    driving with tailgate down

I have a 10' Kayak and was wondering if you can damage the tailgate on potholes or my main concern is rock/sand chips! it maybe too high to get chipped but the car is black you know :D and I don't want to risk it. you never know with the air flow and aerodynamics and vacuum pockets (see below) ... stuff may fly in all directions going 60mph
I will be on paved roads but going 50-70mph.

    different subject but
for example in my Tacoma right in front of the back tires I used to get pile of snow/mud mixed and frozen to the body and it chipped the paint big time. I then got a wide running boards with my 2nd Tacoma which went all the way to the back tires but I still get relatively big rocks now landing on the running board and didn't totally solve the problem. I always wondered how the hell the stuff collects there??? cuz the rear tires are shooting debris backward! so it must come from front tires and I also had big mud guards. lol
Tundra may have the same issue. right in front of the rear tires if you look they have put some sort of clear mask or 3M cover. I can see why since I have same issues with the Tacoma. Both Tacomas were black also :D

I run mine down with my KTM dirt bike in the back. It doesn't bounce with the weight of the bike.

I don't see any / worry about anything getting kicked up...

    It's a truck

Cover your tailgate with blue painters masking tape to protect from any rocks, etc. coming up from the road. Saw that last night on Discovery Channel :D

I've got rock chips on my tailgate but it's from a lawnmower spraying my rear.

I put my dirt bike in the back with the gate down going down dirt/rocky trails for 30 minutes or so and never had an issue.

If you really are worried, get a tailgate mat. You can cover most of the tailgate by adjusting the straps.

my Tacoma is my truck! Tundra has been the highway queen so far! lol a year or 2 from now I may sell the Tacoma.
tundra is a little too wide for some of the narrow mountain roads I go to! with an incoming car you can get stuck and someone has to backup even with the Tacoma!
    Thanks for the post.

An HVAC supplier "may" sell you a roll of plastic film used to cover exposed duct work during comstruction. It sticks to metal like plastic wrap and is easily removed. My buddies have wrapped entire trucks to avoid branch scratches.
