This has been going on for a rather long time. There really aren't any parts in the way of gaskets, it's just a sealant and it's applied by a machine. It's not applying enough and it's leaking. The Tundra 5.7L is built stateside, the Land Cruiser 5.7L is built in Japan and they don't have the issue. I personally have not read of any Sequoias having this issue, nor personally read of anyone having the repair fail and have to have it redone, but others may have.

As far as dealers not listening to the customers suggestion as to where it's actually leaking, I've had to deal with this with BMW motorbikes. It seems to me that if the dealership wants to get reimbursed for the work, they must follow the procedures outlined by the mother ship. This could be where the valve cover gasket replacement and oil dye trouble shooting comes from.

Yes. It seems the dealership that I was working with went through the valve cover gasket and oil dye routine as part of a process. Also probably because they get paid more for it too. I did not like the experience and people should not have to put up with it. However, this is where I bought the tundra and I have an extended warranty on it as well, so I want all of this documented by the dealer. I think after my experience and having had a conversation with the general manager, my future experience here will be better. And hopefully, this helps any other tundra owners that may wander into this dealership with a similar problem. However, judging by the fact that they didn't seem all that familiar with this type of leak, maybe it is not that common?

So I got my Tundra back today! Very happy so far. They said they took it for test drive everyday After the repair, to make sure there was no leak.
(as I work out of town, and left the truck with them for two weeks).
Way better sealant job than what the machine did at factory :). They used a black sealant, witch I think they should of used in the first place at the factory imo. @gdiep what colour sealant did they used on yours?
Now only time will tell, but looks really good seal and I hope it will last for miles to come.

Well, I'm still smelling a burning oil scent coming from the passenger side wheel well (not just me, but my wife and kids confirm this). This is where the leak was. I have now called Toyota directly and am opening a case with them. Either I have a lemon of an engine or the dealership is a lemon, or both. I cannot continue driving this around when it is leaking oil.

Doubt it's a lemon of an engine.
Have you tried taking it to a different dealer?

Toyota is asking me to continue to work with this dealer. They are trying to get one of their technicians out to look at the tundra along with the dealership techs. They are trying to get this scheduled. This time will be the 6th time that I have brought the tundra in for the oil leak issue. So with all due respect Sean, if they cannot fix it this time, then it is a lemon and they are going to have to buy it back.

Sorry to hear that buddy. Maybe @Sean266 is right try another dealer. I had to drive two hrs to my dealer cause the dealer in my city is shit, I wouldn't take my truck there if it was the last dealer, even for an oil change I drive the two hrs to that dealer. The dealer I take my truck told me exactly what the mechanic did. They knew exactly what the problem was the first time I took it and it looks like he did a good job. I hope you get this fixed, witch it should of been the first time. Keep us updated

Thanks and I appreciate the advice, including Sean's. However, I am working with Toyota to resolve this issue. The truck will either be 100% fixed or it will be bought back by Toyota. Those are the only acceptable outcomes for me. From Toyota's standpoint, they asked me to continue to work through this current dealership. I am complying with their request so that they will comply with mine.

Just wondering.. How many miles did you have once this issue occurred? Also, if it was under warranty.

I need to start putting some miles on my truck. If it's gonna happen to me, it better be under warranty.

For the record, this started around the 21k mile mark. However, I bought the truck from Toyota Dealer just 2 months prior with 20k miles. It could have been leaking since, but I never noticed it. This is my wife's DD and does not get driven much. It is also still within the 3 year mark. So I have 3/yr 36k mile warranty, plus the powertrain warranty, plus I had purchased an extended platinum warranty.

I have taken this vehicle to the same dealer 5 times now for the oil leak. They have replaced the valve cover gasket and the cam tower gasket on the passengers side. It still smells like burning oil when we start it in the morning. After driving it around during the day, the smell is less noticeable. To me, it must be leaking when everything cools down and metal/gaskets shrink. Then seals back up when everything heats up and expands. They found a lot of oil on the heat shield the last time they had it, and cleaned the heat shield, so it doesn't appear to be residue from past leaks. It appears to still be leaking somehow.

This sounds terrible man. I just picked up my 2016 Tundra about a month ago. It's got about 13K miles on it now. I'm nervous after reading this thread. Where exactly under the car can I check to see if it's leaking? Man, I sold my 08 F150 with 35k miles because it was giving me some issues. I decided on this Tundra instead of a new F150 because they are more reliable than Ford. I hope that I wasn't wrong.

i just purchased my first tundra the other day(not from a toyota dealer), a used cm 5.7 w/39k and think i may have the same issue, lots of oil under the truck on control arm and other parts. it looks like i found oil in the usual place but could be mistaken. Should i have a toyota tech check this out before i go back and argue with the dealer? i have 5 days to return the vehicle. Any help would be great!!!

Most likely cam tower leaking. I would have it check ASAP and then take them the estimate of repair.

Just wanted to give an update since my fix.

It's been 10,000km (6200miles) since my truck been fixed from cam tower leak. The truck has been running better than ever. No more burning smell at all.
I went camping twice already with my truck and pulled my trailer like there was nothing behind me lol. I just came back from my recent camping trip witch was in BC, Canada and I had a quad, a dual sport motorcycle, and my generator on the bed on my truck and of course pulling my trailer, Tundra did flawless with no issues in does BC mountains. I know this is not a lot of km since my fix but though I give you guys an update and hope you guys get this problem fixed. It's worth it, it's a great engine.
So knock on wood my Tundra will be running strong for years to come! It's still running like the day I drove it off the lot.

It already sounds like you are but make sure you're in contact with Toyota customer service every time you have an issue so it's documented through them. I had a similar issue with a 16 Tacoma we bought brand new last year, started leaking at 800 miles from the timing cover. Wasn't fixed the first time and was in the shop a total of 2 weeks, got a free Toyota Platinum warranty out of it.

Wanted to make sure I closed the loop on this.

I went to the dealership multiple times and went through a lot of nonsense, but they finally confirmed a tower cam seal leak and fixed it. It has been fixed for 4 months and has not leaked. I also spoke to Toyota Customer service and they gave me a platinum warranty for my troubles.

Thanks for everyone's help. Hope this thread helps others that might run into this issue.
