That’s a great way to go too. If you all have a free day look up Longwood garden just over the PA/DE line. Cool history and there are many good restaurants in the area. Really great restaurants in Delaware as you come down to head down Del-Mar-Va

If you are interested in Civil War battlefields, check out the ones just east of Charlottesville, among them are Trevilians, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Chancellorville, Fredericksburg, all about an hour away from C'ville. And forget Richmond, nothing to see since they removed the statues.

Yeah I figure you can throw a rock most any direction and hit a battle field.

@DaBoro54 We have a plant in Salisbury I've been to many times, there's a seafood join around there I have to hit again. Hope it's still there. Think it was the DelMarVa cafe or something. I'd have to look it up.

@Moon Puppy so you already know the area. You’re good to go.

never heard of it but I’m not in Salisbury all the time.

We did Gettysburg as a overnight on the way down to Topsail, NC. We spent the morning roaming around Gettysburg, and honestly would need 2-3 days to feel like I fully explored it.

It should be comfortable this time of year, but probably won't have fall foliage for a couple weeks or more.

If you are anywhere down on I81 near Lexington.....VMI is a neat stop. Great museum and very pretty campus buildings. Washington and Lee University is right there as well. Further up towards New Market is a place called the Southern Kitchen. Fantastic fried chicken and other feel good eats.
    https://southernkitchenva.com/

If going by Cambridge MD on 50 towards Salisbury and all there is a fantastic diner with outstanding breakfasts called Cindy's Kitchen.

If you do get to downtown Annapolis there is a cool joint for chow if you like Cajun type food called Mrs. Shirley's. And there is a neat bar away from town called Heroes Pub which is cool especially if you have any ties to public service. Annapolis is neat with the USNA down there and lots of shops and such down town near ego alley where the rich park their boats.

And glad to hear you're checking out Harper's Ferry. That is a cool town with a lot of history as well. If you dig trains at all you will likely see some there. They have a cool wax museum
    there as well.

    Safe travels!!

One pro tip for coming down Rte 13. Keep your WAZE on watch the speed limit signs. There are a few slow down areas where PoPo likes to sit & wait.

What he said is correct. Especially in some of the smaller DE towns like Felton. Watch the speed in them and on the Eastern Shore of VA.

Delmar Diner right on the boarder on US 15

That's good to know, that's what I'm planning on about 2-3 days. We're not going till Mar.

@AircareTundra I think we'll save Annapolis for the DC trip we'll make in the future. That trip will have Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, DC, Mount Vernon and other points of interest. That'll be a busy trip.

Really appreciate the tips folks, it's filling up our itinerary and emptying my wallet.

Wife and I have been talking about this and she's really not into doing the Bay Bridge, guess she not into driving underwater. We're now thinking of going from Gettysburg down to Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg. Anyone know how much time we should allocate there? Right now I'm looking 5 days so far I think, feels like we have 2 more we can be gone.

Williamsburg is a very cute place, people are dressed in colonial era clothing, the blacksmith shop is an actual working shop.
Yorktown is cool too, definitely check out battlefield. If it’s on your way, check out marine corps museum off 95 and mt. Vernon. After seeing Yorktown in person then watching film at mt Vernon museum you get a real good idea of the battle.

I've never tried to do it like that. Always a day trip for a specific site. I would think a day for each with an open day in case you run out of time at one. If you don’t need the extra day, mariners museum in Newport News is pretty cool.

Wooo...I've read a bunch of the South Pacific books, Sledge, Lackie and some of the other guys from the 1st Marines.

Good to know these sites are full on day trips by themselves. I know we can do a drive by at Appomattox and we've added Harpers Ferry as a definite stop.

There's never enough time to do everything lol. But Yorktown & Jamestown/W'burg are soo close to each other and you have to drive the Colonial Parkway between them. Oh and then there's ferry (free) across the James River right there at the Jamestown Museum :p

I honestly believe that the Historic Triangle and surrounding area could be a week long trip by itself. In addition to the things mentioned the W&M campus and Virginia Living Museum are places to check out.

Beautiful country down there. I used to spend some time down that way every now and again. Liked to get breakfast at Mineral Diner, lunch at Tres Potrillos and sometimes Barbeque Exchange

    Me again.
I'm questioning my timing here. I see that many of the Museums around Gettysburg are only open on the weekend but I was thinking we get there mid week. What museum is THE MUSEUM we need to hit, I wonder if all these others are just tourist attractions? I saw one listed as a museum with an all you can eat buffet o_O

Are the guided tours worth the money? If so which one would be better? I've read the online reviews but not sure how far I can trust that.

    thanks.

Thanks for thinking about us Bryan
Short answer is no, we didn't go.
Life threw some zingers at us. Wife broke her knee cap tripping over my trailer hitch in March, she's still recovering from that slowly. She's still doing PT but doing much better.

One of the graphs of my bypass failed, ended up having heart cath and a stint and then next day the femoral artery they went in for the heart busted loose and I came real close to bleeding out. Long story but i'm MUCH better now.

Wife can't make short road trips yet, let alone something like this. Maybe next year?
