This holiday season, adopt don't shop! So many shelters are overflowing after the holiday season because of unwanted "pet presents" .... or "out with the old, in with the new".

This is what it looks like in one run at the shelter I adopted my dog from 10 years ago. This is a kill shelter and these dogs will most likely be euthanized after a week.

Thank you for posting this and thank you for adopting. Important problem especially this time of the year. So many great personalities living in shelters who want to go adventuring with us Tundra owners.

I believe many of the Petco-type joints have partnerships with local shelters to help place animals. Breeders with their social media accounts are the bane of animal adoptions...

Our petsmart has programs with two shelters to help find homes fro cats and dogs. They do not sell either.

Jebus, that breaks my heart, they should work with Canadian humane society, you rarely come across dogs at shelters here.

We have 4 rescue pets. Dog and three cats.
One cat just showed up in my workshop, we tracked it's origin to a shelter in a neighboring county. They transfered him to us over the phone as the family that originally adopted him wouldn't take him back.
One wasmalnurished to the extent of stunting her growth. You could feel ribs when you touche dher. She's back to healthy now. I don't think the first family meant to hurt her. They took her back to the shelter when they realized they couldn't care for her.

I know not everyone can adopt. My son would have to pay over $1200 a year to have an animal in his apartment. But you can help out your shelter. Money, a bag of dog food, cat food, or litter even a couple of bottles of bleach. Our shelter has a list of products they need. Also has a thrift store that we take stuff to. Then end up buying stuff while were there.

Good post OP! So much easier to like dogs more than humans. My rescue is a fantastic pup! IMG_20221112_085737717.jpg

I’m divided on the whole “adopt don’t shop” thing - and here’s why.

Local “government run” shelters are largely becoming a thing of the past - no tax dollars to fund them/less people buying license for their animals =no funding. Worse - what dogs they do tend to receive are not exactly “ready to be adopted” - here locally it’s mainly 80% pit bulls off the street - no one’s giving up their 6 month old puppies because they don’t want it any more.

Then you get the “rescues” - the individual who applied for tax exempt status and claims to be “helping” pets find good homes. We have one in particular who makes herself out to be a saint and has sadly convinced a few unknowing elderly people to transfer their sizeable estates to her in support of the “mission”.

Her mission is basically “flipping” pets and collecting a sizeable income as “director”. She has managed to buy a pretty nice farm off donations and does this as her “full time” hustle. Regularly she manages to “rescue” small/young and adoptable dogs from across multiple states - finds suckers to transport them to her facility - and then places them out at outragous adoption fees of $600-2k per pet / depending on the breed and how high demand might be. She justifies this with her “cost” of caring for the dogs of course.

Strangely - in 6 years I have yet to see her have one Pit bull or other harder to adopt breed. Mainly small dogs to medium size - very few big dogs and none with temperament issues. You would think someone adopting out over a few hundred dogs a year would have at least a few of the most common “shelter dogs” in their roster.

Oh of course this same person is constantly going on about breeders and how they are irresponsible. Not that puppy mills don’t exist / but there’s a big difference between a puppy mill and a responsible breeder. Many breeders do act responsibly - and are not in it for money - only as a hobby. It’s never a money making thing - just encouraging and allowing responsible ownership of their selected breed they are loyal to.

Tell me how this is “worse” than a “rescue” who routinely tells potential adopters that to get priority in the selection process they should make a contribution to the rescue?!? Worse - I know people who have literally been told there “was another bidder” after applying and be selected to adopt a pet from her. Agreed to meet on a Friday night to pick up - and then called Friday morning asking to raise the “adoption fee”.

It’s just sad how people will scam you when it comes to pets. Find a soft spot and take advantage - all while playing hero.

Sadder - there was a recent article in the paper. Someone else who played this game a while back was recently found to have abandoned multiple “household pets” in their cages and simply left the home they were about to lose to foreclosure. Over 40 animals in cages found dead - all died over 4 years ago - many of the cages had food in them but empty water bowls - animals just left to die by a heartless asshole who pretended to be a savior. There’s a special place in hell for these people.

Jokes aside we are really struggling with brimming shelters in Alberta. The Humane Society may not have many, but AARCs and other shelters have been overwhelmed with Covid puppies now that lockdowns are over.

    Rescue dogs rule!

Our was adopted at 8 months. The city got hold of her and knew she had an owner. Contact them and they said they would come. Never came. Second call. Never came. City took custody of her. She was at the shelter for 6-8 weeks and no one wanted her.

She's living the dream now! Full run of house and yard and come all all our adventures and holidays. Same as our last 2 rescues.

Black dogs get adopted even less (no joke). As they don't photograph as well and generally don't look as friendly.

Please adopt if you are looking for a dog. And don't sorry if it's not a pup, they are still full of love and life. It's not their fault they were given up or abandoned.

Pic from 30 second ago. Her regular living room spot, front window, with a valour pillow my wife purchased for her.

Fwiw, lots of puppies at the government shelters here and adoption fees are cheap. Plus the pet is chipped too. We will never solve all of the problems with greed and total jack asses in society. Plus that the animals shouldn't be penalized for anything us humans have done. The woman you speak of that seems to exploiting the dogs/situation for profit, how many has she killed? Not saying that it's right, I'm just asking if she has killed any of the dogs?

    ADOPT DON'T SHOP

Near and dear to me. We had a family friend who was a vet and took his own life owing to a variety of factors, but a big one being depression from putting down so many healthy dogs and cats. It's appalling to me that people feel the need to go out and buy a specific breed. Only exception is working dogs. Unless you're hunting, farming, or military, go rescue a pup at your local shelter.

My two boys checking in. The one on the right isn't blind, just squinty:

    Rescues are the best.

Here is my goofball, Lacy. She is an 8 year old lab mix that we got from a local rescue group (we have had her for 4 years now).

She is such a sweet dog.

Petco does many adoption events with my local rescue shelter souldog.org . ASPCA is a good donation also, they spray around a lot of money to independents that do the work with rescue, spay, neuter. I'm in continual admiration of the people that do rescues.

You can be "appalled" all you want, but I will still get the breed that is best for what I can properly care for and meshes with my life. I'm all for adopting if possible, but I'd way rather somebody held out for a breed that fits their abilities and lifestyle than take the first dog presented for adoption and have it be a bad experience for both. The working dog bit goes both ways. No one should be shamed for loving a particular breed.

    Your dogs are adorable.

Wonder if they can work something out with Ontario shelters, I know cats were an issue here during Covid, my daughter just rescued an orange tabby but there was only 2 dogs.

Here's the dog tax, Bear, he's almost 16, we adopted him when he was 5 months old from Windsor area.

I see where you're coming from but respectfully disagree, to a point. While breed influences behavior, the individual dog's personality coupled with training are going to matter more in compatibility between dog and human.

I think 95% of prospective dog owners would have their canine needs met by one of the 3.3 million dogs that enter shelters each year (of which 670k are euthanized).

People should be shamed for loving doodles, no exceptions. ;)

My sister bred one of her dogs recently, I think a lot less of her now.
I grew up listening to Bob Barkers pet advice, guess she never got the memo.
Our first dog was being re-homed when we got him, he was a nightmare but a kind soul and we try and give him the best life we can.

We've had 2 rescue dogs and 3 pure breeds. All the pure breeds were carefully selected and have been healthy, intelligent and good natured.

Our first rescue was a Burnese mix and was exceptionally smart and super protective. Our other rescue was from our vet. The mother and several puppies were killed on the road. We rescued one of the orphans.

Unfortunately she was not socialized and presented some behavioral issues. She lived a good and healthy life but we had to learn her quirks and be careful with her. She probably would have been put down under most circumstances, but she loved us and we loved her.

People should just be aware that all dogs are a lifetime commitment regardless of rescue or pure breeds.
