A couple of days ago i bought a 2010 4x4 with a neveda title, i live in california.
So after buying the truck , i found out the tundra cant be smogged because CA emissions is much strict then Neveda. Have any of you had this issue? What did you do fix it?

Also i just got back from oriellys to scan the check engine light and it has many codes including p0420, p0430, p043E,p2401, p2402,p2419.
I know the codes 430,420 are catylatic convertors, im thinking of taking them out and clean them with seafoam.

Now im stuck with a tundra. I dont know what to do with it.
and besides the current issues. What do i have to change to make it meet CA emissions?

Most cars made in the last 30 years are CA compliant. Pretty sure that sticker means not applicable so it is CA compliant. You can Google the codes.

Looks like those codes have to do with emissions so you'll have to get each individual issue fixed. Cleaning the cats may or may not work for those particular codes, I'd be prepared to shell out coin for new ones. You probably won't pass smog until all those issues are fixed, and to register a vehicle in California it must pass smog.

If you're not willing to fix everything, sell it out of state and disclose the issues? Or find a dealer and work out a trade in?

Agreed with the other posters. Your sticker isn’t the problem. Your codes are the problem. Once you fix and clear them, you’ll most likely pass emissions no problem. What sucks is if you bought a truck that was throwing codes without knowing it was throwing codes.

Seafoam isn't going to do anything for the cats. I'm assuming that the truck has alot of miles? I'm betting that there are some O2 sensor codes.

    Too many, but not enough....
Am I missing something here? Doesnt that sticker clearly say that its not for sale in states with CA emission standards?

I'm not an expert, but I think that is if OP is trying to register a brand new vehicle. OP will definitely have to get it smogged though.

I know nothing about California emissions laws. But, we use to have smog tests here in Tennessee and this is one thing that may be a problem if you decide not to keep the truck. Here, if I buy a used car that requires a smog test I cannot get that car titled in my name until it passes a smog test. I ran into this with a project "shell" car I bought in the past. I never intended to drive it on the street or have a street engine in the car. I just wanted to get the paperwork right. I never did find a way around it other than to register it in a county that did not require the smog test. Just something to consider, if it applies to California.

Where did you buy the truck? If it was from a dealer, I'd contact them about reversing the sale. Even if it was a Nevada dealer they should have disclosed the emissions issues.

Sounds like the other codes, non-catalyst codes, are due to a charcoal canister issue that has a TSB issued for it. Doubtful it would be covered on your 2010 but it might help with the repairs.

My Sequoia came from Texas and has a similar sticker. Maybe they are not CA compliant. Dunno. I'd go to a smog shop & see what they say.

Honestly, my opinion is that it's probably going to cost you a few grand to get this fixed properly where it can be smogged in California. I assume the private party you bought it from lives in Nevada? The truck is still driveable with these codes, just won't pass smog.

I'd be cautious of selling it to another private party in California without doing anything to fix the problem because it's the seller's responsibility to provide a valid smog certificate.

He probably bought the truck then realized what all was wrong with it and is just kicking the problem down the line to you.

drive up to Arizona and sell it. they need these :) definitely this will not stay on CA road. Atleast now most companies are selling their vehicles with 50-state clearance.
Its all about registering, you could reg to a po box in Gila Bend Ariz and drive back to CA? this is pain. Good Luk

I live in CA and purchased my Tundra from the original owner, who also lives in CA, so my truck has always been in this state and this is the sticker I have. I am fairly certain, though, that even with a sticker that states not compliant or for sale in states with CA emissions laws, the truck can be registered here if 1.) it has more than 7,500 miles on it and 2.) it passes required smog testing, which any fairly modern Tundra should achieve no problem. I'm guessing #1 has been met so it's figuring out why all the codes for emissions issues are present before #2 can be met. Are you able to check to see if the cats have been altered in any way? I'm wondering if the cats had been stolen in the past and a former owner replaced them with after-market versions and the codes were never addressed. FYI, in CA you cannot have after-market cats. They must be OEM. Smog shops will fail you for defective equipment if they are not OE ...in fact, you cannot even buy after-market cats here and if you try and order them online from out of state, the sellers won't ship them here. I've had vehicle registration issues in the past similar to this and ever since then, I make it a point to only buy vehicles that have already been registered in this state so I know I won't run into registration or emissions paperwork issues.

Get a PO box in another state & register & plate it there. Forward the mail from the out of state box to your CA address. It will give you time to figure things out

Possibly a silly question, but have you checked to make sure the catalytic converters are still there? In many states the cats are cut out, sold, and replaced with flexible pipe. The codes indicate that you have problems with the cats and with the evap system. Making sure all of the parts are there is a good start.

Sell it, or drive it, in Kansas. They don't have emissions requirements.

    From here: https://www.emissions.org/loc/kansas-emissions-testing/
Kansas Smog Check / Emissions Test
The State of Kansas does not have any vehicle emissions test requirements since the state lacks any metropolitan areas that do not comply with the U.S. Clean Air Act. However, Kansas does have a vehicle inspection program the Kansas Highway Patrol administers to certain vehicles when getting a state registration to deter vehicle theft. Vehicle owners can usually obtain a registration with nothing more than a VIN inspection for most vehicles.

If you're taking this to Kansas and not returning to CA, I would not go to all the trouble and cost to try and register it in this state. The annual registration fees are ridiculous, plus the whole smog requirements stuff. Way cheaper in other states.

A friend of mine told me Kansas has ridiculous property taxes, high state income tax, and insanely high property tax rates. I thought that seemed odd, so I looked it up, and I found that putting a Kansas license plate on my truck last year would have cost me over $800. Unbelievable.

Yes, basically the Phoenix and Tucson areas. If the vehicle in new enough, it's just a OBD2 and gas cap check.
