The Raptor for the sensible dad?
This is my biggest, and almost singular, complaint with Toyota. But it looks like the new Tundras actually have more room between curb and GVWR than their door jambs say. A few forum members have discovered up to 250lb extra by going to the CAT scales in their stock trucks.

IMO there are plenty of reasons and uses to go into 4-Lo when off-roading and you don't have to be stuck or need to turn on a locker to take advantage of it. I put my truck into 4-Lo when I'm offroad all the time for vehicle sympathy. Doesn't matter if it's a gravel road, rutted road, obstacle, incline or decline I put it into 4-Lo if I don't anticipate driving over 20mph. Putting a vehicle into 4-Lo gives you the best crawling ratio and lessens wheel spin. Remember traction is your friend and keeping that advantage 1) lessens strain on your drivetrain and suspension parts 2) lessens damage and harm to the trail. Too many people spin their wheels driving off-road that it creates larger ruts and cause damage to their trucks leaking diff fluid all over the trail. Your engine and transmission also work a lot less harder in 4-Lo which keeps temps down. It's also advantageous to be in 4-Lo low gear on a decline as you are using engine breaking and not burning out your brakes so quickly. The smell of burning brakes on a trail and knowing it's the only thing preventing you from rambling off a trail is not a good one.

I'm not an expert on the matter but I don't know that I've ever needed or been in a situation where 4Hi Locked would be needed. I suspect that would be best in a situation where you want wheel spin such as being stuck in the sand, high centered on snow/ice, or maybe stuck in a mud pit. IMO I think there are far more situations where a locked differential is needed in low range than needed in hi range which is what Toyota is betting on. Not to say that being able to be locked in hi range wouldn't be a nice tool to have if needed for the right situation.

    thanks.
Digitalwiz owns the '22 Tundra and owned an F150 prior. The numbers as you say are small between the two.
From his post it appears he noticed the difference and has not got used to it. I am not sure reason I asked.
Sometimes it is about more than the numbers.

    Good analogy.
In my situation I am always shifting on the fly into and out of 4wd. And I do get to speeds that are probably too fast for 4low 25 + mph..
I agree that a rear locker in 4 Low makes sense. It think its these videos where they are in 4hi and saying "do I need to use the rear locker -- lets see"

    fwiw -
I have not yet needed a rear locker.
I remember a conversation a couple years a go with a guy that was a longtime Toyota Dealership Mechanic and serviced the Tundras that were used as snow plows.
He told me snow plow guys get into all kinds of trouble when they disengage the A Trac and go it alone.
I am not snow plowing but I asked for best traction what to do.
He said just leave the A Trac on and you will never get stuck due to the ground clearance and the Open C rear Frame.
The Gen 2 Tundra rear tires will stay on the ground longer due to the articulation of the rear frame.

I emended when I went from my 21 pro to my 21 lariat. First drive in the f150 after flying in it took me 3 points to u-turn. I said “fuck.” But I got used to it as I drove it.

22 tundra is even worse and the 22 pro tundra is even worse than that lol

Thats a nice looking Ford, like all the color match

I liked when I test one, but the drivetrain was just too clunky for my tastes, otherwise I would likely be driving one

Buy a Lightning? It's an F150 without the clunky 10speed

Mine was a little clunky at first, but it has smoothed out considerably and seems to continue to get better as it learns.

I have no interest in that, way overpriced IMO and the range won't work for my vacations or boat towing.

I tested the powerboost and was blown away at the power, but it was pretty clunky and the transitions weren't refined between the modes.

it was a nice truck, but I liked the tundra better. That said, Im still holding off until they fix all this crap.

Mind me asking what you mean by it wasn't refined? I've owned two powerboosts, and both are much much more refined throughout the drivetrain after the 1000 mile transmission learning period. The I-Force Max is the one I would call " not refined" at this point.

If you're basing that on a test drive you should reconsider, there is a break-in/learning period.

I havent driven the hybrid tundra so I can't compare, I don't have any interest in that from toyota, you don't really gain anything for 3400 bucks and you lose the under seat storage which I want this time. The extra power doesn't really matter to me.

The ford on the other hand, I wouldn't buy a non powerboost, love all the stuff and on board generator, etc. Kinda funny how that works between the two, feels like ford did a much better job on the hybrid option.

What I mean is that it felt like the gas portion, hybrid portion, and transmission were not on the same page nearly enough. like one didnt know what the other was doing. I did note that it was a new truck and didnt have time to learn, but its what I had to go on when I tested them all. I didnt want to take that kinda chance for 70K at the time

it may come down to that at this point as I really thought toyota would have the issues worked out by now. Im waiting to see if they get the following bugs out for 2023.

    wind noise
rattling in rear window and bed
    window seals
    gas tank gauge malfunction
trucks dying or lag while accelerating from a stop, like merging into traffic

If they cant get it together I may go back to the Ford for another look, I liked it better than the GMC AT4 6.2 as the seats in that truck were a DEAL killer, awful.

My 21 v8 was clunky at 3k miles. It never learned like others had luck with. I have hills between my two spots and if I was coasting down no pedal input, as I would come to a stop it would jerk like I got hit in the back.

same thing if I de-accelerate while between shifts it would clunk hard. I’d love a powerboost platinum but my next f150 is the raptor and I sure hope it ain’t like my 21

Regardless of whether or not the locker is needed, I'd like to be able to engage it whenever I want. Winter parking lot shennanigans are better in 2wd with the diff locked. Same with dirt roads.

Forcing the locker in 4Lo only removes all the fun.

The lack of onboard wattage pisses me off with the Tundra/Sequoia hybrid. They trotted out the same weak 100W/400W inverter that debuted in the '05 Tacoma. Ford didn't F around, 2.5kW minimum, then a 4kW option, then a 7.2kW option for $700.

And you can get the 2Kw even without the hybrid. It was a $900 option on my Tremor.

was that bundled with the floor storage? For my 23 Raptor I had to add that shit for my rear seat foldable storage

No. Stand alone option. I didn't want the floor storage thing. Another big reason I went with the F-150 was the huge flat floor back there.

yeah the flat floor is nice. I was surprised that the tundra still had the hump. Hell even the full electric and hybrid F150 didn't have a hump.

Yeah, and it's very difficult to bump up to 2kW from 400W if you don't have the factory wiring , inverter, and alternator to cover it.
