My ex asked me to change the thermostat in her Chevy Cruze. Check engine light came on and went off on it's own but Auto Zone and someone else said thermostat was bad. It was not overheating and coolant was fine so I questioned it but her car and her money. GM OEM part made out of cheap plastic. Aftermarket part was all metal. Luckily the coolant pushed all of the chunks out of the heater hose.

After many years of focusing on MPG's, I finally bought my first truck in 2006. I had really liked the GMC trucks for a long time but was very disappointed in the quality and reliability of later models (based on my research) at the time. And the unofficial name change from General Motors to Government Motors gave me absolutely ZERO confidence that they would improve. Over the years, I have liked the looks of the GMC trucks, but reliability continues to drop "like a rock." Your experience does not surprise me in the least.

While we're bashing GM, why can't they figure out how to keep a driver's side fog light operational? We had a 99 Grand Prix (bought new) that popped the ds fog on a regular 6 month basis. Pass side was fine. You see a newer model car/truck driving around with a ds fog not working, 99.75/100 times it's a GM.

Prior to Toyota we were driving Jeeps/Dodges - had a couple of those went 10 years and never replaced a bulb. If Jeep/Dodge can figure out how to make something last, anyone should be able to do it!

The headlights on the Sierra/Silverado were bad from about 1999 until 2013 and it was always the driver's side that would go because there was more crap in the way on that side to replace it. Not sure if the newer ones still burn out as much.

Just about any manufacturer has produced a “dog” or 2 - while price can sometimes be a warning sign - GM seems to get worse the higher the price point at times.

Cruze and problem are synonymous - I mean it’s basically the successor to the Cavalier/Cobalt and while you can certainly get lucky and find a nice reliable vehicle - odds are just as good you get a dog.

Yea - their parts are junk - but again - it happens to every maker.

Personally, I’d never spend the money any big 3 manufacturer commands for a truck right now before shopping used. If I had to buy a “new” truck - I’d probably limit it to a a Ram Big Horn - not out of any real like of the quality - rather just a price/feature decision. I’d also say to ably not buy a Tundra though too - not a ‘22 and unless I could find a ‘20-21 Limited or better with 4wd priced under the mid to low 40s - I probably wouldn’t buy a Tundra period as just too much $$ for what your getting.

At a point - I think your better off buying something 15-25 years old and saving the $$. Again - it comes down to need/use. If I drove 100 miles a day - then newer makes sense - but at the same time if I drove 100 miles a day - does a full size truck really make sense for me.

FWIW, my brother has a Cruze with 220,000 miles, brakes, oil changes and tires. Few other miscellaneous items, that's it.

I have a buddy that ran over 300k on a Cobalt. I think it only made it cause he enjoys working on his own cars and he figured GM would put him in a commercial if he could get it past 500k. But then a deer crossed the road and that was that.

My wife had an Acadia that was a constant maintenance queen the entire period we owned it, and she insisted on a new Enclave to replace it with in 2016 saying all the bugs would be worked out on them… I of course assumed the same and we rolled the dice on a model year closeout deal on one in late ‘16.
5 or so years and 200k miles later and we have replaced traction control sensors/modules, torque converter, then eventually entire transmission rebuild, oil pan and valve cover gaskets, a bunch of plastic garbage, etc. And all out of warranty, of course. GM designs shit to last the bare minimum of time. Meanwhile, Japan and some others have million mile tear-downs that still pass factory tolerances on rings and bearings and other things.
Needless to say, she now wants a Sequoia. I am on the hunt, including for a Solar Octane TRD Pro (a his and hers!?) even though she swears she wants another trim and color.

    Nailed it. Or her.

I didn't get married until I hit 40 so I have an ex or two and 90% of em wouldn't call me to do anything because they'd know the answer. The other 10% know that if they called it would only be for one thing (not to work on their car)

Is a Consumer Reports subscription still like 5 bucks a year? It was always fun to watch GM ignore problems year after year.

I had a 2007 silverado extended cab 4x4 with the 5.3. And it was great. Traded it with close to 200k miles. Replaced a fuel pump and a valve spring and had 1 recall on the AC system. Too bad they can't make them like that anymore. It was ugly tho.

An ex-friend of mine continually bashed my 2010 Toyota Tacoma, which was a gift from my dad in 2009 when I got my learner's permit. Nearly 13 years and over 155K miles later, it has gotten a new frame courtesy of Toyota but has never had any mechanical problems. It is currently at that age/mileage where things just wear out (I just had a steering U-joint replaced today), but it just refuses to die. All I do is change the oil every 5,000 miles and keep up with basic maintenance. My truck was a gift so I've never had payments on it, and I am presently saving up to buy a house.

My friend, on the other hand, is driving a 2016 Chevy Sonic that had like 95K miles on it when I last talked to her and was basically falling apart. This is not entirely GM's fault, as she is (A) chronically broke and almost entirely supported by her dad and (B) not good about performing basic maintenance. I last talked to her in September 2021, at which time she owed four grand on the loan, and she could tell just by driving the car that the timing belt was about to give out. I was like "well, why don't you replace the damn thing?" Her excuse was that she couldn't afford it...

Her dad has all but disowned her and only makes payments on the car because he cosigned and it affects his credit if a payment is missed. The Sonic was a former rental car purchased at one of those Hertz Car Sales places, and she texted me from the car lot asking me what car she should get. They had a Corolla on the lot, and I of course told her to get the Corolla. Her dad thought the Corolla was too expensive and was only willing to put so much of his money into a car, so she got stuck with the Cruze.

She once let the insurance on the car lapse, either because she couldn't afford it or just out of pure laziness. When a vehicle is financed, the bank the generally requires it to have comprehensive insurance with a maximum deductible of $500. When the insurance lapsed, the bank sent out the repo man. The car was registered here in the Philly suburbs, but my friend lived up in the mountains. I'm thinking the car might have had some sort of tracking device on it put there by the finance company, but a mutual friend believed that her dad ratted her out to the finance company. The repo man showed up and towed the Sonic right out of her roommate's driveway. Her dad ended up paying a small fortune to get the car back, and as of late 2021 she still had that poor car.

My friend was delusional, having champagne tastes but a flat beer budget...

She found a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Cummins diesel for sale at a dealer not too far from us a few years ago. The truck was in excellent condition and reasonably priced (though she couldn't afford to pay cash for it, and this was sometime between 2019 and 2021), but it had like 100K miles and it was a 2WD (People don't buy heavy-duty 2WD pickups in Southeast PA, so that's why it was so cheap). 100K miles on a well-maintained Cummins is chump change, but for what she planned on using the truck for, not having 4WD was a bad idea. I pointed out that it did not have 4WD, and she's like "oh, it can be converted"... o_O

Yes, it technically can be converted, but for what it would cost to buy the truck, buy the parts necessary to convert it to 4x4, and pay someone to do the conversion, it would be much more cost effective to just buy a similar truck with 4WD. She did not seem to comprehend this.

This girl is obsessed with horses, which is why she wanted a truck. Her parents bought her a horse when she like 12, and she had this horse until less than a decade ago. When she was in high school and her parents paid the bills, this was fine. However, her parents gave her horse to nonprofit youth program when they got sick of paying the bills and realized she couldn't afford the expenses of equine ownership by herself. So, she went out and adopted a horse...

She had a job that paid well, but all of her money went towards rent on a shitty apartment and that damn horse! She was driving a shitty 2004 Nissan Altima at the time that she'd bought used and only recently paid off (this was 2015-2016), and she wanted a truck to pull a horse trailer. I indulged her fantasies and of course recommended a Tundra, even though I knew she couldn't afford even a rustbucket Tundra with over 200K miles...

Her response was that Toyotas can't tow shit, and this made me mad. A Tundra is not a heavy-duty truck, but it can still pull a respectable amount in my opinion. As stated above, I haven't talked to this woman in almost a year, and I'd be surprised if that Sonic didn't snap its timing belt and become a very expensive boat anchor...
