Stupid, crazy idea, sell or keep my first gen

As the title says. It’s either a stupid, crazy or both idea. I’m looking for a manual again. I drove a Jeep Wrangler for a couple years that was a manual and I miss a manual too much to ignore anymore. So what about selling my truck for a manual? I was debating between a first gen Tundra as I have now or a Ford Ranger.

I currently have a 2002 Tundra access cab that is a V8, 4WD with very minimal frame rust. But I would be looking for a manual access cab in 4WD that I can switch my topper over to. But unfortunately I would be giving up my V8 power that I love. So I’m looking for advice in convincing me to keep my truck or sell it. But I’d only sell if I got a full trade in and didn’t have to pay any extra. I love my truck but I know I’d love a manual even more.

What differences would there be between the V6 and V8 and towing?

    Too many, but not enough....
I say get a manual. I had an 02 4.0 ranger FX4 twin sticks for over 10 years and it was so much fun to drive. If you get a ranger try to find an FX4 model. You get the 4.0, 4.10 gears, aluminum rims and fully loaded. The 3.0 is a close contender, it is easier to work on and the mileage is better, but the power is noticeably less. My biggest regret getting the tundra is the auto tranny. The early 2000's model rangers were bulletproof, i didnt have any problems with mine until the original clutch went out at 295k miles, which I chose not to fix because I figured the engine would go soon after I fixed the clutch and I needed a bigger vehicle for my growing family anyway. Of course if you can get a tundra with a manual that would be ideal, but it is probably much more expensive than a comparable ranger.

I wouldn’t do it. And I love manual. Buy a small gas efficient manual car to get you through this time. Zip around, don’t worry about gas, keep you’re most-excellent truck for truck stuff, and for when you get that shifting phase under control. A V6 as small as a Tundra won’t be nearly what you need, towing much.

Wait, help me understand the ask here, since the last sentence of your first paragraph reads a little awkward to me.

You currently have a 1GT, auto, V8. Are you debating the option to add a vehicle, and it'll either be another 1GT manual [or] a Ranger manual? Or are you looking to get a Ranger manual, and relinquish your 1GT?

    I'll take your cap :D

EDIT: I should say, I love a manual too, but I'd prefer to have a smaller, secondary manual to drive.

I’d be looking at replacing my current 1GT. I don’t have the ability to have two vehicles right now. But I would love a manual 1GT or Ranger. I was also wanting to know if there was a difference on towing between the V6 Tundra and V8.

Sorry I just phrase stuff weird sometimes.

Look on the bright side, at least you don't do it using 100x more words like me.

I can't speak to the V6 & towing. I don't know many people that buy a V6 when they know they'll be towing. The price difference off-the-lot for the V8 vs. V8 was negligible enough, as was the MPG, that unless 5-10% more car payment would absolutely break the budget, they just went V8. The one sizeable perk of the V6 was the manual option, for those who needed/wanted it. (EDIT: And maybe having the non-interference engine, I suppose)

I prefer driving manual, but my first vehicle, which was a truck, was also a 2WD manual 4cyl. I learned how to drive manual on tractors while I was still single-digits in age. I'm pretty fond of it, honestly, but there's virtually no benefit to it in the the new computer-controlled engines of the post-OBDI days. Computers are more efficient at shifting for better MPG than humans. The only possible benefit may be more granual shifting control in tight situations, or for rocking yourself out of being stuck.

I love a manual for the control. I love controlling everything my vehicle does as well as knowing it inside and out. I straight up abused that poor Jeep I owned lol. It’s just so much fun for me to control it and it drives how I like it to drive. So I’ve been wanting another manual because an auto just doesn’t scratch that itch I have lol. I’ve driven my friends new xterra that happens to be a manual and I loved every second of it.

There will definitely be a difference anytime you go from a V8 to a V6. If you are dead set on going to manual I would look for an 05-06 so you can at least get the bigger V6. Those are really rare at this point though.

Personally, I would never want to go down in engine size. If you want a crazy project you could always convert your V8 to a manual. It's not easy but it has been done.

Check this post for more info.

Understand the need for the manual. My manual car is a third gen Mazda Miata. 6 speeds of pure joy and a blast to drive. An adult go cart. Smaller car, but unlike the corvette, you can really have fun at normal speeds and when you put the top down even more fun. And it will easily double your gas mileage. They're easy to work on and have tons of aftermarket parts for easy modifications.

Preaching to the choir! Believe me, I get it. The difference between auto vs manual could probably be equated to elevator music vs. rock n roll... One is definitely far more engaging and immersive, requires using more of your 6 senses.

I always thought about doing the Miata thing, ever since Stacey David did his v8 swap into one on the Gearz TV show 15-something years ago. At that time, in ATL proper at least, primarily gay men drove them, and driving one was seen as 'open admission' and could draw unwanted attention. About 6-8 years ago, Jeeps took that crown for that crowd. Maybe I need to start re-thinking the Miata. I bet a 6.0 GenIII SBC would be awesome in one of those...

I had a 2000 2 door long bed 2 wheel drive first gen V6 manual that I loved. It was plenty powerful 100% stock. That said, I'd stick with the truck you know.

I know my truck very well and pay attention to the little quirks. I love it so much. So I am inclined to keep it because a manual truck would be a bit under what I want like the v8 or towing capacity. I don’t tow much as is, but I do have plans to get a camper in the future.

Good bit out of my price range. As nice as it is I was wanting to stick to an older vehicle around the same price as my current Tundra. And I was wanting to stick to a half ton.

I have after talking to my dad came to a decision. I’ll keep my truck. I love it too much to get rid off. No matter how much I’d love a manual. So in the future when I’m able to get a second car I’ll get a small car in a manual. I just don’t like the loss of power and towing capacity to going to a manual would bring. Unless I went with a truck I wouldn’t really care for like a Dodge 1500 or Ford F-150. I wouldn’t mind a Ford Ranger or Tacoma, but they lose the power and capacity I want to keep for the future.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It did help me to make up my mind on this. So I’m keeping my first gen Tundra! I’ll just drive my friends car when I want to drive a manual lol

I see a custom, 1 of kind 1st gen v8 manual tranny tundra in your future. To accomplish this you will need a Manuel for your manual. A Pedro will not suffice, Mexican vs Mexicant

Wonder if the trans from a 4.0 Tacoma or tundra would work in this application.

as much as I get the Manual obsession, I have to admit getting in the tundra and just driving is nice. My cummins and tdi Jetta both are hand shakers. The cummins pulls tow duties, and the Jetta is the daily. I don’t think you made a bad decision keeping the tundra

I've got an R150F from a 98 Tacoma that had the 3.4L. They make an adapter to bolt it up to the 2UZ. I might have a 2UZ/R150F Tacoma or 4Runner in my future. (Wheels are turning)
