Looking to spend about $2k on a new washer and drier, likely front loading and stackable to save space. Any thoughts on options that are trouble free and well built?

I don't know all the options Speed Queen offers regarding stackable etc. however you can get a set within your budget. When washing machine quality was a long thread a couple of years ago we decided to get a Speed Queen washer based on the comments made here. We bought just the basic top loader model and it has been fantastic! I have four kids that play sports so we do a lot of laundry. I had far to many electronic control issues with the Samsung we had prior and without an agitator you cant load them much at all. the SQ solved those two issues.

I'd go with Speed Queen, as others have said. If that's not an option I'd personally go with LG.

+1 on LG. Ours have been good since 2013. Only "issue" we've ever had was the supply line being a little loud, but that'll depend on your line pressure more than anything. We just moved to a newer set that my FIL didn't want from his new house and the line noise seems to be better.

Bought new LG's in 2007 and replaced, bearings, seals, rollers, pump, etc. Basically wear items a few times They are still both running like champs to this day. The direct drive washer is an extremely heavy bastard though, be careful with it if you get one. Probably keep mine as long as parts are available.

We've had LG front loaders for a little over 10 years now. Not really any issues with them; one time the washer controls didn't work, but that was resolved by unplugging and plugging back in.

We had LGs from 2008, they were fine. My Dad died & Mom sold her house, gave us 2021 Samsung top of the line whiz bang giant pieces of crap. YMMV

Hated our LG's we bought 2 years ago. Significantly more stank associated with clothes than our Samsung's 4 years ago. And we're pretty religious about leaving the doors open and cleaning regularly with vinegar. We could not leave clothes overnight from 8pm to 6am. We'll likely look at GE the next time around with their venting options in the front doors. Speed queen is awesome, if we have to room to do top loaders we'll go that route.

Pretty happy with our Maytag front loaders..
    Minimal issues...

Do not buy Bosch, many an issue when we had those.
I got so good at replacing the washer door boot I could in less than 30 minutes.
It would rip almost every time we put a thick blanket or bedspread in it..

We would have bought a SpeedQueen but my 5' wife didn't like reaching into it..

Sorry it's not exactly what you're looking for, but we'll be buying Speed Queen whenever (if-ever?) our 1992 Kenmore's bite the bullet.

Stacked a set of Maytags at the hunting camp to save space. Actually like them better than the set we have at home.

We just picked up an LG washtower a few months back. So far so good, great capacity too for a tower

We bought Electrolux a few (maybe 4) years ago. They’ve been great so far, but a friend at work had terrible luck with his identical washer. I think he threw it off a cliff. Ours is still perfect…

Well at this point, our dryer stopped drying a week ago but I found that one of the thermal fuses needed to be replaced so I went with that for now...

I have a set of LGs. My only complaint is mold buildup around door seal and soap dispenser tray.might be due to living in the humid south

LG has for whatever reason become the Toyota of washer and dryers, well priced and last forever.

Did that get you back in the laundry business? It’s crazy how many appliances get tossed out because a simple part dies. Unfortunately, the cost of diagnosis and repair in a shop often exceeds the value of the machine.

I’m fortunate to have an appliance repair friend that likes a little side-work. Our Electrolux drier threw a trouble code about a month past warranty. At close to $1,500 for the machine, I was less than thrilled. I had my buddy run some diagnostic checks on it, and all that happened was a wiring harness plug wasn’t fully engaged past the retention clips. It worked itself loose. We plugged it back in. Took an hour. Cost me $50 and about two beers.

I’ve had him fix a few fridges, other laundry gear, and a dishwasher over the years. All for low costs, and all because of a silly problem that was easy. Another example, my brother’s garage fridge quit staying cold. It’s a nice fridge that he bought new specifically for this use. The problem? The fan shaft in the fridge had built up a little crud on it, creating enough drag to not work efficiently. The fix? Pull fan cover, remove fan and motor, clean, lube, replace. Zero dollars in parts, $50 of labor. Still good three years later.

One more! Our bottom-freezer fridge in our new house (we built in 2012) was leaking water on the kitchen floor at 18 months old. Looked around and found the bottom of the freezer was a pool of ice. Water from defrost cycle was not going down the drain pipe into the pan for evaporation. It kept dumping into the freezer till it was full. The drain tube is small and builds up ice easily. Once that starts, it keeps going till it can’t take any more.

The fix? Remove defrost heat element shroud. Take 12” of bare wire, like electric fence type, and slip it down the defrost drain tube. Bend the top end of the wire in half and crimp it on the defrost heat rod. Put the shroud back on.
Every time it goes into defrost cycle, it warms that wire. Prevents ice buildup.

    Parts? 62 cents.
Labor? $100 because he came to my house 20 miles out of town…

Fridge is now almost 11 years old and still works as new.

Find an appliance guy and make friends!!!

Yup, its fixed. I agree about how most will just buy another rather than try to fix it.
