the 23’ tundra model. It seems like it’s negative City. Avoidable problems since Toyota had forever to work in this new model year. Plus dealer markup is a joke. No other dealer is doing it and gmc is knocking down the sticker. I drove a couple new Tundras and to be honest, meh. I drove the AT4 and fell in love. Opinions welcome. Pics below for reference.

You do you but I'm not buying any brand truck that is a new design so Toyota is out. An I'm not a GM fan for many reasons that I cannot discuss here unless I want a vacation, but it's a nice truck.

Also I think if you are a 2-3 year new guy then Toyota would never be an option.

Meh, don’t feel much like persuading. The best persuader is a long term ownership of a reliable truck vs an unreliable one. If you won’t keep it long enough to find out, get what excites you to drive everyday.

That AT4 with the baby Duramax is sweet. My buddy has the Chevy counterpart. He’s not easy on trucks, drives 60/40 hwy/city and gets 24.4 avg. the new interior is sweet too.

I almost bought a duramax but decided against it because of eventual injector fouling, the need for deb, the cost of diesel, cramped engine design, the transmission design/software that is shared with Ford, and the comparable towing capability of the 3rd gen Tundra.

I had a 6.2 Tahoe reserved after having one as a rental. Was brand new and sweet.

then I got a rental with 39k miles on it, it reminded me why I wouldn’t buy a GM ever again

If you buy every 2-3 years, it does not really matter what you buy. Get what you like. I bet in 3 years the tundra would be worth more on trade in.

I traded our 2020 Silverado LTZ for my 18 tundra. Less options. Less issues. Nothing wrong with the 2020. Had a 2014 that was problem free until a 168k miles and it was modded and beat on. Knowing what I know now, I could have fixed the issue long before it became one and I’d probably still be driving it. My family is a Chevy family and we routinely take ours over a 150k miles with no issues outside of maintenance. I’d say you can’t go wrong with the AT4. Personally, I prefer modding and tuning so anything beyond about 2018 is out for me.

A coworker traded in his tricked out Taco for an AT4. Had the AT4 for 6 months. Was in the shop for a month then another fix for 2 weeks. Regreted trading in his Taco. He's now driving a Bronco Sport based upon the Escort platform. Lost his equity trading. He'll never learn.....

Completely agree on this disaster of a new Tundra. Toyota should be embarrassed. If you're just a 2-3 year guy, then absolutely try the Ram. Really an amazing truck except for its insanely short lifespan.

Not the 22...this new roll out is nowhere near like in 07. The early run 22's.....maybe a pass.

Agree with posts above. Every 2-3 years won't really hurt you and it appears that your personal finances may not be an issue, per se. You will lose the equity battle as Toyotas usually outperform the competition. I have been in the market for a new truck and have owned 15+ Toyotas over the years. I currently drive a RAM 3500 to tow a 15K 5th wheel. The RV is for sale and I will be going back to a 1/2 ton. Probably going with a Tundra, but also looking at a Taco. I have owned 3 GMC/Chevy trucks, all with Duramax engines, and have liked them, however in my personal experience, reliability and resale of the Big 3 manufactures do not stand up to Toyota.

    I am split on the Gen 3 vs. a 20 or 21 Gen 2.

If you’re buying something new every two years won’t really matter on reliability. Friend of mine got a 2021 Silverado though and it’s been in and out of the shop alot even though covered by the warranty, still annoying. Most of the Gen3 Tundra issues likely would be no different (annoying but covered under warranty) than any other brand. Whereas the 2021 you have would be a keeper for most on the forum.

I mean, it's up to you. It's not like *every* new GMC/Chevy/etc. is crap; similarly, it's not like *every* Tundra is problem-free.

With that said, statistically, probability is much higher you'll have issues with the GMC, and whereas the issues with Toyotas have comparatively been smaller, they've been a bit more expensive/involved with the new GMCs/Chevys. That's not even getting into the resale aspect of them.

Since you’re a 2-3 year guy definitely play the field!

It’s your money and it’s awesome that you can get a new vehicle every couple of years.

Unlike you I’m a 5-7 + year guy and the 2022 Tundra for me is my 4th since 2000. Sure the Tundra isn’t perfect but what truck is? I do know however Toyota seems to try to make it right at least for the last 4 Tundras I’ve owned.

Bares repeating - you know what YOU want - your money - your decision.

So you don’t feel the move up to a ‘23 Tundra is worthwhile- many (myself included) who are in a similar situation agree - nothing to make the move from a 21 Pro to a 23 worthwhile - even if they have solved the quality issues in gen 3 (time will tell).

But at the same time - as truck buyers go - 2-3 year upgraders are the minority. Your still taking the biggest depreciation hit and given that trucks have a much longer refresh schedule - your not always getting much “newer or better”. Just a smaller odometer reading and a bigger loan balance.

What is it about the AT4 that attracts you ? That might help give some opinions? What about the Tundra don’t you like (there are some obvious shortcomings on a gen 2.5 for certain owners - but tell us what you don’t like…it’s easy to generalize and say “not techy enough” - but that’s not everyone’s biggest complaint).

Discount vs markup - that in itself is a poor reason to pick one over another ever. So right now Tesla is DISCOUNTING - 6 months ago they were marking up the exact same models…nothing changed except BUYER DEMAND. That should tell you what the future may hold to resale - after all - of no one wants them now, how likely is that to change in 2-3 years ?!?

Again - I personally have owned many hood to great GM products. What made them hood to great though was their lack of problems - primarily brought about by lack of tech and electronics. The base models I’ve owned have been good to me - the mistakes I’ve made were buying stuff that had way too many features - some that I found I never used - others were just too problematic.

Short of a 360 camera - there is nothing out there for my Pro I feel is missing that is available on a GM (or Ram/Ford). Given the price difference between a new AT4 and what I paid for a 21 Pro (sticker) - I really don’t see the advantage - even with a “discount”.

Once your identified exactly what you feel you are missing and what you feel the AT4 gives you - then perhaps someone could reasonably give you an opinion that would help you. But as it is - not enough info. Myself - I’d just dump 10k into mods on my 21 and be happy having saved at least as much in the upgrade cost. Sure - I’ll lose most of that 10k in mods come resale in a year or 2 - but I’d still be ahead of the game waiting a year to see what ‘24 holds for Toyota and GM - something tells me ‘24-25 is gonna be a game changer for a lot of brands with manufactures flush with cash from pandemic sales and demand a need to create a product that needs to be differentiated from the zillion or so 3/4year old “used” cars that will be hitting dealer lots in late ‘24.

Simple. Keep the ‘21 LR Pro (it was a limited edition run and will be worth holding on to (for many reasons))

Many have thought the grass was greener and later said they made a mistake selling the LR Pro (ask the good Doctor above who wants to buy it from you)

You have a proven weapon sitting in your driveway/garage don’t make the mistake and take an unproven weapon into battle!!

2014 Silverado. Dumped it after a year. In the shop 3 times. Was my daily driver. Not a GM fan. I had to replace the power steering pressure sensor on my 07 Tundra at 12 years old. Took me 30 minutes and only 1 beer break. Sensor cost around $20. That was the only issue I ever had with it.

Since money is no issue and you change vehicles often I say do what makes you happy. I am still excited to see my Tundra in the driveway and only wish I had apple car play but besides that I can’t see myself in another truck. (As nice as all the vehicles are these days)

If my 2020 tacoma wasn't too small, i would have kept it for a few more years. In the hopes that quality and the crazy prices of trucks would level out. I traded it for my 23 limited as I have feeling a new model tacoma will be released later this year and didn't want to gamble on if it was gonna retain or lose a higher percentage of its value due to a new model.
