Assume others have had the same issue where the 'ring' trim piece that goes around the interior door handle got brittle and broke. I've now ordered two sets of trim prices and not a one has fit. Well they fit but when you go to operate the handle they pop themselves out, almost like it was molded wrong and has too much material on the spot where the handle comes closest to it in operation.

Any ideas what's going wrong here? Seems impossible to be my lack of ability, given it just presses in and gets held by a single screw...(though the screw doesn't seem to want to seat with these replacement handles)

This is a part you want to buy OEM. The aftermarket shit is never going to match, and OEM is like 20% more, after you've already spent way more than that :D

Private message me your VIN and I'll get you the exact replacement part number. I paid $27/ea for the entire handle/lock assembly, I can't imagine this trim/bezel part would be more than $12.

I say make it fit with a dremel. What part is popping out if the screw holds it back? The handle shouldn’t touch it at all.

Tired to just force it and didn't seem to help. Not sure the Dremel is going to help much unfortunately.

So, here you go. This is based on your specific VIN, year. Moon mist is lighter grey. Med Charcoal is dark grey. Med oak is brownish tan, which I assume is what you have so I linked it. I'm leaving the other unlinked lines in case someone finds this post later, and is also driving a 2000, and needs the part numbers. They changed some of the colors slightly year to year, this is why it's best to go by your VIN as I've done.

Right front door handle trim bezel -

    Med Oak: 692770C010E0
    Moon mist: 692770C010B0
    Med Charcoal: 692770C010B1

Left front door handle trim bezel -

    Med Oak: 692780C010E0
    Moon mist: 692780C010B0
    Med Charcoal: 692780C010B1

When adding to the cart, searching against zip code 06103 (to put me in CT), picking Grieco Toyota @ 415 Taunton Avenue, East Providence, RI, 02914 will net you each part for $15/ea. MSRP is $22, and some dealerships near you are charging that, $15 is the cheapest I can find. But if that's too far away to pick up in person, or you want to skip paying tax (can't get free shipping, the FREESHIP coupon won't work if total is under $75), then when you add to cart, search for dealerships near zip code 35203, and choose the Serra dealership in Birmingham, since the dick who works at their Decatur AL dealership doesn't handle parts for Birmingham.

If you need to verify or need other door card interior parts, here's a link to the parts catalog page for doors based on your VIN, w/o revealing your VIN. And here's the general parts area for your VIN, where you can drill down by parts category.

Appreciate all that will give it a shot once it's back from getting the camera fixed.
