So i recently just had my last free oil change from toyota care and was wanting to have the dealership go ahead and install the metal oil filter canister for when i take over doing the oil changes going forward, but when everything was done they said no such item exists for my truck after they finished the oil change, which seemed odd. They informed me that they could not find a part number that would fit my truck. My truck is 2021 CM SR5.

My questions are, why is available on previous years? is there really something different about the 2020-2021 years? If what they said is not correct does anyone have the OEM Part number that I can look at getting when its time for me to change it later on?

    Thanks for everyone time!

Toyota doesn't list the aluminum filter cap for the V8s (Tundra, Sequoia, LandCruiser, etc) for any year. That's why the dealer could not find the part. This is due to the baffle tube that is in the aluminum cap being shorter for the V6s. What members on here do is swap the longer tube from the plastic cap into the aluminum one. Its a pretty easy job, the video below explains it.

15620-31060 is the part number. It fits the 07-21.

Thank you both!! i will be doing this on the next install. It still crazy to me that its the same housing(sort of) and that they don't offer it in the beginning.

No. You will move the drain plug and center tube over to it.

Is the drain plug plastic from the original housing?

My dealership was the same way. Technician was clueless how to install the driver side grab handle. I’m the first one to ask you about this?

Service manager at the dealership that did my free changes would have known. When I told him that I destroyed the plastic one after his goons over torqued mine he offered a new plastic one. I said no thanks I already replaced with a metal one. He said he did the same on his truck.

I wouldn't advise it. The aluminum cap is just too heavy. o_O

Do I also need to transfer over o rings to this housing or does it come with new ones?

The new oil filter will come with new o rings. Don’t swap over the old ones, they may cause a leak. If you weren’t already, just wait till your truck needs an oil change to do the swap.

This video might make you reconsider. The plastic one really works just fine as long as its not over tightened.

I do not believe for one second that swapping the center baffle tube makes the filter housing junk. That video sounds like typical Toyota corp propaganda "you have to buy the entire OEM unit....we can only use OEM parts..." convincing you spend $$$$

He even contradicts himself when he says "I dont care if you use aftermarket or performance filter element, just dont change the plastic housing" after earlier in the video warning against using anything but the "calibrated" quality OEM filter element.

You have to bear in mind that his content/advice is really for the majority of people that have no mechanical aptitude. Most people absolutely should not mess with something like this and he seems to know that. You can find plenty of videos of people destroying an engine and/or transmission doing something as "simple" as an oil change. He wants dissuade people from doing things that could damage their vehicle if done wrong.

With that in mind, his point has some merit, the center tube has the bypass valve at the bottom of it. There is a significant risk of messing up some important stuff if you are an idiot. However, if you know what you are doing, the risk is very low. Absolute worst case, you damage a ~$35 part that is easily replaced. A competent person will know if they performed the swap properly or if they need to order another cap.

    Probably so ^^^.

One must remember that the penalty for non-compliance with CAFE is a sliding scale penalty. So "yes" every thousandth of a MPG counts.
