I haven't moved my truck since I returned from my trip to Denver on Friday to have the dealer check it for an oil leak, "in the area of the valve cover". I took a peek then and didn't see any oil where I'd seen it before, where the dealer steam cleaned. I figured that the two hour drive would result in something visible for certain. After taking a look today, it seems that it's apt to leak while parked.

Here is the driver's side, you can see a little bit of a glint of oil when you hold the flashlight at the right angle. You can also see the oil wick away from the leak, just not so much in this picture.
    IMG_20150608_123122447.jpg

This is the passenger side. Below the valve cover where the RTV is squeezed out, it's possible to see that the RTV is wet with oil and has wicked to an even greater extent.
    IMG_20150608_123031357.jpg

This is also on the passenger side but at the rear of the engine. No question.

Your right. It's all in the pics. Especially the last one. Pretty obvious. At least oil is not blowing out for lack of better word.

    Get an avatar, slacker.
I had to reschedule to Tuesday. It seems that "Sure, I'll work Thursday." somehow translates to, "What do you mean you can't work Friday?"

Anything I should be wary of? I've never had a dealership work on my vehicle before. Are they going to draw penises on the insides of the valve covers for the next tech to laugh at?

Whups, sorry Jace. Came off kinda abrasive. We've not meet. Your name was dropped though in connection with who to ask for suggestions on competent warranty techs to tackle a possible (likely) cam tower leak on my ride.

I made it to Denver, it took two hours to make a determination that it was the cam tower leak. That place is mad busy, even on a Tuesday. The waiting area made me think of a hospital waiting area where no one looks at each other much, or hopes that they don't get caught doing it. At least there's less chance of getting sick from someone's oozing child, theoretically.

Because I had my trailer with me, I mentioned that I needed a rental with a receiver. They shuttled me to the rental place and I am handed the keys to this:
    IMG_20150616_130756592.jpg

I go back to the dealership to collect the trailer and find that the light hook ups are wrong, the truck has only the seven pin plug, and the receiver is too big. I thought it was three inches, but was told it was two and a half, I needed a two inch. I go back to the rental and they send me back out with this and a sleeve for the receiver:
    IMG_20150616_134340192.jpg

The exhaust brake is mildly entertaining dropping the passes. Novel.

Both are WAY overkill, but I needed my trailer.

The dealer says it's going to be a few days. The warranty will only pay for three days of rental. I'm going to call my insurance company tomorrow to see if they have any ideas to help out.

Naw, I picked it over the Fords that they had offered. It's an interesting ride. I've always prefered the sound of the inline 6. It's like driving a locomotive, you pretty much idle around everywhere feathering the throttle. It climbed the passes without downshifting at posted speed and cruise control, I don't even think it came out of lockup. Snarled a little, that was it. With the descents, it averaged 20mpg, same as my Tundra on trips to Denver. Empty the ride is like a lawn tractor over a railroad crossing though, I thought my truck was rough when empty.

Stevinson called a little while ago and said that my truck is looking to possibly be done mid next week. I suggested that they crank the A/C in the shop to keep the tech comfortable, although they probably don't have any, I have no idea.

My insurance can't do anything to help with the rental because there's no claim. I've searched around and I couldn't find anything with AAA, I don't think that they involve themselves with commercial vehicles. The rental is registered as a commercial vehicle, like I mentioned, WAY overkill, but it has kicking A/C. The service advisor said that he was going to try to get me a little more help on the rental coverage, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

I suppose that I should sit my sorry bum down and begin working on a teary, sobbing letter to Toyota Corporate in a effort to have them bless me with an extended warranty.

So I wrote this admittedly brilliant email requesting that my powertrain warranty be extended, I probably worked on it for over an hour. Within fifteen minutes I got a reply and was on the phone with someone.

    "LOL, no."

Well, the way it went down was that I got a reply to my email asking me to call them. I called and pretty much reiterated my plea, and they came back with some two minute, probably scripted (sounded kind of that way) response. "Um, yea, no...Toyota doesn't do that."

When I got a notification for your reply, it was just the quote, there wasn't any text in it. I see that it was edited by a moderator. I have no idea if this post is legitimately yours or not Jace....

Anyhow, I picked up my ride today. And it made the climb quite nicely. Kudos to the tech, that must've been a royal pain, wish I could've at least shook his hand. I'm sure that they prefer to keep people out of their hair so they can do their jobs and keep their focus, not to mention keeping those with two left feet out of the work area. With an engine torn down as far as they are for the cam tower leak, and all the busy stuff for the VVTi, there are a lot of things that could potentially get overlooked.

I edited it. Text was entered in the middle of the quote instead of at the end. It's easy to do and I have seen a lot of it. Needs to start with [ quote ] and end with [/ quote ] without the spaces to work correctly. No biggie. I wouldn't ever put words in anyone's mouth and neither would any other mod here.

    @csuviper
Huh, that would explain my not seeing anything. Thanks.

    @LOTSOFTOYS
To answer, I had the Cam Tower Leak repaired, that's what this thread is about.
I requested that my drivetrain warranty be extended in the case that this possibly manifests itself again. I don't know if it's an assembly issue or there's something wonky with the components themselves. I was simply just trying to avoid an extremely costly repair for something that I think we can all agree, given Toyota's reputation and high standards, should not be happening. I had to give it a shot.:D

Do you have any insight into why this does not seem to be happening on the Land Cruiser nor the Lexus with the 3UR-FE, at least that I've been able to find? The only thing I can think of would be that maybe the Tundra engines are assembled in the U.S. and the LC and Lexus engines are assembled in Japan, but I don't know if that's accurate either.

But your insinuating that the repair made is not gonna be permanent? If it's done correctly, there should never be any more problems.

I'm not trying to insult the techs handiwork. Shouldn't the assembly junction have been deemed "permanent" from the factory? There shouldn't have been a problem for the tech to correct. I hope to hell that it's permanent and never has to be thought about again, but nothing is perfect. It took approximately 50K miles for the factory inadequacy to present itself. By having requested (and been denied) a drivetrain warranty extension, I was simply looking ahead at the next 50K miles, I think that is a reasonable request to make of Toyota for a failure that should never have occurred during the expected lifetime of the assembly and was not a jab at the techs workmanship or pride. If you know who it was and he feels slighted, please, on my behalf share with him that that is not the case. If it were within my reasonable ability to do so in person, I would. I suspect that his skin is a little thicker than to be insulted by one such as me though.

Meanwhile, we still haven't seen an official declaration from Toyota why this is happening (probably never will). Was it the robot? Was it the RTV? Were the tolerances greater than originally anticipated? What combination of circumstances resulted in the failure? Why do there not seem to be any documented occurrences of this happening on an LC or a Lexus with the 3UR-FE? What assembly procedure or techniqueisdifferent between them? My opinion it was probably a fipg mistake. Maybe the gap between the head and cam tower was slihtly more than expected, but in all reality it should be 0.000
Maybe it was a machine failure? No clue man... i know they still cant figure it out though. Just resealed a timing cover today on 15 hihlander with 700 miles on it. Puking oil. Imo, is these chinsy aluminum engines that are sealed together top bottom and sides with so many pieces, its bound to leak. But its cheaper to make it that way vs. Gaskets and larger pieces. Also cheaper to repair or replace .... they started having problems with leaks in 05 with the new taco. Clearly they havent figured it out yet.

This is starting to sound like gm. Had to double check and make sure I wasn't on a gm forum.

Im willing to bet its from a different supplier why its not happening. If my memory is correct the lexus is still on japan soil for most of them. I dont know if georgetown ky is up and running lexus or not.. It would be very costly to make engines here(usa) ship over to japan for install and bring them back over here..

Lotsoftoys might be able to prove my theory in this, but its a good guess at this point why lexus dont see the failures.

Sounds like a visual thing to see if anyone has been inside for a problem. Its like a tamper proof seal why you can't get grey I bet. Makes sense.
