One of the many awesome things about Colorado is the mountain passes. Great views and even better opportunities for tow testing. This might be a long shot..but what the hell.

What I am looking for is a new stock (no lift, stock size tires) 3rd Gen & 2nd Gen that wants to show it off and have some fun. Yes I could go into a dealership to test drive a 3rd Gen (and I’ve owed a 2nd Gen) but towing with one is probably out of the question.

    Needed:

    - 2nd & 3rd Gen Tundra trucks. (Thank you Capt. Obvious)
    - Trailer of some sort. In a perfect world I would prefer a flatbed trailer with a 10k rating. I do have a LDH if needed. This way we can put 7-8k on the trailer and tow comfortably. I do have a good friend with a 10K rated trailer, but after 22 years in SF duty as one of our nations finest, he is spending some down time in Alaska for a few months. He isn’t due back until September. Might be able to get it sooner but I would like to do this in August sometime.

What I would like to do:

    - Test out the towing differences between the two generation trucks on some passes. Test how these trucks compare on grades.

    - We need to stay legal. Towing at rated speed limits and weight ratings is required. I’m sure some trucks can pull grades at or above the rated speed limits but that’s not what I would like to test.

    - Central location where people can meet up. I-70W leaving Denver up Floyd Hill is a pretty good tow testing grounds. We can definitely try someplace else too.

As an added bonus, the members in this test can also try out my LML Duramax on the same testing grounds. I can bring a GN trailer, but towing with the same trailer would be a better comparison IMO.

If you would like to join this test…post up or PM me.

Anyone? I'm a little shocked at this...and bummed at the same time.

This is my final offer...I will include a box of girl scout thin mint cookies. No negotiation...I know what these are worth.

Thin mints... not bad. Somoas? Now that would be tempting... And just so you know, I'm pretty sure the back of the box says Serving Size: One Box. Or at least, that's what mine say after the sharpie mod. Cuz we're all about mods around here.

I have organized a couple tow tests before. It was rather fun and learned a lot about other possible tow rigs.

I retire in 2 years and need a little somethin somethin for fun travel/off-road adventures. A Platinum trim hybrid just might be the ticket or a Pro.

Ditto to both these unless anyone is interested in coming up this way. Camp in Banff and tow a few trailers over the continental divide?

I'll have my truck in the Durango and Telluride areas for about 10 days middle of August. I'm not hauling the RV though. Mesa to the top of Grand Mesa would be a hell of a test. I know cuz I've ridden up it on a bicycle.

I'd be willing to hook it up though no more than 7k. It would probably take about ten gallons of gas to do that run, lol. Do I need a scan gauge?

What would we be measuring exactly?

I would like to see how a 3rd Gen handles passing with loads, braking, handling, ride, etc. Call it an extended test drive. Does the truck work or work the driver? Nothing worse than towing 4-6 hours and arriving totally exhausted.

Comfort is high on the list. My GM interior is pretty comfortable and always arrive relaxed.

I was really impressed with the ride/steering/handling/power of the DC 3rd gen that I drove. I'm a little surprised though reading posts about them needing suspension mods to handle loads similar to what I tow w/o sagging. It's similar to concerns about the F150 suspension I've read on the Grand Design TT forums. I'd love to tow with one or even just ride in one towing to see how much the towing experience is improved. I'm sure the power is great but I haven't really felt the need yet for increased power when towing. But I haven't really challenged it much either.

It’s a long way from southern TX, but if you wanna come up…more than welcome to. :hattip:I haven’t got to beat on a 1st Gen in a while. It took it all and asked for more.

I think (my own opinion here) a solid tow test is not charging up and down a mountain. Braking, brisk lane changes, slower towing, etc is a better tow test. The slow speed towing on grades (like a mountain road to the cabin) is a tow test. No speed for cooling, no momentum, tight turns, and long/hard braking.

I agree, a proper test needs to cover a better variety of conditions and scenarios.

Agreed. This is why I’d like to see a 3rd in those scenarios.

We all know a 4.6L v8 from 2010 with transmission cooler would dominate the test.

@ColoradoTJ did you ever get anyone to bite on this? If you have had a chance to tow with a 3rd gen I’d love to hear your opinion.

I’m very surprised no one took you up on that. I personally don’t know anyone myself who owns one either. I’m really interested in real world reviews but not from just anyone I want to hear from people who have towed a lot in their day.

Same here. If the 3rd Gen pulls like the Ford EB, it's a winner in my book. I have towed 7000 lbs with one of those 2016 F150 Sport and was pretty impressed. There was a few things I didn't like.

Yeah I think the tundra looks impressive on paper but you never know til you get behind the wheel. Have you had any experience with the 3.0 duramax? The fuel economy in those is impressive.

I did drive a buddies ZR2 and took it off-road. I liked it, but not sure how it would be as a puller.
