Hey everyone, new to the forum here. Hate to be that guy with the "Is this truck worth it" post but it gonna be that guy, forgive me in advance. I've been in the market for a truck for awhile, just browsing, trying to build credit, etc. Well, the transmission went out in my daily so this has escalated my search. Back story over.

I found a 2012 Tundra 4x4 with a 5.7 around 221k miles. He truck looks to be in decent shape, obviously with the miles you expect some wear and tear. The miles do and don't scare me at the same time. My dad had a Tacoma that he bought new and drove it 200,000 miles in the next 3 years and it looks brand new and drove brand new. My 91 mr2 had 220k miles on it and it burned oil but other than that it was good, my 93 mr2 turbo has 150k on it now. So mileage doesn't phase me much, especially with it being a 2012 it's more than likely highway mileage. But it is 221 unknown miles. Other than that the truck looks fantastic.

My credit situation isn't the greatest right now so I can't afford a 2012 with 55,000 miles and a 750 a month payment (that's what the last place told me and tried to make me feel like that was an amazing deal) Hence this one. I'll post a link to the truck in question.

This one seems to be possibly everything I want in a truck. 6 spd. V8, 4x4 and white.

I should make note, I am very mechanically inclined, have a good set of tools and have access to good OEM toyota pricing.

What do y'all think, given I can't afford an outrageous new truck payment, kinda of in a bind, and this is everything I seem to want in a truck. Is this a right buy?

    221,000 $16,500

Knowing that there is a Tundra out there with 1 million miles, I think you're good LOL.

I would be weary of the miles, but sounds like you are re able to jump in a fix things and have access to parts. I'm not mechanically inclined so I would do it. As longs as you inspect it and look she like a safe bet for you, then go ahead.

I'm sure other folks will jump in and let you know what to look for. Good luck.

Decent looking Tundra. A lot of miles? Maybe not. Ideally you should have a good mechanic, preferably a Toyota mech, take a look at it.

My 2012 with 98,000 got $21,000 but it was a 4.6. It wasnt in perfect shape but pretty good. I know a 5.7 would get more but I'm having a hard time with $16,500 with that many miles. I would look for a better deal.

I found a 2013 with only 98,000 for $18,500 when I was looking for mine.

    You can do better, IMO

My brother recently bought a 2013 4.6l SR5 4x4 with 65k for about the same price.

Where are you located? $16,500 seems high to me for the mileage. Very high, tbh.

I don't mean to be a downer, you should do what is right in your situation, but I know for a fact that there are better Tundras for the same money in my area... I'm in the SLC, UT area.

My view on used cars... Shits gonna break, you're mechanically minded, parts are relatively cheap, if you like it, buy it. Tons of support on here to help you fix it if/when you need it.

I'd rather have a truck with 250k miles that were regularly maintained easy miles than a 50k truck that's beaten to shit... Either way, you're guessing on what you're getting.

Not sure what your long-term plans are... My only concern would be resale... You're gonna have a hard time moving that on when you're done with it... Pay down the loan as fast as you can so you don't end up upside-down... Sorry for the unsolicited financial advice...

in colorado, you'd pay the same for one with 60-80k less miles. so i think that's high

i just paid 26k for one with with less than 22k miles

How much was the one with 55k miles?
750 a month sounds high for a used tundra.

    In my opinion, pass.

Not for the miles, more so your credit situation. Taking out a 16k loan on crappy credit is not in your best long term financial goals:

    - higher mileage vehicle. What is the probability of this vehicle needing costly maintenance/repair? Research some of the repair costs of common failed parts.
    - higher interest rate loans, equals more out of pocket expenses per month.
    - can you afford the fuel these trucks drink like frat boys?
    - have you researched the 7.9 qts of oil and filter costs?

What I am hinting at is go get a Toyota Corrola and drive the shit out of it for a while, clean up your credit, save up, and come back later and say "look what nice Tundra I just purchased" to all of us.

Make sure it is white, it is the fastest color!!

This makes a ton of sense... Apart from the corolla part... If you need a truck...

But a beater truck to repair your credit... Else your payment is just going to make the bank even richer while doing little to pay down the principle on the loan.

Generally, the older the vehicle, the cheaper they are to keep on the road, less electronic bullshit to fix.

Where are you located or did I miss that earlier?

True on the truck part. One of my co-workers purchased a 2wd Toyota pickup, 1984 with 260k miles on it for 1200.00. It uses a little oil, but that was over 5 years ago. I think the truck has over 300k on it now...and he has excellent credit and makes over six figures a year.

    Something to consider.

It sounds like the same old cliche': Bad credit, high interest loan, high mileage vehicle, vehicle breaks down, can't afford to fix, vehicle goes into default because of fixing, credit gets even worse....

Sounds like an old drunk cowboy strumming on a guitar...with a GD PBR.

Id pass. Milage is way too high for my needs.

GET PRE-APPROVED, Set your MAX BUDGET. I am too poor to go cheap and do things twice so buy a nicer truck. Pays off in the long run to have a new lesser mileage vehicle.

Start looking at the oldest truck out there with the lowest possible mileage that you can find.

Toyota Certified is defiantly the way to go as well if you find one that you like in budget. I found my 2013 just 5 months ago with only 20k miles, is Certified, and I only paid 32 for it.

They had started at 37. I plaid hard to get and walked away. They called me 20 mins later and went down to 35. I said that Id think about it.

Let it go for a few more days. They called again. Were now at 34. I let it go again another day and went back by there. Told them 32 and we had a deal. They took it.
