Have any of you noticed moisture on the driver's side under the OEM rubber floormats?

I took my '22 Limited in recently as I noticed that the mat was damp on the underside and there was visible moisture beading on the carpet in a 6x6 patch under it as well. It's been getting a slight musty smell in the cab as well. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as spilled water, wet shoes etc as well - it's really been tough to figure out.

Took it in to a dealer and they couldn't figure out what might be causing it (they blew out the AC Drain tube on the other side as the only thing they could think of), so I took it home, dried it out extensively and set a battery-powered fan inside the cab, directly blowing on the carpet for 8-10 hours a day and it always seems to slowly come back after a couple of days.

Have any of you noticed anything like this? I'm trying to figure out the best course of action or if it's just going to be a matter of making the rounds to every dealer in the area in hopes that someone might know something about it so I can get it worked out before the musty smell really settles in and who-knows-what starts growing under there. Thanks!

Rain or car washes recently? Any other environmental factors like super hot and humid with a lot of AC use?

Nope! Been dry lately and mostly normal AC use, less so now that temps have dropped a bit as well.

No other leaks or signs of water intrusion anywhere else in the cabin either. I do have the pano moonroof but they checked that out (that was their first thought) and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

    Curious. The usual culprits are:

    1. Clogged roof drains, you can find these yourself at the corers of the moon roof, blow some air through them, or pour water in the track and watch where it goes.
    2. (somewhat rare) Clogged AC condenser core drain. The little thing that drips water out when the AC is running and its humid

Sounds like your dealer checked the boxes for those though. Water under a floor mat can stay wet for a long time, keep that in mind. Get it dried out, and keep an eye on it after your truck gets wet, or AC use. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

Thanks! I pulled off a few pieces of the interior door trim which allowed me to get to the underlayment/floor better and am drying those thoroughly as well which I wasn't doing before. Appreciate your recommendations and comments. Loving the truck so far otherwise!

have you figured this out yet ? I have the same problem with my TRD PRO it’s only under driver mat and it smells like dirty socks at this point. Brand new truck and it gets wet in that spot with no rain or wet feet.

I was thinking clogged AC drains. I always see water under my truck towards the front after I park in the garage, but it sounds like your dealer already check those. I hope you find out what is causing that moisture. Please post and let everyone know just in case we experience it later.

I have not been under the newer trucks but is there a rubber grommet under the mat leading to the outside of the vehicle?

also, I might check the bottom of the door panel and make sure that water is draining properly OUT of, instead of into, the car.

Are you sure it’s plain water?

So this was quite the journey for me over the past few months, but once I got a service advisor to take it seriously (they could not reproduce/find the issue on prior trips), they found a bad seam seal/void in the floorpan in the left front floorboard that was letting in water from the outside that was getting kicked up into the wheel well after driving on wet roads and then into the cab. I've never taken it through deep water or anything other than your typical wet/rainy roads so far.

Diagnosing the issue properly required removing all of the drivers side carpet/underlayment and spraying water from the underside up into the cab.

They found a good amount of mold/mildew so they ripped out and replaced the carpet, underlayment, LASD (sound deadening material) and had Servpro out for remediation and sent the results of the remediation out to a lab for testing to ensure that the issue was taken care of. All new carpet/soft materials on the driver side as well as new cabin air filter.

This took about three weeks over the holiday period unfortunately - YMMV based on how staffed the service department at your dealer is. Anecdotal, but this trip they said they've seen this on a couple of 2022 Tundras now so who knows how widespread it actually is.

They took it seriously once they realized what was actually causing the issue and I'm pretty pleased with the thoroughness of the remediation - the hardest part was getting them to take a serious look at it and just just attributing it to the normal sunroof leak, clogged drain etc. and writing the issue off.

Please PM if you want additional details, and I'd advise any of you with 2022s to do a quick check under your front (at least driver's) side floormat and feel if you find any moisture/dampness under there or a musty smell in your cab - that might be it.

Moist is usually a good thing.

    What a headache.
    Fortunately, they found the issue.

Thank you for the update I will inform my dealer if I can not fix it myself. I have had bad luck with my dealer getting a new scratch everytime I have been there so I try to avoid them.

Exactly, once they take it seriously. The only issue I have had with my 2.5 gen Tundra was moisture coming in from the HVAC system. I could get a ton of water in the cab/carpet, but when at the dealer they would dry out the carpet and couldn't duplicate the water inside, was dumping outside like it should.

I kept going through in my head what differences there were between my normal driving/parking and the dealership. Finally on a Friday evening as they were getting ready to close I started talking with the Service Manager (a Tundra owner) and he could tell I was frustrated and really trying to figure it out. Together we moved the passenger side carpeting and the plastic piece that covers the access to the HVAC unit. Nothing..damn..it was dripping out where it was supposed to. Then it dawned on me...

I told the service manager my theory and he obliged me by having a 4-Runner on display in front of the dealership (on a slight "rock" incline display) moved, and we drove the Tundra up on the inclined display. Got out and we both went over to the passenger side and looked. Sure as shit every 20 seconds or so a drip of water would go down the side of the transmission tunnel hump, very consistently.

The difference between the dealership testing and real world - I park on an incline every day.

Since we are talking about water or moisture in the cabin and to have all the potential causes of moisture under one thread ... add the 3rd brake light gasket leak to list. I assume gen 2.5 and older models? but who knows.

    @Sundog
Did you have a clogged drain or bad sealant or broken pipe?

The HVAC unit outer casing is plastic, and had an actual hole in it.

Had a partial occluded drain (gasket) before, but that had been previously fixed.

Thank You for update on this. I just yesterday was cleaning my Tundra and removed the floormats and noted the carpet was significantly wet on the drivers side, near the accelerator pedal. Would be no way to know this without removing the rubber mat. I'm going to print out this thread and take the dealer for a repair.

Thank you both for posting. I’m having the same issue and looking for as much information as possible to bring with me to my dealership. jMo, are you able to share any details, which dealership, work orders, parts used? Anything would be appreciated.

Recently while vacuuming out my truck I noticed some moisture under the drivers side mat and thought eh, some snow got in there. I saw this post the other day and was worried so I pulled up my carpet and the underside was not wet, neither was the insulating pad or the metal of the truck. The area that’s wet has the vent directly underneath the carpet. Could this be a condensation problem?

I just got my truck back from my dealership, who has been great, but the result was unsatisfactory. Even showing them jmo715’s post, apparently Toyota corporate is saying the floor mat is the problem and the moisture is coming from water or snow on my feet. Total BS as far as I’m concerned. The dealership are doing their best and are going to continue to fight this but Toyota corporate has them handcuffed. Between that and excessive wind noise from the drivers door, even after seals were replaced, it’s leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

What if you put a layer of plastic under the mat with paper towels or similar between the carpet and plastic to demonstrate it is coming from the bottom up?

reddhills, thank you. Brilliant idea. I’ll do exactly that. I’m just frustrated that I’m having to do my own problem solving on a brand new 60k truck. I appreciate your input though.

Your problem is definitely not going to fix itself I fixed mine on my own so I did not have to screw with the dealer. Every single time I have to go to the dealer for a recall or anything the truck comes back in worse shape . Last time they scratched my display where the gauges would be with my keys the time before that they put three scratches in my passenger door .

I hear you, so far my dealership has been great, they’re just restricted by corporate. I’m hoping jmo715 gets back to me with his info, work order etc. what did you do to solve the problem? Did you determine 100% it was from the broken/cracked sealant?

Yes I resealed it with seam sealer and undercoat on the bottom side . I have been through several rain storms since dry as a bone.

No the stupid part is when you pull the carpet back you can see where it is coming from .
