Help me change my all white 2004 limited’s whiteness

I have a 2004 access cab limited 4wd with 55,000 miles. It is in excellent condition but I want to off set some of the all white look. I’m likely a lot older than most of you guys so don’t want to make it look too off-road etc although I do love some of the builds done in that style it wouldn’t be me. 90% of my driving is in town and freeway.

I have a new set of gunmetal grey 17” trd wheels and I think I can go max of 265-70-17 on the tires. I’m thinking of painting the wheel well flares side trim, all emblems and the grill in the same grey color. I don’t have a clue if this will end up looking cool or dorky. There is just too much white with the bumpers, grill etc.

I have a lot of cars that I know exactly what to do with and have been a car guy all my life. For some reason I stare at this truck and just cannot get a gut feeling for what it needs to look better than a snowball.

anyway, any suggestions would be great. I haven’t seen one with the grey wheels just black. I am very glad to see you young people doing all these cool projects, rehabilitating old trucks, learning valuable skills that will last your lifetime. These past years I have been busy with old 356 Porsches which are their own animal to contend with.

I put 250,000 miles on my first 2002 Tundra that I bought new. My daughter drove it through high school and college and I sold it super cheap to a friend who still drives it. I bought a brand new Tacoma and just couldn’t stand the lack of comfort and the shift mapping for mileage so I found another Tundra, likely paid too much but I don’t care I love it except for mileage of course. The newer Tundras won’t fit down a narrow driveway to my shop. To me 1st generation Tundras were perfect size.

I think it looks great, super clean and a great survivor. I would be hesitant to do paint work unless it was needed. Like if the paint was flaking on flares, paint them as you like, but if its good and it does look so, id keep it as is and use wheels or other accents to make it yours.

Maybe you could have the flares wrapped instead, so you could remove the wrap if you ever wanted it to look stock.

 

Thanks for the reply. I am leaning on doing very little and wrapping might be a great way to reverse it if I don’t like the way it comes out. Thanks for that tip.

I tend to keep things on my cars stock. Some of my older cars are now very much desirable because they were left alone and not modded. I guess these old Tundras in great shape are becoming more desirable as time moves on too.

 

Maybe black out the mirrors, Black trim tape between front and rear windows. Might even black out the grill.

All could be done just to mock it up and see if you like it.

I once did two Honda wheels with electrical tape just so I could step back and look.

 

I’m a big Plastidip fan. Can pull it off if you don’t like it. See my post in Chrome Delete thread. I’ve done mirror caps, badges, fake leather piece that is above glove box since it was sticky mess. Plan on doing grill next. Contemplating the silver part of running boards.

Lowes seems to be cheaper but don’t know if they have colors other than black which is all I have used.

 

If you don't like the color....rusteoleum will fix that:

 

I think paint the grills, front and rear bumpers, flares and from side trim down grey
Look good…

 

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated for the ideas. I Will test it all out with non permanent tape, plastic dip etc until I get the look I want then decide paint or wrap.

 

I keep cars and motorcycles stock too, way more value, if that matters. I do it because I like them better that way and usually the design and engineering departments are pretty good at their jobs. It's only original once. Here's my stock, original owner 2001. The only thing I've added is an electric brake control and a bed mat.

 

I think black fender flares would be a nice touch.

 

Get some A/T tires with those new Gunmetal Gray rims and call it a day!

Great looking truck. It's amazing what some new tires & rims will do for the appearance of a truck. Just my opinion of course, but I would

do anything else to your truck if it were mine.

I painted all my chrome black on my white 2002, aka Gringo. I already had black flares though so I repainted them black.

 

How about wrapping the A-pillar and roof black?
Look up Rocky Ridge or Black Widow trucks.

 

Just by changing head lights, tail lights, side step, bull bar and add fog lights could also change the look of the trucks.

Resurrecting this to say: Install a chrome rear bumper and a chrome grille from one of the non-Limited models. I need a painted bumper, have a nice fairly new chrome bumper and have a white+chrome grille if you want to trade up

just don’t black anything out. Gunmetal, smoked, sure. Blackout on white trucks is tired and rarely looks as good as it does on FGV’s truck above. His is a standout case.
