Hello all. Me and the wife are on the hunt for a washing machine. I was hoping some of the family here would have some recommendations on what has lasted for them. We had a GE American made lasted 5 years 1 Month out of factory warrenty and the gear box went out. 14 months later gear box out again and now the magnetic agitator is out also. 500 dollars to fix which not worth doing it over half the cost of a new. I here just asking what people are having good luck with in the washing mach compartment.

I've got 16+ years on my Bosch nexxt500 series and though it is showing it's age it continues to charge on. I haven't had to service anything, just keep it clean and never overload it.
My backup/overflow set is a Whirlpool duet and I've had no problem with them either, but not nearly the abuse I've put the Bosch through.

Not sure what model buts it's old. I bought it over a decade ago from a local laundromat that was closing. I also have a modern frigidaire one that's super basic in another home that's really good and it was cheap with a 5 year home depot warranty.

We have Maytags - control board went out on dryer at 18 months - $400 part.

Technically a 12 month warranty - but they did step up and waive part cost - all I had to pay was service tech fee to local guy ($80) after complaining.

Whirlpool/Maytag are US BUILT - as are many others - but take that for what it is. These are large appliances and shipping and steel cost make importing pricey and not effective. The majority of the components are Chinese build and shipped here for assembly.

LG was good - but they were also dumping product at a practical loss seeking to gain market share for years. That stopped with the pandemic and a few lawsuits - so the days of cheap high quality stuff have passed.

I’ve owned a number of Bosch appliances - well built and reliable - but not cheap. Repairs were never an issue - but I’ve been told when you do need them - parts are very high priced.

Personally - I’ll stick to whatever the local big box has on special/open box that’s above the “entry level / builders grade” stuff you’d find in someone’s rental unit. Brand loyalty be damned on appliances - when they break - it’s almost as cheap to just buy new.

I've had some GE washer and electric dryer machines that still work, well after 6 months my washer tub snapped off and was replaced free99, the machine still has the skid marks, but after 14 years, they sit in my garage as I "upgraded" to LG washer and gas dryer and they've held up pretty well. No issues, and its been just over a year...

LG front load washer and dryer since 2007 replaced bearings, rollers, seals, pump, basically wear items now and again. Will keep them as long as cheap parts are available.

6 years going strong with a Maytag top load. I’m not a fan of the front load washers… they all get the mildew funky smell from my experience.

I have a Kenmore 500 series top load I bought 10 years ago. Works great. I also have a GE electric dryer I bought used from a rent-a-center in Newport, NH in 2006. The plastic knobs have yellowed a bit but otherwise it is still going strong.

We used to buy cheap used ones every time the existing one would die. It would then last about a year, then it was time for another one.

I eventually had enough of that game and bought a top loader LG. It was far more than $500. Paid for the extended warranty.

Fast forward 2 years and a power surge from a nearby lightning strike took it out. (Extended warranty covers surges.)

LG wouldn't do anything to fix it. They eventually sent me a check 90% of the value of it, and the extended warranty covered the rest. Took almost a week for them to get to that point from the time I opened a service request. Was a very long week with 3 kids!

Bought a newer model of the same LG with that money. It's still working, but starting to act weird, as in won't turn on unless you unplug it for a while and then plug it back in. Then it's as good as new.

These machines suffer from the same nonsense new tundras have: all sorts of government required garbage.

By default, they don't fill with enough water. You have to user "water plus" every time.

We got a matching LG dryer. Same deal. Default is "energy savings" mode which mean the clothes don't dry. You have to put the dry mode on high to get dry clothes. Yet they have Wifi! why on earth someone would want wifi on their washer and dryer I have no idea. But I do expect the clothes to dry?!?

I intend calling in a service request next time the washer refuses to turn on. I'm anticipating them not being interested in sending someone out, like last time, and I eventually end up with another new LG.

All that said, I'll probably get another one when it's time.

We have hotpoint washer and dryer. They were budget friendly when we moved in 8 years ago. But get run 2-4 times a week and have been fantastic. I would absolutely buy them again.

I think it's probably a crap-shoot. I have a Kenmore branded front-load washer and electric dryer (both Frigidaire) that we've had for over 24 years. I replaced the shock absorbers on the washer tub last year, but that's all I've had to do to it. But is the build quality the same today as 24+ years ago? Like I said ..... a crap-shoot.

Our LGs run well, except one day…

So, we decided to go modern and bought an LG set to replace our aging Maytag set. New front loading washer, lots of (mostly useless) settings, and so on.

One day… roughly “warranty expiration plus two weeks,” if memory serves… my wife and I are talking and happened to be in the laundry room while the washer was running…

we could hear it filling… and filling… we commented about it but we weren’t sure what was happening… it just didn’t seem right.

Then boom… the front door of the washer blew open and so much water came out that it moved a small piece of furniture… and filled the laundry room, hall, bath and a small parts of a bedroom and our kitchen with water.

Fortunately, we were standing there when it happened and could start cleaning and drying immediately.

My guess is that the fill motor (solenoid?) didn’t cut off correctly.

I didn’t bother trying to repair but just bought a new TOP LOADER!

    Nope, they are spot on.

I have the TC50 series, actual transmissions, no lid lock, weighs in at 195lbs empty.
Have the matching dryer as well.

The models without the transmission but have direct drive had some issues when first released but that was several years ago and they are running strong now.

Expensive but the set I have I got before the price increase, local dealer had them in stock and ready to go. So I jumped. These will outlast me.

    What you talkin about Willis?

    image.jpg

By far the best warranty in the business.

I will tell you this set is a workhorse. We have had the dryer for 4 years and the washer for 2.

I will say this, never use economy mode.

Kinda off subject, but I have surge protectors on nearly everything in the house. Forgot about the dishwasher the first go round and sure enough my neighbor watched the lightning strike my home and the dishwasher lost the battle. If it's expensive, protect it!

I purchased the cheapest Amana washer and dryer set that Lowes had about 4 years ago. I run a minimum of one load per day and I have not had one issue with either machine. Buddy at Lowe’s told me that most appliances use the same parts that just have a different name brand. I was told to stay away from any Samsung product.

I miss my sears kenmores. They would last 15 years with a little maintenance. Most over seas models only last about 5 years.

Now I like Whirlpool, The last Washers/Dryers made the USA.

We bought LG direct drive front loader set about 10 yrs ago when our old Kenmore took a dump. Washes well and saves water but we have to leave the door open for rest of day every time otherwise get lots of mold around door seal. I periodically have to take out the soap and fabric softener dispenser because it gets nasty with mold. Would not recommend another front loader

We were given the chance to swap our old top loaders for slightly used Samsung front loaders back in 2016.

Had to replace a control board on the washer and the tensioner pulley for the dryer belt.

Couldn’t find anyone to work on Samsungs I’m College Station TX, so I did a little interneting, purchased parts on eBay, and did it all myself.

I’ll report back if I just jinxed everything.
