Think that's just one of the ways to describe it. Better power band (higher rpm) means more power, right?

    No.

My truck does not feel any faster. It does not feel like I have more power. It just shifts different. Holds 6th better on the hwy. The RPMs at freeway speed are a little higher. But acceleration is EXACTLY the same.

Now. When I added headers I got a +50hp +90tq bump in power. THAT increase I can feel. Made The Truck feel much lighter, like I dropped 500 lbs of gear

So being in a different power band, or higher rpm, doesn't mean more power? I guess all the dyno charts I've seen are wrong then.

    Update 5.29 gears

    Mileage towing 1k-1.5klbs in mtns
    - 13.2 hwy 65-70mph/ city rolling hills 45-55mph

    Mileage city
    -13-13.3mpg

    mileage hwy
    14.9-15.2mpg

at first I question whether the 5.29 were the right option as my miles per gallon fell, empower/responsiveness increased. After the ecu relearned the New Gears and driving patterns I feel confident I made the right choice.

true ecu break in period 2/3k miles.

I have 5:29 and rear auburn pro locker and 285/75/18 about 34.9” tires . Its way faster than stock off the line. It sits about 2000 rpm at 75 mph. It tows better, cooler trans temp. But I’m mostly using it to drive up canyons and camping or towing a little trailer for work.

My understanding is we only have two available ratio upgrade for us, 4.88 and 5.29. My ideal setup for my scenario is 5.10 or 5.13 but got the next best available, 5.29.

    I am completely biased.

Get the 5.29’s and cram some 37’s up in there!
Fwiw, I tested my ol’ 33’s with the 5.29’s and holy sheet! Felt like I was gonna pop a wheelie…

    5.29 is the answer.

Running 5.29s on 35s and very happy. Keith from Dirty Deeds helped me out a ton with my decision. Don’t let that chart scare you.

Don't think you would feel the difference between the present 4.3 rears with 33" tires and 37" tires with 4.88 as there is only an increase of 232 lbs. feet increase of torque going to wheels. That's a 13.4 increase over present torque.

It would be cool to get more than 11.5 mpg with 35s, can't wait to regear.

    Too many, but not enough....
I'm getting 5.29s put on in a little less than a month. SO stoked. I'm running 33s with heavy stock steelies, full armor and trail gear, loaded cab with alot of mountain and high elevation trails. I can't wait to bump it with tow haul and nannies off.

Yes. I have also installed a pedal commander to help with how much torque has been put back. This puppy has some power!

I do off-road and haul loads on occasion, some times thousands of pounds. Still curious if 4:88 would of been better

I’m running 35x12.5s on a 2.5in lift. With plans to have a weekend warrior for overlanding type of rig. I’ve already added more weight to my truck with aftermarket bumpers, topper, and a few other random things. I’m also planning on adding roof racks and a RTT. All that being said should I go with 4.88 or 5.29 to help accommodate the extra weight?

I loved my 5.29's and I was running 33's but had a crap ton of extra weight front and rear similar to what your planning. The 5.29 are only 250 rpm diff than the 4.88's at 70mph speeds. Here is a calculator to see the different speeds/rpms/gears: https://purperformance.com/p-29669-rpm-calculator.html

    here's another calculator https://spicerparts.com/calculators/engine-rpm-calculator

I’m also on 5.29 and didn’t even consider 4.88. I run 295/70/18 right now with maybe 100-150 lbs of extra weight. Absolutely love it. Would 100% do the same thing again.

This. From a guy with 4.88’s and 37’s, go 5.29.

You’ll never ask yourself “I wonder if 4.88’s would have been better.”

I have plenty of power for my needs, but I ask myself the opposite all the time!

Thank you all for the info!

What did you notice for difference with drivability and mpg after the regear?

MPG before was 11-12 and now I’m around 12.5-13.5 from what I hand calculate. It’s tough to judge. I work from home so I only drive to the gym during the week and there’s 11 combined stop lights and signs on the way there and 10 on the way back for a 15 minute round trip. I have bad luck and get every red light.

I made a straight shot to and from NC before re-gear and got 13.1 both ways all highway - just me. After re-gear I did another straight shot to Lake George NY and I got 14.1 - with 4 others and weekends worth of stuff with some hills. So the higher mpg is there I just don’t get to see a lot of it due to where I drive. Hopefully this winter I’ll have more info as I go snowboarding after work and it’s 2.5 hour round trip 80% highway.

As for drivability I noticed it right off the bat. There’s a small overpass on the highway near my house that it always downshifted to go up. Doesn’t do that anymore at all and that part was so annoying to me. Any slight incline and it just downshifted all the time.

It feels smoother to get up and go; before it felt sluggish/stubborn like something was weighing it down/slightly holding it back. It’s not a huge night and day difference neither. It’s just noticeable like if you drove a stock and a 5.29 back to back you’d be able to tell. I can also feel the difference when I tow my boat uphills, it just has that grunt back to it. Before i was worried about some mountain climbs to get lake wallenpaupack with the boat behind me as there’s some steep grades up in the Poconos. Now it doesn’t cross my mind. My boats 20 ft 3000 lbs before all the gear and trailer. Not sure of total weight

I’d 100% do it again and stay with 5.29s but I don’t think I would prioritize it as high as I did.

also fwiw mine are nitro - not rem polished nor cyro treated. Just straight normal. Had some whine during break in but no sound at all after first flush.

5.29 is what you’re going to want to run.

Running 5.29’s per Keith’s recommendation on 34’s (315/70/17) and I don’t regret it one bit. Truck doesn’t feel overgeared at all. Cruised at 80 mph to Las Vegas, no sweat.

    Over geared is under rated.
