Thanks - I'm at this "It is what it is" point. I'm thinking we are gonna need to replace the air handler also. The old unit is a 13 Seer and it sounds like the quickest unit we can get is a 16. The AC guy was going to look at the specs of the Air Handler, said something about some kind of port and if it has that, we are good but from what I'm reading I think we are screwed. The biggest issue is that the air handler is up on the third floor. To get to the third floor, you have to go up a metal spiral staircase. I'm assuming they come in pieces and I'll help carry the shit up, but damn.

Anyways, I'm fortunate to have what I am and I should just be happy that I have it even if it doesn't work. So many people have less.

Pretty strange to say, but it's a nice 71 degrees here in Oxnard (Ventura County), California. Typically is warmer than this during time.

So usually lower seer or older units have a piston orifice at the air handler(evap) and it has to match with the condensing unit, most higher seer units use a TXV. So you can’t mix the two…….
The air handlers come assembled, but I’ve definitely had to strip many units down to get thru small attic access holes…….
If your there helping him, I’m sure he’s more than appreciative, it can really suck working alone sometimes, even just asking him “hey are you doing ok, need some water” is a huge plus!

Here is the 16 SEER we got. Does the job for our 2200 sq ft home.

Other than a pad on a pad, looks clean. I would paint the black insulation with a roof coating or they sell a armaflex paint that’s white, the black stuff will be gone in a year or so from the sun.

Well, we decided to have the Compressor replaced rather than changing out the unit. It was a few thousand cheaper and immediate, rather than a few thousand more and waiting until next week. We most likely would have had to change out the air handler up in the attic too so a few thousand on top of that.

It had a pound of extra refrigerant in it so that may have contributed to it failing early. As of right now, knock on wood, it’s cooling faster and better than it ever had. I guess it could be my imagination though.
