Share your aftermarket dash cam setups please. Doing my search now but I might end up getting Garmin Mini 2. How did you plug it up?

    I don't want to spend $500 on Toyota's

I'm also looking for an aftermarket dash cam. Do they make one that uses one of the USB ports? Since my truck doesn't have a standard DC outlet. They do have hard wire kits but................

I'm running a Garmin Mini 2. I got the adapter that Dongar makes that allows you to run the USB power cable up into the opening for the mirror and connect where the toyota cam plugs in. Looks clean, I'm happy with it.

Thats a clean install. Found the DC outlet. Had my truck for 9 months still learning it.

This was what I was thinking of doing. I didn’t order that adapter because in the description, it stated that auto dimming mirror is required and mine didn’t come with that so wasn’t sure if it would work?

Not sure what that is all about. Trucks without auto dimming can still have the toyota cam so obviously the power harness is there regardless of what type of mirror you have. I wonder if it has to do with routing of the wire. The toyota cams run the wire directly above the cam where the headliner meets the glass, not through the mirror opening. You could always pull the roof console down and check out what's going on up there. It's very simple. The console comes down as a single unit, don't take it apart. The front side (closest to windshield) pulls straight down. Then slide forward to release the rear side. You don't even need to disconnect anything, just let it hang out of the way while you're in there. There is also a trim piece around the mirror base that comes off easily and will allow you to see better up in there. If you go with the adapter, make sure you use zip ties or double sided tape to keep the connectors from rattling around up there.

For t hose of you that have a dash cam, do you guys leave it in the truck permanently or remove it when you get somewhere. I always have this feeling that someone will break in just to steal it.

Thanks! I'll just order now and deal with it when it comes in lol

Does this give you access to 24 hour power?

The quality looks good from what I can see on the camera screen. I'll have to pull footage to see how good it looks compared to windshield nounting. I'll let you know. I'll try to check it this afternoon.

That's looks good, I may give that a try. Currently, I concealed a long cable and ran it to the USB outlets in the backseat so it's out of the way.

I leave mine in because it has parking lot monitoring in case of hit and run. I hope I don't jinx myself with this statement, but, I've used a dashcam for 10+ years and always left it in.

I'm sure it records upside down but you can use any editing software to flip it to the correct orientation if needed. The outlet only supplies power when you turn on the engine or accessory power on.

Out of the box it will power on/off with the truck. The harness in the truck has 5 wires coming in. The adapter is tapping into only 2 of them. Because the toyota cam has parking mode, I'm thinking that one set of wires to the harness must be constant power. I'm considering modifying my adapter to work off the constant power, but need to research more on the garmin side to make sure it's not just going to record 24/7. I just don't want to mess with the camera every time I go for a drive.

I had my Garmin 56 installed in my Tacoma with the hardwired Garmin parking mode cable so it had constant power and worked as a security/vandalism/crash cam when parked. https://www.garmin.com/en-CA/p/587564/pn/010-12530-03 (Garmin Canada link)

With my Tundra I run it from the dash "cigarette lighter" socket and a USB converter plug, but that's just powered when the truck is running.
I just ordered and received the Garmin OBD2 constant power cable which is relatively new to Garmin, but haven't installed it yet to see how it works.

There are 2 other threads in this forum that cover a lot of what you all are looking for. Do the search and you'll find a connector in the headliner available...

I didn’t want to start and entirely new dash cam thread but I wanted to know if there is anyone using the alpine DVR -C320R specifically and also if you have it paired with a alpine halo unit?

    thanks in advance

Dongar cable, Viofo 4K dual cam, and TheDashCamStore bracket (get the long version).

Couldn’t be any happier with this setup… And my god it is super clear.

Looks great but for crew max owners
Rigging the rear camera may not be an option since the back window goes down.
But i imagine someone has over come that obstacle

I think this is the perfect set up and the way I want to go on my truck. Do you have a link/part number for the rear view cam bracket from TheDashCamStore. Thx.

EDIT: I found the link, just missed it in one of the responses.
