Just made it up too. Sounded perfect…think I’ll use it too since it hasn’t been deemed derogatory yet

Check the build link in my signature.
My second year living here, some asshat with no traction anything (tires, chains, whatever) spun out in front of us on Hwy 26 coming the opposite direction close to dark. Fucked up the front end of my wife’s 4R, and completely destroyed the passenger side of his car. Thankfully I was only going about 35, and the main impact was the rear passenger door, or it would have been a serious injury accident for his passenger.
It blocked traffic both ways (we were between Gvt Camp and Rhododendron below silent rock), and it took three hours to get a tow truck up there because of the traffic jam (before the days of cell reception and it was only one lane each way). I stood in the fucking cold with my buddy those three hours trying to direct traffic one car at a time each way while the other driver sat in his car whining about the damage to his car. It was a good thing my wife was with us, or I’d probably have ended up in jail for bashing his head in with his own hub cap.

The signs were clearly up requiring traction devices.
The conditions were snowing hard and lots of snow and ice on the road.
DOT isn’t putting that stuff up as a suggestion.
If you don’t have the gear for the conditions, stay home.

    Preach brother.

And slow the fuck down. I know I drive too fast in general but you won’t see me going gonzo on snowy highways.

I think it also has to do with the shortage of snow plow driver in WA (and OR) this year. Greater chance of getting stuck than in previous years.

Update time. So, Wheel Kraft stated that in their process this does happen and they cannot control the chipping, it is one of the downsides of turning the face of the wheel. Les Schwab for their credit is stepping up and offering me new wheels.

I like the stock wheels as I don't want a flashy truck. I want something that looks stock-ish and doesn't draw attention. I also like being confident in drivability and handling.

Also, I do like the Method 701. My concern is the offset, as if I am understanding this correctly going from a -60 to a +25, it is going to suck the tire into the suspension over 3" according to an online calculator. That gets me into likely modifying the mud flaps and fender wells and that is not the road I want to go right now. Am I understanding this correctly.

Aside from TRD Pro wheels which I would jump at, any other recommendations or thoughts here? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Also there are same TRD OR wheels that are all black (Sport package?). Those are a maybe. Thoughts?

I could be wrong but those numbers don't sound right to me for a stock TRD OR wheel.
Can you get cash out of them and then go find your own?
I saw OR takeoffs on Craigslist recently for $500.

That might even put a little cash on your pockets for your trouble.

Agreed. Stock is +60 I believe and going to +25 would push it out away from the suspension and slightly stuck past the fenders. +60 to +25 would push it out 1.37” if I did my math right this early. You should be able to run +25 at stock tire size or slightly larger and not have to do any trimming.

Yes, thank you both. That makes much more sense. I guess I have too much else on my mind this morning.

Might just go the 701s. Last question, the 701 are bead grip (not lock). Does that have any positive or negative aspects for me? I suspect 1-2 over the life of the tires I might air down in the sand. Not enough though to need the bead grip. I just like the look of this wheel better than the 316 or 703 that are standard.

Sounds like it’s not a necessity but I don’t think it will hurt you either. I’d do the same thing and buy for the look. I do like the 701’s and would look good on your truck.

I've got a set of Method wheels on our Sequoia with the bead grip. I would put it between standard bead and the locking type. I don't see any negatives.

I might be interested in your chipped stock wheels for a winter set, if you plan on selling them.

What are the nuances of the chain laws up here? Most of my life has been spent in the Midwest and Northeast where we have limited snowfall and salt the fuck out of the roads so don't have worry about it. Do you always carry chains and use them when required? Not req'd on 4WD cars? Throw 3 peak rated tires on and forget about it?

I'm trying to my research so I'm not one of those idiots, just wondering what you guys do to stay safe/legal.

Not sure about OR, but in WA when traveling mountain passes you generally don’t have to chain up when “chains are required” if you have four/all-wheel drive. However, legally you have to carry chains. Technically if things are bad enough the state could mandate chains on all vehicles but have never seen it.

I keep a set of chains in the truck during the winter months. Never had to use them, but like to be ready.

I always have them in the truck. However, I have yet to put them on during normal highway use... With that being said, I do slow down and if the roads get too icy, I stay off of them when I can, as I don't trust other drivers. I'd imagine if you're running a 3 peak or winter rated tire on a 4WD or AWD in and not driving like a jackass the Staters/DOT would probably just warn in worse case scenario. However, here is the statute in OR; you'll note is basically just defining authority and signage, etc. for conditions... Most of the 815 ORS deals w/operating an unsafe vehicle (equipment, windshields, etc..). So, if you were to violate the provisions for an established "conditions requirement", you could be cited for 'Operating an Unsafe MV'. Hope this helps....

815.045 Rules for use of traction tires, retractable studded tires and chains; signs. (1) The Oregon Transportation Commission shall adopt rules necessary to carry out ORS 815.140 and 815.142. The rules adopted by the commission:

    (a) Shall establish the various types of conditions under which vehicle traction tires or chains must be used or carried.

    (b) Shall define types of vehicle traction tires or chains that may be used or carried under various road conditions. The commission rules under this paragraph shall comply with the following:

    (A) Traction tire shall be defined to include any tire that meets traction standards established by the Department of Transportation.

    (B) Retractable studded tires or tires with studs that are permitted under ORS 815.165 shall be allowed as traction tires under the rules.

    (C) The department may require that traction tires without studs bear identifying marks, defined by the department, that indicate that the tire was manufactured specifically for adverse weather conditions.

    (D) Chains shall be defined to include link chains, cable chains or any other device that attaches to the wheel, vehicle or outside of the tire and that augments the traction of a vehicle.

    (E) Retractable studded tires shall be defined to include tires with embedded studs that project beyond the tread surface only when a vehicle operator extends the studs to augment the traction of the vehicle.

    (c) Shall establish signs to be posted under conditions that require vehicle traction tires or chains to be used or carried.

    (d) May establish types or classes of vehicles that are exempt from requirements to use or carry vehicle traction tires or chains under certain conditions if the commission determines that the operation of the class or type of vehicle would be safe under those conditions.

    (2) A road authority shall:

    (a) Determine when conditions on a segment of highway require a person to use or carry vehicle traction tires or chains as defined by the commission;

    (b) Determine which segments of a highway shall be posted as described under this section to require a person to use or carry vehicle traction tires or chains; and

    (c) Provide for the placement and removal of signs requiring a person to use or carry vehicle traction tires or chains. [1983 c.338 §441; 1985 c.16 §231; 1993 c.741 §86; 1997 c.493 §1; 2007 c.406 §1; 2021 c.630 §97]

Update: Method 701s going on this weekend. Appreciate LS stepping up and doing what is right here. Hope Saturday ends this saga.

Glad they are doing what is right. Hard to find these days and the methods are going to look sweet but I am a little biased. :D

Portland metro area and Hood River areas seem to get a "chains required even for 4wd" curfew type events every once in a while. Whereas I have never seen this happen in WA, but WA DOT tends to just shut down mountain passes/specific highways instead (Hwy 2 being the classic one). Areas like Bend, OR seem to acquire so many jack knifed semis that it essentially closes down the highways anyways (similar to WA highways too), but seems like rural areas never have official road restrictions. Some of the best "sliding on snow" videos seem to come from I90 and similar roads around here due to the vast change from metro to mountain snow differences.

Funny all this talk about chains and then this past week there have been daily massive wrecks on I-90 that close the highway. Jinx!

Normally my wife is crazy excited to visit Leavenworth for their holiday scene. Since they’ve gotten a ton of snow recently I asked her if she’d like to go this weekend. She said “prob not” because of all the road closures this past week.
