So my new-ish neighbours just bought themselves a new 22 foot motorhome.

Here's the part I don't understand: they have a diesel 2500. So why not buy a 22' travel trailer or fifth wheel? Surely that truck could handle it.

It also doesn't look like they tow a car with their motorhome so they have no mobility when camping without breaking down their site.

I don't get it but different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

A 22’ motor home is easy to travel in. If you are looking to see the county and move a lot, a 22’ motor home drives, parks and goes places that most full size trucks will. Sure you can’t set up camp because you always need to unhook and move out but when moving you are very free.
I met a friend of mine at Yellowstone a few years ago. I was pulling my travel trailer and he had a 22’ motor home. we would leave camp to explore the park for the day. We packed a lunch and loaded all our stuff in the tundra and off we went. They disconnected and drove off. We parked in the same parking lots, drove the same places and did the same things. However they had a bathroom, a complete kitchen, all of their clothing, towels etc. and a place to nap with them the entire day. We borrowed all their stuff…..
I got 8mpg towing my trailer an he got 10 traveling to and from Yellowstone.
Campers camp better. Motor homes travel better especially if you are not towing a dingy.

Ah, the pluses and minuses of motorhome vs travel trailer.

I was wondering why it spends most of its time parked in front of the driveway!

    Too many, but not enough....
Same rationale my dad has. He says the fun of traveling together is when everyone is in the vehicle together screaming at each other. Not separated with a driver in a truck. Plus he doesn't like the mechanics and processes of hitching and backing up.

As a younger man and car guy, I don't mind the mechanics and I already have a truck. Plus why pay for an engine that sits 90% of the time. Plus what if you wanna go offroading or to the store, it's a pain to take the whole rv. Not to mention the fact that a travel trailer is way cheaper.

If you're towing a travel trailer, I hope everyone is in the truck together (though hopefully not screaming at each other)...

You hit on a point I forgot to mention: twice as many powertrains to maintain.

And what's worse than an engine that sits all the time. Begging for problems.

Don’t you need something to tow the RV home when it breaks down? o_O

    Enjoy spending money I guess.

I mean yes - I would reasonably say unless you had plans on downsizing vehicles in the near future - a travel trailer makes more sense.

To each their own I guess - motor homes certainly depreciate as much if not more than travel trailers. If anything it’s easier to sell a travel trailer as there are always more people who want to spend less (or have less to spend on their loan approval).

Guessing the salesman made them think they were making the “smart” move and told them they were all out of travel trailers to 2024 and they had this last motor home on hand to sell today.
