My wife and I are having our 30th anniversary in March. We've always talked about driving up VA and PA to see battle fields and sites. We're planning on a week to ten days depending on how long she can be away from the dogs.

Gettysburg is top on our list but I told her that Appomattox and Montecillo are on the way. I'm thinking a couple of days at Gettysburg, a day at Montecillo/Charlottesville and just a drive by at Appomattox (I went there years ago and know there's not a lot to see but it's still interesting just the same).
She said she wants to drive up the Shenandoah valley.

We plan to come back down DelMar and over the Chesapeake Bay bridge and across country VA, might come on down outer banks and hit Kitty Hawk. Depends...

Anyone have any route and site suggestions? We'll do interstate to get up there but once in the area I want to be off the interstate.

I'm in Western SC so 95 would be out of the way until return trip, maybe even then I would avoid it.

I see Natural Bridge is right at Appomattox so adding that to the list. Will check out the rail road.

The highlight of any trip for me is the food. That said, in Gettysburg I recommend getting a meal at The Gettysburger and some ice cream at Mr. G’s!

Shenandoah is fun but I would only do it one way. The brutal 30 mph speed limit for 100 miles is very taxing. Do it either on the way up or down and then take the interstate the other direction.

Great Falls in VA and MD and Antietam Battlefield are also suggestions to visit since it's nearby.

If you're crossing the Bay Bridge, stop in downtown Annapolis (referred to as DTA). Good food, ice cream, fudge shops, the whole nine.

Not real familiar with your planned route/area, but 2.5 hours west of Gettysburg on the old Lincoln Highway is the Flight 93 National Memorial. We were out there a few years ago (flew into Pittsburgh and road tripped the Lincoln Highway to Lancaster area), and it's a nice memorial park around the site of the crash. If you'll be in the area it's worth a stop.

There are some options in the surrounding Gettysburg area. Antietam Battlefield (driving tour) in Sharpsburg, MD. Washington's Monument State park on the Appalachian trail (short hike) near Boonsboro, MD. High Rock Overlook in Cascade, MD. Tommy's Pizza in Gettysburg. Some nice routes in the area are PA 30, 16, 15.

If you don't already have the Veterans Park pass for Federal parks,Highly recommend getting it. Real good German Restaurant off 81 called Edelweiss. And great little coffee shop in Gettysburg called Deja Brew. I don't get past too many coffee shops without wife wanting to try one.

I think he's referring to Skyline Drive...which is National Park northern portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are lots of scenic overlooks..but it can be slow if you're looking to make time.

On the return trip Chatham winery and Cape Charles on the VA eastern shore are nice. There's also Assateague and Chincoteague. If you do go cross VA the moonshine trail and the bluegrass trail are somewhat interesting. If you decide on the OBX route you'll pass within 2 miles of my house. Let me know and if timing works we can grab a bite.

Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg are full of history, but taking the CBBT would make them way out of your way.

I'm not familiar with the western part of the state as much. I've only really hunted and camped out there. I do know if you're looking to make time Skyline drive is not your friend.

I went to Gettysburg a few years ago, it was awesome, I walked pickets charge in 100 degree weather, while walking it, it was easy to see why it was such a blood bath. Did a ghost tour at night also. I’d definitely go back.

That's going to be another trip that we'll loop in DC also.

    Thanks for the invite!

I'm really thinking we get up to Lynchburg first day and stay the night. Get up and go to Appomattox and Montecillo then stay the night in Charlottesville. We can pickup the Skyland Dr in Waynesboro and get off after she gets motion sick! Then head for Gettysburg for a multi night stay. Probably hit some sites between the two. That gets us up there. Now to think about the way back.

Highly suggest Blue & Grey on the square, Tommy's, Ernie's Texas Lunch, more casual dine in would be Dobbins House and Fahrnesworth house, both rich in history.
My Tundra is usually parked across the street from the B & G, at Union Cigars. Stop in or chime in while in town. Salute

If you are in Charlottesville for lunch and at Monticello, check out Michie Tavern. Great fried chicken and period type food from mid 18th century.

    https://www.michietavern.com/

If you’re into beer, wine, cider try the Brew Ridge Trail for plenty of stops. It’s RT 151 between Charlottesville and I-81.

if you’re into hiking check out Crabtree falls and Natural Bridge in those areas as well.

I’m local to Charlottesville so can point you to many places around here.

don't think so, we'll be skirting DC metro. Once we get off the Skyland at Fort Royal we'll probably be on 81 heading to Gettysburg as quick as possible. 100 miles at 30mpg will wear ya out.

"Skirting DC metro", you may consider I-270 or I-70 to Rt 15, takes you right past Gettysburg.

2nd on Blue and Grey, Farnsworth House usually has some pretty great cocktails in the tavern as well. Battlefield Brew Works is pretty neat as well, it's in an old barn that served as a Confederate hospital during the battle.

My wife would never let me forget about this place, they've done the diorama battlefield but all of the soldiers are cats.

On a travel note make sure you have a EZ-Pass if you're planning on using the PA Turnpike it's ridiculously expensive.

We're basically going to do what Lee did, cross the boarder and get into Gettysburg and turn around right back out. I don't think he had an EZPass. But you're right, I'll probably sign up for one because I don't know where I might hit a toll road.
@nopsFU Looks like US 15 is my avenue of attack.

I've been to DC in my truck once, was not easy parking and nice photo the DC Traffic folks got of the back of my truck came at a high price. When we go to DC it'll be in the Venza.

Looking at the map we may go up 81 from Front Royal and cut across to Harpers Ferry then meet up with 15 and take it into Gettysburg.

Thanks for the input folks, with all the eateries suggestions we may need a couple more days!

US 15 is a good route. Take 29 North from Charlottesville to 15. Should take you west of Northern VA traffic.

There’s a few farm stands just before you hit MD border if you want some fresh produce.

If you do decide to come the bay bridge down to CBBT there are a bunch of cool spots to check out on the way. Super good restaurant called the narrows on Kent Island that is on the water. Gets you over the bay bridge to the good side lol.

A few good breweries/winery's I can direct you too if you're into that. I echo Cape Charles and Chincoteague as solid spots to check out. I used to work on the MD side. Those horses are cool but can be jerks lol.

Technically I could take US 29 all the way up there as it comes through Anderson SC, I could get on it in 15 minutes. But MAN that'll be a lot of redlights!!
I agree but wife wants to do the Skyland Drive. We'll see what she things after the first hour at 30mph.

Marked it but I'm not sure we'll be going through the DC/Baltimore metro area. might snake across PA into Del and come down the peninsula from that direction. Still thinking the return route out.
