I was chasing down a heat shield rattle and I noticed this broken wire housing. There is no wire in it and it just kind of flakes away. I can't figure out what it would be for. I'm sure someone here knows. No CEL or issues. Just happened to notice it. 20220910_182223.jpg

Its the grounding wire for the transmission, pretty easy to replace.

Good deal, thanks guys. I figured it was some sort of ground wire but I wasn't sure what the point was as I'm not suffering any adverse effects. I did order the new strap above so I'll throw it back on since it's an easy quick fix.

A note on how important ground straps can be. The original Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon models had a problem with premature front wheel bearing failures. The cause was found to be a ground strap that was bolted to the engine but had a toothed push on connection at the painted unibody. The connection wasn't electrically sound so some current passed through the engine, drivetrain and wheel bearing to the front suspension and to chassis ground. The arcing in the bearings caused them to fail. I worked for a Chrysler Dodge Plymouth dealer when the service bulletin came out. Fix was to scrape the paint away on the unibody under the ground clip.

A Facebook group member said he was having issues with bad shifts which is what prompted him to replace his and it fixed his issue.

I will be for sure. I already ordered the part. I have no idea how long it's been broken. Probably quite a while.

I welded 3 transmission shift cables before I realized the ground wire wasn't reinstalled after removing the engine. Not on a Tundra but none the less they are important!!

I ended up buying one at the local part store and put it on yesterday. Took 5 minutes and luckily I was able to get the nuts off without snapping anything. Crazy, the thing had basically disintegrated.

Should be good for another several years now.

I will. I'm wondering how long it was broken.
