I am getting ready to install a CB radio in my Tundra and need to tap a fuse. Since its a CB won't need more then 5 or 10 amp fuse. Under the driver side there is a fuse box and I remember a thread but cannot locate ( lazy ) it that someone suggested an open fuse slot that is controlled by the ignition. Anyone have a suggestion as to what open fuse slot to use.

    Thanks,

    Kurt

i'd leave the fuse box alone, you never know what kind of issues you may have messing with it.
run a dedicated line from the battery with an inline fuse.
but, the real question is, why in the world are you using a CB?
    :p

A ran a dedicated line to the battery with my setup. CB's come in handy during hunting season, wheeling with others who have CBs when you can't get a cell signal (canyons can get quite deep here), also kind of hard to use a cell phone in a disaster situation with no cell service. I see lots of CBs on off road rigs here in CO.

    Few reasons why.
    1) had money for the CB radio 2) So the other occupants in the vehicle can rile other CBers on the air. 3) I am the only one in the family with a Ham license. 4) still undecided on what ham radio I want and where to install it in the Tundra.

Want to get my ham license, even better than CB... I've got a SSB CB that reaches out pretty good at times but ready to make that leap up to a Ham radio.

@matluth what gauge wire did you use?

Had my General license now for almost three years and still don't own a ham radio.

Well the CB I purchased does not have SSB so it is only 4watts that is the reason I want to tap into the fuse box. Now if this was a 50 or 100watt ham then I would go directly to the battery.

I already have several wires going thru the firewall so it was fairly easy to run another. You could also tap into the fuse box under the hood.

Definitley agree walk away from CB. good secondary to have.
But if you really needed to use the fuse.. under the kick panel you can add a fuse it to a cigarette lighter. I wouldn't tap directly to ignition.. cigarette lighter only on when ignition on.

Not planning to tap directly into the ignition just wanted to see if someone had previously used an empty slot on the fuse box located inside the Tundra.

    License for ham... really.. smh.
i have a kenwood ham radio, dont recall off hand what model, think its the dv71 or something, but the cognac in my cup is making it hard for me to remember.
anyhow, i dont care to talk to anyone on a ham radio, nope not interested in talking to some one in africa or in russia...
only reason i run a ham radio is to be able to reach out when off road, my ham with antenna setup at 50w pushes upward of 30miles. cant get that with cb, unless its heavily boosted, and even then its not going to get that far out.
