I just had the dealership fix my squeaky dashboard. They had the dash off to put some felt and foam underneath. Probably disconnected the battery also. But now my Miles To Empty display is reading incorrectly. Displays about 190 miles left with half a tank. (26 gallon tank) Filled up the tank, ran it all the way to empty, and filled up half way, but it’s still way off. Anyone ever experience this?

If they disconnected the battery, it’ll relearn over time.

It'll take a few tanks to relearn. Mine did this once after having battery disconnected for an extended time.

Yeah I’m serious. :D I discovered it on the very last day of my factory warranty. Now my warranty is over.

Went to the dealership last week for an oil change and when I drove off I noticed my miles to empty was incorrect.

It’s telling me I have more miles left than I should have. I ran the tank down filled it up and I’m still having the same problem.

I have only filled up once since this happened because I don’t drive a lot of miles.

Interesting note, I disconnected the battery the week before because I had to replace a motor on my AMP power steps. But I can’t remember noticing the issue at that time

Is there any way for me to correct this issue? Or reset some thing?

They probably disconnected your battery on the oil change for whatever reason.

    Reset it?
You can disconnect the battery again for a few minutes.
I'm sure there is a button on your steering wheel to push to reset it as well.
    Check your manual.

It takes the truck a few tanks of gas to relearn your MPG and miles to empty.

When I said reset, I was wondering if there’s some setting in the display menu because I checked the carefully but really didn’t see anything.

It’s probably when you disconnected the battery. Like said above, give it a few tanks and it’ll relearn. When I unhook my battery mine goes up to almost 600 DTE, but settles at 411 after a few tanks.

I’d guess maybe 38 gallon tank x 16 mpg (middle of Toyotas mpg estimate) = around 600 DTE? I have bigger tires and a heavy foot so mine going down to 411 is expected. It’s always 411 after fillup.

I also noticed when I get down to less than 100 DTE, sometimes I can go a few miles before the DTE mile will drop 1 mile. I assumed it was because when empty, you actually have 6 gallons or so left so the calculation is off a little.

Sure, the math makes sense but I never got anywhere near 600 on my display. Before I disconnected the battery I remember it was around 415 on the display every time I was completely full and about 200 at half a tank.

Disconnecting the battery resets the ECU to factory defaults.
It does the same thing on EVERY Tundra.

HOW DOES ONE RESET IT THEMSELVES?
    RTFM.........

Hey Navi, I've got you beat!!! My range jumps all over the place, sometimes its close to 600 miles and other times it hovers around the 400's. I don't really pay any attention to it. I've run the tank down to the refuel light and beyond on occasion but was somehow only able to squeeze 32 gallons in a 38 gallon tank when I filled her up. There's no way Toyota has it set to sandbag 6 gallons in "reserve" for when the gas light comes on. Oh well I guess!
ALSO--Funny both our photos show the outside temp to be the same 78 degrees!

I just got a used 21’ this year. It looks like to me that the miles to empty is based on the average number on the home page? That number , the average, only seems to move once a tank for me regardless of how good of tank average I have on the cluster. Right now my tank average is 20.2, my home average is 15.9…distance to empty was like 573 or something on my fill yesterday. It seems like that number adjusts as it runs out with your tank average? Also I can only squeeze in 32 gallon in around 25 miles to empty. I was told the tundra does have the 6 gallons in reserve to help cool the fuel pump.

Yes, it does adjust based on how you drive, i've noticed that as well. for me, i do almost all around town so my avg per tank is really bad. sometimes we do family trips and i can see it bump-up during those trips. I've also heard the Tundra keeps a few gallons in reserve but didn't know it was to cool the fuel pump.

if you ever disconnect the battery, it resets the ECU and that's when we start to see the Range become skewed.. or at least that's what happened in my case.

What type of driving do you? is it a mix of highway and around town? i'm mostly around town so my avg mpg on the computer is pretty bad, around 10 mpg. we usually take my wife's Sequoia for family trips. we can get around 18 mpg or so on a road trip in the Sequoia, plus we have more room for the all the kid's stuff
