Bike Carry with CrewMax 5.5' & Tonneau

Have a 5.5' CM with the Bakflip MX4 tonneau on it. I was wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for c-channel bike holders? I would be fine with keeping the tailgate down + buying the bed extension. I found a couple on Amazon, but they aren't compatible with the tonneau since it required relocating the rails down a bit. If I can't find anything, I have a tailgate pad I could use, but would prefer to not need it since I hate taking it off/on all the time

I actually bought that and tried it. It won't work, the bracket won't reach down to the channel if it's been relocated like it with the BakFlip MX4.

I can’t remember where I saw it but on another thread I remember seeing a bike mounted transverse across the truck bed with a rail-to-fork attachment. Requires taking the front wheel off and having the front of the bike a little in the air to reach the side rail of the truck but seems reasonable?

Somewhat related, I don’t have my 5.5’ crewmax yet but I’m thinking of taking the plunge to get the bakflip over the cheap gator sfx tonneau purely due the the fact that the bakflip can securely lean against the cab and provide more room for bikes. I feel like even with a tailgate pad route, I’ll need the whole 5’ which I wouldn’t get with the gator, right?

 

On my short bed Tacoma I fold mine forward twice and with the tailgate down there's plenty of room for the bike to stand up. Or you could always get a tailgate protection cover and turn the bike around putting the front wheel and forks over the tailgate.

 

Finally getting back around to this. Does anyone know if the bed rails in the 2022 are the same as the bed rails in the earlier generations?

Had this on my Gen 2 - worked really well, picked it up on AMZ for $49 a few years back. Just pulled it off my Gen 2 today, haven't tried to install it on the Gen 3 yet but it looks like it will be just fine.

I'm using the rockymounts to haul my two mountain bikes and have had good luck so far. They installed into the factory tracks without issue. Great product. They can be found on Amazon or ordered direct, FWIW.

 

Hey ! Do you have any pics of it with bikes in the box ? I’m looking at alternative for when I tow travel trailer and bring bikes with me. I have a Thule XT2 rack but not Rv rated

 

Not the greatest picture, but I have two bikes on the rocky mounts and my daughters bike back there as well. 6.5' bed. The mounts work great. I have since taken them off because I installed a Retrax bed cover and purchased some rails and a bike mount. That wasn't a cheap date, but I needed the bed cover.

I run this setup now. I'm looking to put a cover on my truck. Probably the Bak rollup hard cover. I'm trying to figure out a way to have the fork mount bolted to the front of the bed so they can site above the cover. Then you just roll the cover up and the fork sits over the top of it. Still trying to figure out a mounting option...

 

I like this approach as well. My challenge is that taking the front wheels off the bikes is a challenge with the bolts and the disc brakes. The road bikes don't mind but the gravel bikes are a bit more work. I have the upright bike carriers so I decided that I would just mount it to the cover and remove the bike carrier when I need to lift the covers. I have the kayak racks already installed so the additional set of cross bars would be mounted closer together and only a few inches off the top of the cover. This way I can take the kayaks and then bikes on trips

This is what I did with the Ridgeline in the past. This is only a 5' bed so bikes fit pretty tight. The DB cover lets me bolt things to it with great holding capacity.

 

If you haven’t found a solution yet, you could check out RCI metalworks. We have a BakFlip, an RCI rack with bike mounts on the rack sides. You can even buy piece that will mount a tire between the bike frame and rack. Pretty slick set up.

 

I like a rack that would fit over my MX4, but I haven't been able to find a suitable one. I am eyeing the rack that fits over the propane tanks but I am worried about loading/unloading them. So, I may end up going with a rear trailer hitch. Still up for debate.

 

I guess I'm the only one who just throws his bike in the back with the tonneau down and shuts the tailgate.

 

I used to put the bikes in the back. The current bikes are too sensitive and will get damaged if they are stacked in the bed.

Once I stacked 4 bikes on the top of our little tent trailer. I found some holes in the top of the tent trailer from pedals rubbing on the fibreglass.

The current bikes are carbon fiber so they need a bit more care to move them around.

 

This is how I've done it since 2017.
Thule Xsporter rack (trimmed support legs, mouted to S-type bracket, which then goes under the tonneau frame, and mounts to the Tundra's rails inside the bed) with 4x Thule bike racks.
Had a soft roll up cover on the old truck. Worked great.

Transplanted it to the 2022, and since it came with the hard cover, made it work the same way (notched the cover's frame rails to mount the rack the same way as before). Obviously I can't open the hard cover much, but if need be - 2 bolts per support and the whole bike rack comes right off.
I also have a 2nd set of crossbars, which have ski racks mounted on them, so just before winter I simply remove the bike rack, and mount the ski rack.
