im running 6 qts of 5w-20 and 2 qt 5w-30 this change because thats what i had in the garage. I run 5w-30 plenty of times too.

my wife’s honda has 5w-20 right now. Sounds light years better than it did on 0w-20.

Blackstone Labs loved my 10,000 mile Mobil 1 0W20 so much they kept asking me to go 13,000 miles. So I chose to...........stop sending them oil samples. :D:D:D

Did the oil sample you sent to Blackstone come from the piston groves that support the oil ring? Did you disassemble the engine to get the sample? Thats were the oil gets carbonized which causes the oil ring to get stuck and not conform to the cylinder wall causing scuffing and excessive oil consumption. change your oil every 5-7K miles.

If your oil has the correct Chemistry and detergents, you don't have to worry about carbon build up or stuck rings, some oils even free carbonized rings and remove build up. 5-7k is a waste of money.

This video was actually brought up at the open house, and it was absolutely obliterated. Don't trust some random youtube mechanic, but if you want to, then by all means, do so. I'll trust the people who have put their life into making great oils, who have literally written the books and developed today's oil as we know it.

It's honestly too much to detail in a post. The Q&A was several hours long. And I'm not nearly as good at conveying the message as I received it, and I don't really like going into details about oil related stuff, because almost everyone has their mind made up that they're right, and anyone who doesn't share their oil related opinions are wrong, plus I'm just a random dude on the internet. So take that for what's it worth. If you'd like to get in touch with people far more knowledgeable than myself to answer any oil related questions, I can probably make that happen.

    Rant
My opinion on 5k OCIs is that it's a waste of a precious resource, and dumping oil that can go another 5k is bad practice. If you look at the views on that video, and the internet wide discussion on it, and how many people are going to switch from 10k-5k intervals because of it, think of how many 10s or 100s of thousands of gallons more oil is going to be used as a consequence, at a time when people are having trouble finding oil on the shelf as it is. If you have 10,000 tundra owners who switched from 10k to 5k OCIs, that's 20,000 gallons of oil wasted.

I used to follow manufacturer instructions on my Subaru which had 7500oci per manual. This was a 2014 bought new. I followed that religiously. By 60,000 miles that car was burning a quart every couple thousand miles. Subaru themselves decided to actually change the oci for those cars back to 5000 because it was such a wide spread issue. Toyota themselves actually says right on there faq

"If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32˚ F, or extensive idling; the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of what type of oil is used." Source: https://support.toyota.com/s/article/What-are-the-oil-chan-7604?language=en_US.

The majority of people fall into that "special operating conditions" category. Also I think you're over estimating how many people who own vehicles actually follow forums or watch youtube videos about oil changes and do their own oil changes. Also oil is not getting dumped into the ocean. Oil recycling is heavily regulated. We dont have a shortage of oil in this country, just a shortage of production. I personally dont care if someone wants to change their oil every 20k because Blackstone labs says they can. Thats awesome for them and I wish them the best. From my personal experience of extended oci and 0w20 oil causing oil consumption, I'm not willing to risk it. Not to mention I fall into Toyotas own recommended 5000 miles oci for special operating conditions.

I never said the oil was dumped in the ocean. I was just saying that you're wasting good oil by draining it early. And we do have a shortage of oil on the shelves, which is what I was implying. I wasn't saying there was a shortage of crude (I work in oil refineries), there is a shortage of additives though.

You have alot of good points, and I understand where you are coming from. For our tundras, they're not super picky, and very easy on oil. Mine is gonna hit 250k soon, and doesn't burn oil or have any issues. I run 5w30 since I tow alot and offroad pretty frequently. Toyotas recommendations for a 5k OCI is more of a CYA kinda thing. As long as your oil has a healthy TBN, add pack, the wear rate for metals is linear, and the oil is maintaining proper boundary lubrication, then it's still good oil.

Being wasteful with engine oil is less wasteful than the energy it takes to make a new engine

If one considers the oil to still be "good", then i can be re-used in other engines like mowers, atvs, ect. Its good oil so why not make it win-win?

At what point will 10k OCIs kill a 5.7 from lubrication issues? I haven't seen it yet.

Not saying it does. The 5.7 seems far more reliable than average, its a toyota. In general with my cars im just saying I’d rather be safer than sorry.

If it's correct for the application, I don't see why not. I've done it in my old snapper mowers when I performed a UOA and saw that the oil still had life. I never ran it too long in the mowers since they didn't have oil filters.

My new mower takes 20w50, as well as the hydros, so I just stocked up on alot of that. I keep some used oil on hand for sealing the deck on my trailer every year or two.

You're definitely right about that, Im sure it wont kill it, but the chances of oil consumption increases and once oil starts burning its only going to get worse not better, besides the engine issues it causes it also ruins the cats which as we all know from following this forum are not only crazy money but non existent right now. In the end, most of us on the forum probably take better care of out trucks than the majority of Tundra owners, we are a very small minority on here and obviously follow maintenance standards closer than most people. The fleet vehicles at work regularly go well past the recommended oci and something usually kills them long before the engine dies and those things sometimes run 16hrs a day without shutting off. Im obviously no expert, we all just have our own personal experiences and reasons for certain maintenance procedures we follow. I dont think someone changing their oil at 5k vs 10k is going to causes some type of oil shortage, nor do I think someone changing their oil at 10k vs 5k is going have an engine failure. Do what ever makes you feel good and enjoy the ride.

I tried to insinuate earlier that owners from different regions with different needs should consider different applications. For me , I regularly pull 6000+ lbs up 6-7 % grades that can stretch 9 miles long here in the Southern Rockies, at times with ambient temps over 90 deg, that motor is working it’s ass off , and that oil is getting about as hot as it can possibly get. The Ike Gauntlet on TFL’s YouTube page isn’t a stunt for me, it’s just normal travel. My trucks use will not mirror a daily commuter truck in flat land America, so for me I’m not waiting 10,000 miles for an oil change and run 5w30 oil during the months that the temp is 90-100 deg every day. Your mileage may very.

In thinking about your question, i assumed that guys comments about 5k oil being perfectly good oil wasted was a general comment about that video mechanic opinion. That guy could be wrong and that car in the video could be a total outlier. The mechanic could also be correct, which would make the 5k oil change not wasteful all in the long run.

ive watched that video before, it’s compelling, however I believe he mentions the owner took the car to the dealer for 10k oil changes. We have no way of knowing if the dealer was putting 10w-30 dino oil in and letting it run for 10k+ miles. I didn’t consider that initially.

We do a lot of short trips in the wife's Corolla and I push it pretty hard when I drive it. When I change the oil after ~5000 miles, it looks filthy (no, I haven't sent it to Blackstone for a real analysis). I've been gradually working the OCIs on that car down.

When the wife had the '11 LS460L....I tested it after 9k miles. Oil was in damn good shape.

but, that 4.6 is special. like, butter smooth special.

it has ~9Qts in it. We loved that car...almost as much as the '06 Sequoia.

I "recycle" mine by bringing it to the warehouse. we have an oil serve pick up all the oil we use in the forklifts & vehicles.

It gets "recycled" into the stuff they use at the dealerships.

I thought that in Canada yall just used maple syrup for oil? That might be why it gets dark so quickly.

I even found a cold pour test for it. Pretty impressive stuff.
