When you consider the discounts dealers took off of msrp and loans they were paying for floor plans on vehicles sitting on the lot, they are very happy with just a little more supply and keep msrp and normal pricing.

I don’t think that the dealers owner is too happy. Sell in volume, make more money, makes the dealer look good to the manuf which in turn gives them kickbacks. Now at MSRP I get an email a week from my dealer because they aren’t moving vehicles. Not to mention the occasional call reminding me they are there to serve me in all my needs. Never has a dealer kiss my a$$ so much. Last time I was there for a battery warranty, on a Saturday afternoon, sales people were walking around with their thumb up their a$$ cause there was no customers. And they have inventory, just not at the right price.

Reminds me of realtors, when the market was hot they bragged about the money they were making. Now they are running scared because high interest rate plus the ridiculous home prices. And just like vehicles, they aren’t worth it.

Well maybe at your dealer , but my dealer local both toyota and Gmc love it they enjoy not having to haggle over price and not having the extra expense of floor plans , fewer sales employees to deal with . They make more per vehicle on each sale , one msrp sale is worth 3 at $500 over dealer cost as before .
So they don't have to sell as many have lower overhead .
The manufacturer were having to extend a lot of discounts and rebates to dealers and buyers before to sell all of the vehicles they made , now they make just as much profit net money maybe not gross .
that is my take on current and future of automobile sales .

Your area I guess is different them mine. As for the future, well that remains to be seen. I don’t think manuf are ok with dealers selling less now. Manuf make money by how many vehicles dealers sell. While it might be true that a dealer makes the profit of 3 cars on the sale of 1 MSRP car, the manuf just sold that 1 car vs 3 cars. If you were the manuf you would want to keep the same level of income, not less

I was at a small non-Toyota dealership to get my car serviced and they only had two new vehicles and maybe a dozen used ones. When I went to pick up my car, I literally had a salesman run over to me as I was about to go inside to see what I needed.

I wouldn't pay over MSRP but the days of getting it under are gone for now unfortunately

I would also think that selling 3 vs 1 would be 2 more chances for service and parts

Which works out well when you have techs and parts available.

Of course right now both are scarce - so it just creates 2 more angry customers upset because their vehicle is taking longer than they feel it should.

for certain low supply models, you'd be lucky to get it at MSRP, but i think supply/demand is starting to improve
