Hello I just bought my third first gen.... It won't go into park, how much of a pain is this to fix. I have multiple trucks to get parts from. Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

Let us know what tricks you already tried so we're not sitting here plugging at crap you've already tried. There are a few threads around here of broken collar on the column, preventing shifting. Cable bind is another.

So haven't tried anything as of yet. Still have to go pick the truck up, bought it yesterday. The guy did say it was a binding cable, so I assume replacement is the option. It also has the notorious leaking rack so that's a separate issue to tackle as well as a leak in the weld on diff cover.... But books for about 6k more than I payed so can't complain.

Sorry, I read that as "have tried multiple tricks". Reading comprehension fail for me.

What year is it? Fortunately, you can at least start it while in neutral, so ...

When you get it, check the tail light fuse and the brake light switch at the pedal. Yes, I know that sounds stupid, but more than one generation of Tundra required the brake light switch to be plunging properly, and tail lights circuit to be OK before it let you shift the trans into/out of park. More info.

Of course, look to see if anything is binding cable-wise under the truck, with e-Brake on, of course, and also at the lever with the column plastics off.

Check this reply, since this issue has popped up a couple of times from others, and look at issues with broken levers if the above gets you no joy. For the first thread I linked in that reply, check @Jack McCarthy 's reply # 14 for how he fixed. But one of the two threads should hopefully help you out.

Some details on the column, parking lock, disassembly/reassembly from the FSM can be found in replies under this thread.

90% positive one of what I've offered will help. If it does, please reply back so others can benefit from your experience.

I most definitely will let you know what the solution ends up being. He did say he'd had to add a spring under the truck before because it's done this prior. It's a 2004 with the 4.7. but he assumed it bound up from sitting.

If you're in the rust belt, or the truck is from the rust belt, I can see things getting bound up if sitting for months after constant driving in the salt.

Thing is, there's two common problems. If it's solely a matter of getting in/out of park, that often links back to the brake system, either lights, fuses, or pedal switch. If it's a matter of getting into all gears, or more than one gear, there's a litany of other possible issues, like stuck linkage, active or looming failure of the shifter arm, etc.

I think I recall seeing a video on YouTube showing how to manually shift the trans into gear from under the truck. I don't have time to check ATM, stuck working...

The lever goes into the park position, however it remains in reverse. But everything else seems to be where it's supposed to be..as in I put it in neutral position and that's neutral, same with drive and reverse... So it's odd to me.

Diff cover weld rusted through? Binding shifter cable? Got a smoking deal on the truck? This screams frame rot to me. Hope you had a chance to thoroughly inspect before your purchase. Would seem to me that if the other gear positions are working as they are supposed to, then the issue may not be the cable, but perhaps the shift / brake interlock or the collar in the column that gets a little sloppy. Mine has lots of play in it for sure.

Not completely inspected... The first tundra I bought had the frame replacement done. That IS a option ,not one I would like to do tho... It is currently inspected in NYS so that hopefully means something. Lol. Registration was out last year. He has a 06 he drives, and bought this one for $3600 a little over a year ago. Wasn't doing anything with it... I swung in and asked about it and he said he didn't want to bother with the things it needed. He's a older guy but apparently a lot of ppl in his family drive tundras. He works on them. Hopefully it's fine underneath. I'll know for sure when I go to get it and strap it down.

So I called Toyota and had them run the vin.... It apparently had a frame "remediation" about 12 years ago... Not sure if that's a good thing or not thought. Had a previous company truck, a 03 , that ALSO had a remediation and that one rotted to shit at the sway bar mount location.

Remediation means one of two things: They sprayed a coating over the rust, which didn't stop the rust, just stopped you from seeing it, as it continued to rust away. Or they replaced the frame. I'm thinking it was the former, not the latter.

Sucks, I see it has the OEM tow package provisions. I'm sure it was nicely optioned. Hopefully you didn't pay more than $3k-4k for it. You can probably get that back out of it selling in pieces if the rest is in nice shape.

Payed $1500 for it and it's definitely a bargain. And yes it had the coating not the replacement... Cheap, ineffective "fix" for Toyota....and some plugs of some sort were apparently put in... I think if there IS a issue with the frame, I'll break out my welder and get to work on it. I do have a newer frame as stated, just not sure I want to get into all of that.

So I got the truck yesterday, frame is flaky but appears to be solid. Lost a rear brake line due to a stick in the road but aside from that....as stated needs the rack replaced, exhaust fixed, rear end replaced or new "cover" welded on.... Has a trans line leak under the front skid plate. And the shift linkage issue... Other than that, seems to be a solid truck

What’d you do to resolve the parking issue? You can pop the steering column cover plates to see everything underneath. Screws are accessible by rotating the steering wheel 90 degrees in each direction to see them behind the wheel.

So as of yet I haven't done anything. Got it home, threw a block in the driveway and backed up to it, left it there. I broke my back a month ago so not yet completely ready to crawl under it. I did get my work truck back as well yesterday, another tundra, so at least I have that until I manage to get this one straightened out

First thing to do from my view is to throw a brick on the brake pedal and make sure it's (a) making the brake lights light up, and (b) all brake lights are functioning. If not, replace one.

Then go onto the more in-depth stuff.

I re-purposed my old steering wheel lock for that task.
