Looking through this thread got me curious. My door label is listed at 7165 lbs gvwr. 22 crewmax limited 2WD, weighed with a full tank, black armor bedmat and bakflip mx4, drawbar, and miscellaneous gear under the rear seat and in the console. My door sticker says max payload is 1445. Based off the name plate and my weight today, I have a calculated payload capacity of 1365 lbs. If, however, I use the individual axle ratings at 100% of their rating, my available payload goes up to 2140 lbs. By the time I load up the travel trailer(750lbs tongue weight), The wife, kids and dog(650lbs), and all the crap that rides in the bed of the truck, I will be 150-250 lbs over the 1365 number easy. My 2000 tundra had payload of around 1900 lbs back then and I know it could handle much more than that. Surely theses newer, bigger trucks can handle a couple hundred over what the door label states.

For the limited, per Canadian Owner's manual, removing Pano and JBL should not effect GVWR. But deleting those wasn't really something I wanted to wait for. Besides, do you think GVWR is actually based on a different frame, brakes, drivetrain?

You do! ;) Despite my truck saying 7365, I may just treat it as the 7780 which is max for the hybrid of the same size.

You have to take the least capability as they are all MAX ratings - you can't add axle capability to develop a new max rating. If you look above, I think GVWR is scaled by truck model, which means they really care how and where you put in the weight - if you put olympic plates over each axle, you could handle way over GVWR, but if you put in a giant slide-in camper, you're going to throw off vehicle dynamics.

I’m over by a few hundred pounds on a somewhat regular basis. Did Imogene Pass like that. Truck does not care at all. OEM leafs and RAS. No accelerated wear on brakes, either.

The pro model has no options to change the payload, so how does toyota get away with stating 1600lbs???? My payload sticker says 1355. There are no other configurations on the pro.

Because the stickers are BS. Go weigh the truck at a cat scale empty with a full tank of fuel and you’ll probably find the payload sticker is low.

Toyota is only putting one of around 15 possible payloads on any given truck. The 15 are in the owners manual. Your sticker will match one of them because they are nit accounting for specific options

I had lots of questions about tundra payload which all have been answered reading through this thread. My only question is, has anyone taken a base SR or SR5 model to the scale? And what was the actual curb weight of? Thanks.

Got it. Thank you. It would be great if someone, more tech savvy than I, would put together a list of all available trims weighed at the catscales, (empty with topped off fluids) and their respective GVWR’s. Then we can all have all the trims actual payload.
I’m thinking I will probably go with an SR5 DC, 6.5 foot bed with minimum bells so I can get the maximum payload. I’m even thinking the smaller of the 2 gas tanks. I’ll just carry a 5 gallon security gas can in the camper’s cargo carrier. I really would love 1800 lbs for how I want to load that donkey for my camping needs.
I wonder if the base SR weighs less. My camper’s GVWR is only 5400lbs, which be close to that when I’m done. So the SR should pull it fine. Any thoughts on that?

    My 2 cents:

    1. Don't get the smaller gas tank if you have the option for the big one. Lots of people on here swear by the larger tank, especially if you are towing.
    2. Stick with the SR5 or higher - doesn't the base SR only have the 348hp engine? You don't want that... Get the better engine - you are towing!
    3. 5400 GVWR camping is about a hitch weight of say 800 lbs at very most (15% of GVWR), probably closer to 700lbs on most days. I wouldn't worry about the payload game too much because that's a pretty low hitch weight. Get a truck you want with the features you want. 5400 GVWR is a very modest size trailer for the 3rd Gen Tundra.

I agree with what TRD-JP said. I think the dry weight of my trailer is about 5400 lbs and my second gen does fine with it in the Rockies.

Get the bigger tank, just dont fill it all the way if you’re worried about payload

No, the base SR really doesn't weigh any less, so forget that, the base SR5 I weighed in post #409 is virtually what a 4x4 SR weighs.

SR also has drawbacks like reduced engine power, reduced towing (only ~8,300lbs), only comes with the tiny 22gal fuel tank.

I'd recommend you look at an SR5 DC 6.5', a 4x4 model should have ~1,700lbs actual payload before adding accessories, without a spray in liner

    -SR detuned Twin-Turbo V6 per build detail sheet: 358 hp @ 5200 rpm, 406 lb.-ft. @ 2000 rpm

I have a SR5, 4x4, CM. No TRD, or other options. It’s a great truck. My test drive was to the scale. It weighs 5560 with full tank. GVWR = 7210. Payload = 1650. My Coleman TT has a GVWR of 7600 lbs. Truck tow’s like a dream! I wouldn’t go any larger, and I’m careful with how I load it, but the results have been really impressive!

Appreciate the help gents. Ok SR is out. I will definitely go SR5 with a bigger tank, low on the options so it stays a light as possible. I saw a DC in person in Lowe’s a couple days ago. Yeah the back seats are tight but it’s only 2 of us and we basically use the back for storage. I have a tongue weight scale, my tongue weight is only 600 lbs when the trailer is loaded. When I get the truck I will take it to the scales and post results.

Good choice on the larger tank. Probably my biggest complaint of this truck (which overall is my favorite truck I've ever owned) is that the stated tank size is 32 gallons. That got me stoked for towing, until I realized it shows empty at 26 gallons. I've read that's due to cooling the pump, not really sure. I just fill up before I get to E. If you do the same you will essentially be using a tow vehicle with a 26 gallon tank. Not nearly as impressive for towing distance. Overall I still love this truck!

I'll say the same thing I've said on every page of the 38 gallon thread: if you want to put more fuel in the tank when you fill up, drive farther between fill ups.

It won't hurt anything? That's an honest question. I can't figure out why Toyota would show the truck being completely empty when it still has 6 gallons. I would be happy to run another 50-60 miles per tank when towing.

I have a 2023 sr 2wd small cab. Payload sticker is still lower than the 1940 lbs the manual says it should be. I think they put the low number on every truck. Cause in theory a 2wd non crew cab SR model should be the highest.

I have the SR double cab and my payload is only 1500 according to the sticker. Not sure why when it should be closer to the 1940 payload

My sticker says the same 1500lbs, the brochure says it is the 1940lbs. Mine had no options and is two wheel drive so it should be the max amount. My guess Toyota just slaps the same door sticker on most of them.

@Markysharky @SR4x4DC if you take your bone stock truck to the CAT scale with a full tank of fuel (edit: with you out!) and subtract your scale ticket axle weights from the GVWR printed on your door jamb, that will give you your true payload rating. Lots of ‘22 and ‘23 owners are finding out that they have more payload than what is written on the door jamb.

We’re all very curious since you have the trucks that should have the highest payload (especially the 2wd). Let us know if you go conduct this experiment for your Tundras.com brethren.

@Markysharky & @SR4x4DC I feel your pain. Toyota may advertise 1940 as the max payload but neither lists such a model in their owners manual or permits the buyer to order one with such a payload.
    The max is 1580 and that’s for a 2WD DC 8’ bed.
I can only assume that they are legally permitted to advertise a maximum payload that not a single buyer is able to achieve.
That said, I second @Terndrerrr advice. If GVWR, axle and tire ratings are your concern then you will be able to get yourself up to a few 100 lbs extra.

@Markysharky @SR4x4DC Yes please scale your truck, full tank, minus your body weight or step out of truck.

Easy 1st step is posting a pic of the door jam sticker with your GVWR on it.

    I weighed 2 Tundras in post #409 and 449

Toyota plays games with the GVWR, moving it up and down so the payload allowable per GVWR sticker hangs around 1600lbs actual

My sticker says 1350 but I weighed the truck and it was 5800 (SR5, 4x4, crew max, 6.5 ft bed) with me in it so I have about 1500 lbs of cargo weight to play with before I hit the GVWR. This is with 1400 lbs of wood pellets in the back and I'm obviously not in the truck which you can subtract 200 lbs for that. So it's 300 lbs below the GVWR and it's sitting pretty darn low in the rear end. They are definitely soft in the rear end even without going over GVWR.

Every single Toyota truck is soft in the rear, that is their design methodology.

I believe that and as long as a person has realistic expectations of their truck's capacity they'll be good. It's folks who in reality should have a 3/4 ton that expects any 1/2 ton to do what they need it to do that have issues.
