10,000 mi between oil changes?

I've got 4,500 mi on my 2017 Tundra. My Dealer said not to change that oil till 10,000mi. They said it is synthetic and it will go for a long time (10,000mi)?

 

I would change it.

 

i don't change mine at 10K or 5K....I wait until about 7-8K just to be safe. (synthetic)

 

I have a 2013 5.7L with the Flex Fuel, I only put 87 octane in there. I do it about 5K increments, but wonder if that is a bit of overkill, and it is synthetic too. Kind of a hit to wallet on these oil changes, especially once the guys talk me into something else every time I am there. Since I only use 87 can I go longer? Does the Flex Fuel even matter?

 

If its a flex fuel, we recc oil changes every 5k. All 3rd gens are full synthetic. The 5.7 is our big boy and takes a shit load of oil. Personally or even from my tech experience I would not go with a 10k interval. oil and rotate every 5k.

 

I'd do the first oil change at 5000. Then every 10k thereafter.

 

I plan on doing 7500, but will likely be somewhere between that and 5k.

 

Why not do what the manua/Toyota recommends?
I have a 2009 Honda accord since new, I only change the oil when the maintenance minder tells me which is usually around 9,000 miles. I am almost to 200,000 miles on it without any problems.

I guess if you want to waste money the oil companies/dealerships will gladly take it. I totally understand wanting to change it sooner because of the way things used to be with the whole 3,000 mile crap but we just need to let that kind of thinking go.

 

My father always told me oil is cheap and engines are expensive. So I change mine every 5k.

 

If you bought your truck and gonna keep it change oil every 5000 cheap insurance. If it's a lease then who cares don't change it. I'm a tech I bought my truck. Every 5k for me

 

Toyota Care sent me a flyer in the mail thanking me for my Tundra purchase and sent me a maintenance schedule to change oil at 5,000 miles and rotate tires also.

 

Would do 1st change at about 2k on new engine. 4500 pay for it and have them pay for the 10k. You pay the 15k them 20k and so on. Did some research on full synthetic and the oil will last for 15k but do you really want the particles in the oil cycling around your engine for that many miles. Probably not.

I change my oil every 5-7.5k Miles. I use Mobile1 Full Synthetic High mileage oil (5w-20). I am pretty sure that the manual says oil changes every 10k with synthetic oil is recommended as long as they vehicle is not used Heavily.

 

Here is a manual for the 2nd generation Tundra. If you search for 'oil' or 'fluid capacity', you will get some hits back with some good info.

 

I did change my oil in my 2008 with Mobile 1 also but I switched to high mileage formula also. My Toyota mechanic says Mobile 1 is the best oil for the Tundra.

 

2 things to remember when you think this way. First vehicle manufacturer's have to post yearly cost of maintenance they keep streching out maintenance schedule's to lower this number. Secons vehicle manufacturer's need to sell cars to stay alive, they don't want your car to last forever.

Even at 5k that oil is filthy!!

 

I think some of it has to do with your driving habits too. Lots of freeway and no towing=10K max. City and freeway with or without towing=5K max. I personally do the 5K thing because of my city driving/towing. I used the free dealer at 10K and did the in-between at 5K myself. Oil change = inexpensive....lack of oil change = motor life reduction.

I change mine around 7500 miles. 5000 is too often for me so I try to stretch it out a little more.

 

They sent me some BS in my email about being due for service even though I only have 2000 miles on it. Between motorcycle commuting and being laid up for knee work I haven't driven much. I figured I'd schedule it since it's free. Service told me it's due at 10k. I'm not letting it go that long. Prolly just change it myself, taking it in is bigger pain in the ass than diy anyways.

 

I changed my 95 Landcruiser every 5k and had 348,000 miles on it with no problem. (Bought it with 22k) Traded it in at the dealership that serviced it and still got $5k for it. CHANGE YOUR OIL lease or own. Why f@ck the next guy looking for a nice <50kmi truck.

 

I just had my first "service" tire rotation. I have been thinking about this since I bought my truck. I'v run full synthetic changed at 5k in all my old cars but my diesel. Reading through this thread has solidified the decision to keep up this schedule on my Tundra regardless of what Toyota says. I never felt right about the 10k changes. I guess now I have a weekend project.

 

I change my oil every 5000 miles I would recommend you do also.

 

Fresh amsoil, and tire rotation every 5,000 miles for me. cheap insurance compared to engine repair.
