Awesome Minimalistic phone mount (MagSafe)

I don’t much care for charging my phone in my truck. I charge my phone when I sleep and a full charge lasts me until bedtime the next day with some to spare. Im also a minimalist, I like things that give me the coolest/best functionality while being compact and self contained. For this reason this build is not for wireless charging (don’t want or need wires coming hanging around my driver space.

The pro clip is set up as normal, the magnetic puck is where the modifying comes in. It’s very simple though, the puck is a magnetic ring covered by a thin layer of rubber or tpu. There’s a hole in the center of it under the rubber and as you can see I cut it just enough to get the screw in there and just drilled it into the face of the pro clip. And that’s it. Assuming you have an iPhone with MagSafe this works fantastically. Whatever orientation you want it will stay that way and it doesn’t wiggle at all. What I love about it is that mounting and unmounting is a breeze. The magnets are strong enough to hold the phone in place and easy enough to just grab the phone and go. It’s small minimal and located exactly where I need it.

Edited: This works with the MagSafe iPhone with out a case and with MagSafe cases.

*I do have one of my cases with an OhSnap grip attached to it and it is also magnetic so it still works perfectly.

I have found the Scosche Magic Mount or similar magnet/plate to be much stronger than the magsafe system.

yes I had one of those on there before and I’d didn’t work as well as this one. I think it’s because this one is actually circular and the exact same size as the magnets in the phone and cases

 

I also went with the ProClip, which I really like. However, I chose the https://www.proclipusa.com/products/klock-werks-ioauto-magnetic-mount which I also really like.

The best things about it are the ability to adjust the angle of the phone up to 45 degrees and that it uses a very thin metal disk that stick on the back of you phone or its case. Eventhough the disc is so thin, it still nestles into a slight relief on the mount letting you know it is on properly and making a very secure connection. And it is so thin that it is hardly noticeable in your hand or pocket.

Really nothing bad to say except that if you put your phone(case) with a disc on it, onto a wireless charger, it can get very hot.

How about this, $13 for two, thin wafer on phone back and small footprint dash component. I use 2 on each vehicle, I run 1 old phone just for Torque or when wife rides.

Yes I’ve seen those. The mounts you linked are the typical ones that just stick to the dash surface with sticky tape. I’m sure they’re reliable. However I’m not sure if you’ve seen or used this pro clip. I like it better because this pro clip is specifically made for this model tundra. It’s made to be virtually immovable because it uses two cooperating methods of attachment. There’s a “base fin” that wedges in between the crack of the dashboard and trim just below it, and it’s placement is also reinforced with a strip of sticky tape. Exclusive to the tundra.

I don’t like the idea of relying 100% on just 3M tape stuck to a flat surface. As I mentioned I’m sure it’s reliable, but it would eventually fall off due to heat or just age. My pro clip is there to stay. I’m actually afraid to if I ever need to uninstall it for fear of cracking or messing up the dashboard lol

 

Now this I like, maybe if I ever feel the itch to, I’ll get this one and try it out. The one I have is perfect the way it is though. The viewing angle is exactly where I need it

 

I like this but not for the price

 

I see the oh snap... Now I'm angry. They've made the product so terrible this round, it isn't even usable like it used to be. Do not "upgrade" to the version 3.

 

Dude…. I’m literally holding the 3 right now. And yes. I can’t even begin to express my disappointment. I was a pre orderer. Idk what the hell happened but holy crap they dropped the ball on this 3 pro. Literally just bent plastic. The 2.0 is way better witch I also have. I might just buy a few more 2.0s in different colors and call it a day.

 

As I understand it, the tape doesn't do much in terms of holding it, but more for protecting the dash from being rubbed. The real mechanism holding it so firmly, is the piece that goes inbetween and behind the dash and the corresponding outer piece, which both work as a clamp when you screw them together. It is incredibly stable, and as easily it was to install, I don't worry about cracking anything taking it out. Not really a concern anyway since it will be there as long as I own the truck, which will likely be as long as I owned my last Tundra, 22 years.

I have never liked relying soley on adhesive tape for any serious or long term mounting solution. In terms of cost, well we all make decisions on what we want to do with our trucks. I have always been a proponent of form over function , so this cost makes sense to me but doing something like de-chroming or adding TRD badged accessories, does not. As always YMMV.
