I just searched an hour for answers to this annoying problem and didn't find an answer. My 2006 Tundra with 160k miles has a slight popping sound coming from the rear when i come to a stop. It remind me of sounds my 61 chevy had years ago when the u joints were worn out. But on the Tundra it not noticeable when shifting the gears back and forth while not moving. I only notice the noise when I come to a stop applying the brakes. I just bought the truck and I have the records. It was service at the Toyota dealership every 5k since new. The front brakes were repadded and resurfaced 40k ago. There is never any mention of the rear brakes in the service records. Could rear brakes be the problem? Do the Tundras have wear indicators built into the pads?

2 wheel. I just bought the truck one month ago. I went to the Toyota dealer and got all service records, They show this every 5k since it was new.

Could be the u joints or just the one closest to the rear end. Also The 5 speed transmission in these trucks can from time to time have a bump/jerk sensation when you come to a stop or when letting off the gas from a stop. Or is it just noise related?

If your sure it’s coming from the rear. You could also jack the rear up and check the wheel bearings.

Your 2wd 2006 Tundra may suffer from missing transmission bracket bolts. Strangely, only the 2wd and NOT 4wd suffered from this. Should be 4 bolts. I posted up a pic in another thread last week or two and don’t have time to find it.

2wd plus 2006 missing bolts on trans bracket. Clunk sound fixed... but popping sound?

You’ve drum rear brakes. The noise you describe is typical of the shoes moving against a dry and rusty backing plate. Those contact points on the backing plate are supposed to be clean and lightly lubricated with a high temperature grease, but rarely are. This is not done as part of a typical lube job or inspection.

This could be the problem. When sitting still, motor running I can switch back and forth drive to reverse and there is no noise. Its when I come to a compete stop depressing the brakes is when i hear the noise. And the noise is a fraction of a second after complete stop as if its a brake shoe or caliper settling against the plate. I will check this out when I have another person to help around. Thanks, foxtrapper

Thank you PHM This was my problem. Two of the four bolts were missing and the other two were loose enough they would have fallen out eventually. After I tightened the two bolts the noise completely stopped. I now have two bolts and will tighten all four with blue loctite. I should have listened to you two years ago and avoided the annoying sound. I remember crawling under the truck back then and looking. The four bolts are concealed inside the crossmember. and can only be seen from directly underneath the crossmember through four small holes in the crossmember. Not having a lift or ramps i missed them.
