    Hey folks,

Considering a move from the desert of New Mexico to the southern part of Alabama. This is really still a pipe dream of mine, but hoping to leave this state someday. Crime is out of control here.

My employer has an office in Mobile, but I would like to look at the Daphne/Fairhope area. What are some things you like/dislike about AL?!

I grew up in Southeast and Southwest NM. Your crime comment says you're in southeast. lol

You’ll be okay leaving the “Land of Entrapment” but there will be things you miss believe it or not.

Mobile is an “okay” city but I cant answer to living there as we are in Louisiana nearby. We do pass through there often when going to Florida of course or even when staying in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach right there in Alabama near Mobile. Lots of hunting, fishing (fresh water and salt), and mudding to do, if you’re that type. Camping galore and tons of beach condos to rent or things to do at the beaches. Thats the biggest draw for tourism, the beaches. Pensacola isn’t far away and there are often things going on there. Airshows at the Naval Air Station, concerts, etc. And better shopping and such also.

Hopefully we get a couple locals to chime in, like @Bakershack.
Being from NM myself I just wanted to chime in. Good luck with your escape, amigo.

This. There are several members from that area. I'm a little north of there in the Auburn area. The Fairhope, Daphne, Spanish Fort area is very nice.

Mobile itself has some crime issues, but not as bad as a lot of other parts of the country. Baldwin County (Daphne, Fairhope, Spanish Fort, etc.) is generally much nicer than Mobile, and is one of the fastest growing counties in the country, and is starting to have some growing pains from that. The Five Rivers Delta that has five rivers all emptying into the Mobile Bay is the most biologically diverse area of the country. Lots of camping, hunting, fishing (onshore and offshore) available.

The public schools here (Baldwin County) are not the greatest, but better than Mobile, and better than much of the rest of Alabama. That said, we still have students that go on to be very successful educationally and professionally (Tim Cook of Apple is from Baldwin County). If the student has parent involvement, they will succeed academically regardless of the schools.

Sports is VERY big around here. A LOT of local students go on to have success in college and pro sports.

If you like beaches, we have them. Fear of hurricanes drives a lot of people away, but if you are wise about choosing where your house is, and prepare yourself, it's really not that bad. A big one hits the Mobile area, on average, about every 20 years. But we always pay attention them just to stay ready.

The only thing I really don't like is the humidity. In June, July, August, and early September, you can just about get your daily intake of water by just breathing. That kind of hot, humid air hits you in the face when you walk out of an air conditioned building. The only way you get used to it is if you've never known anything else. My kids grew up down here, but they both want to live where there are four seasons, including a snowy winter. There ARE fours seasons here, but fall is just a bit of summer with less humidity, winter is short and very mild compared to more northern places, and spring only lasts a few weeks before it gets hot.

Overall, I really like living down here. The people are pretty friendly, if they are locals. Most people who move here from other places don't seem to be as friendly. I don't get it - not being friendly.

I could try to go on, but I have to go to work. Ask me something specific if I haven't covered it.

I really enjoyed the people in Baldwin Co. The friendly attitude is contagious it seems. Most of my time was spent south of Foley closer to the water.

I live in Tuscaloosa County. Just a short drive to the beach, Great Smokey Mtns, Atlanta, or New Orleans.

Baldwin County is great, I would live there in a a heartbeat.

Thanks for all the replies fellas, really appreciate the info!

@Bakershack - I am in the consulting business for IT software developers. Although my company has an office in Mobile, I am 100% remote.

We’re in Albuquerque. Even though we live in a nice neighborhood I don’t see things getting any better unfortunately.

Kind of random question but anyone know anything about Central Christian School in Robertsdale? They’ve got great reviews, but it’s always nice knowing someone with personal experience

Make it Montgomery and you’ve got a deal.

I was born and raised in St. Tammany Parish. Sister lived in Shreveport for 25+ years. Despite our rivalries in collegiate athletics I got a lot of love for the boot. Always a ton of y’all when I’m down in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.

I know a few families with their kids there. I hear that it's a good school but I have no personal experience.

Awesome to hear nonetheless. The family and I are going to that area for vacation in the fall so it’ll be my first chance to check it out.

How far south will you be going? I settle in at Ft. Morgan Oct 1st for 7 months. That's waaaaay south then go 10 miles west of Gulf Shores.

I think we are planning on visiting gulf shores and orange beach specifically for the beaches. Although we may stay more north just depending on what AirBNBs are available and pricing.

    As an Alabamian…
    This covers it pretty well.

My wife’s fam is from the Fairhope area.
    Great place.
    We’re just outside of Birmingham.
If you go a little further north, I can give you a good breakdown as well.

Mobile has it spots, but it still nice.

    Humidity is what it is.
At least you know you’re sweating.

Yes, we have cottonmouth water moccasins and copperheads (pretty common), a few different flavors of rattlesnakes (seen less often), and coral snakes (rare) of the venomous types, and a whole bunch of nonvenomous types including garter, rat, banded water snake, hognose, indigos, black racers, kings and a few others. You just learn where to expect them and keep your eyes, ears, and nose open. I grew up spending a lot of time in the woods and learned how to deal with all of them, so they don't bother me.

    Yep.
Water moccasins are fairly territorial and can be ornery.
The others avoid humans as much as possible, but they’re around.
