hello all, found a 2005 tundra TRD off road with 180k miles , truck and frame look to be in decent condition for its year , fair car fax , but the timing belt needs replacing . they want $11k. is this a reasonable price? just need it for VERY light daily driver , i work less than a mile away from home, not going to do any towing or long distance, just want something reliable to get to work.

for context i have a 2020 ranger that I rarely use and it seems silly to pay 600 monthly for a truck i barely drive anymore except to work, so I'm thinking of downsizing.

the link if anyone wants to take a peak. id appreciate any input . Thanks all and have a great day!

I’ve got a 2005 in very good condition. Just cost me $2,750 for the dealer to change the timing belt, water pump, pulleys ….. my 2005 has 208,650 miles and runs like new.

I’m looking at a 2011, 4wd with 167,000, more bells and whistles, 5.7L v8, with timing chain for $17,000. So price seems high to me

One of our members has almost 700,000 miles. Many have 300k or more. 180,000 miles is not concerning for these engines. Just know that other parts like suspension could likely need to be replaced but that goes for any vehicle.

Is the listing wrong? Price shows $9,995 now. Seems fair for a 2WD. Just make sure you thoroughly check the frame in person. Don't go by pictures alone.

4x2? :bored: Not worth getting out of bed for me.

That said, yeah if it drives smooth and the tranny doesn’t hard shift it may be worth it although I’d want 4x4 for that price.

Just my perspective/particular situation. I live one mile from work. I walk that four times a day walking home for lunch. Maybe sell the Ford, buy the Tundra and a bicycle/good hiking shoes/boots?

I can’t answer that since I don’t usually look at 2wd and what they go for nowadays. Some of our southern members here have a better handle on that.

    I was thinking the same.

Buy one of these for a 1 mile commute.

When the weather is nice, I just ride my mountain bike. The commute is about five minutes. When the weather is uncooperative, I walk. That takes about 20 minutes. I have a difficult time rationalizing driving a truck for that distance, it barely warms up and we know that's not good for it's longevity.

Never take your truck to the dealer for anything other than free warranty work. $2700 for that is a complete rip off. Find your local mechanic who does the best Toyota work.

I was gonna say the same about the price. I did go to my dealer for timing belt, water pump, etc and it was around $1100 or so. Seems @RHickman may have gotten shafted on that price.

As for OP just keep in mind driving 2 or so miles a day isn't enough to really get stuff warmed up. These short drives can wear things out quicker than high mile commutes. Need to adjust oil change interval and some maintenance things accordingly. I would personally keep the ranger and buy a shitbox for work commute that has low value. 92-96 Camry's are great for that if you're not one to worry about appearances.

The problem with this gen Tundra is at about 200K a few maintenance issues seem common. My old 2005 had to have the entire steering rack replaced at 192K and I did the CV axles with it as one had small leak and figured other would also soon. While doing research at that time it seemed extremely common to happen between 180K and 230K so if it has not been done it's something to look at. I did it myself and if you can do basic plus maintenance you should be fine. Engine wise at 180K you need to have no fears whatsoever. The engine is virtually never an issue with this gen. but 180K on every bushing, belt, etc is an issue for sure. 11K seems a little high especially for a 4x2 but in this insane market who knows.

My 1997 4WD T-100 V6 3.4L engine and driveline perform like new at 270,000 miles. I've done the timing belt once and have one ready to do it again any time I'm in the mood (I looked at the timing belt 6 months ago when I pulled the cover as part of replacing all the other belts and it looked great). I'm on the original water pump, plug wires and coils.

If this Tundra checks the necessary boxes for you then do not worry about the mileage. She's but a teenager.

I bought my tundra with 170k miles on it for 10k. But its a limited 4x4. Id be looking into private sales all day. A ranger to a tundra isnt much of a downsize! but I love my truck and she drives like a beauty. Have just over 200k on it now.

that's a good point , but the problem for me there , is bills are so tight , and my payment (for me) on the ranger is really high at $600 , not to mention insurance , I virtually have no money to save up even to buy a clunker. my initial idea was to trade it (the ranger) in for something older and a lot less on payment , that I can count on just for work and the market , then save what I would've payed on the ranger for repairs , other bills on the truck OR an eventual new vehicle when the truck dies. I didn't know driving too LITTLE was a thing , thank you for that! ill have to try to remember , literally would have tried to drive it like 10 min a day otherwise lol.

My mistake , I meant like total price / payment wise. Yea i wish i could go that route too, but it would take years for me to save up for enough to make an offer on what private sales are asking for. its so hard around here man , in AZ its either got 280k miles , over 20 grand , or all kinds of accidents, Carfax issues and rust lol, exaggerating a little , but i can see why one in decent condition is so sought after. Still searching though , widen the range maybe .

Dependable and inexpensive....start looking at first generation Tacomas 4 cylinder 2.7 L 2wd. Notorious for reliability and affordability.

Oh yeah I hear you there. I lived in AZ for a while and it took forever to find a good deal on a truck with somewhat close to low mileage. $600 a month is a good chunk of change too. Hopefully you can find something.

They've gotten damn near impossible to find under $10-12k for a base model, though. I was hunting a couple years back, all I wanted was extra cab with power windows/locks and either 2.4 or 2.7 but the reality was I found twenty 1st gen Tundras for every 1 nice space cab 1st gen Tacos under $12-15k.
