To your first point. I dont know. They looked at it with a bore scope. I think the piston is up as he seemed to not be sure what the cylinder looked like and said he wouldnt know what the extent of the damage would be until they took it apart. And that he didn't think that would be worth the effort. I think he sees enough damage to figure it's not gonna be good findings.
To the second point. I appreciate your opinion and I agree with all of it. But I do have a fairly cheap mechanic who thinks it's worth a look. Plans to pull the plug as soon as hes sure the engine isn't worth rebuilding. As far as reman and salvage. You are right about the salvage. If I was in the US I think I could find a good salvage. In canada I'm not finding much so far. But I am still looking. Appreciate the help.

So as an update. Engine been pulled and one cylinder head is shot. One piston seems to have fractured into several pieces and was lodged in the top of the cylinder. Cylinder is fairly badly scoured. Mech suggests not rebuilding but it is an option. But as mentioned above would require boring all cylinders as doing 1 isnt a great idea. He has found a salvage that sounds promising. 85k miles (135k km) Should be under 6k for the engine (Canadian $) and another few grand total after tows, initial mech inspection, swap, fluids ect. Evidently this should be a somewhat safe bet as most mechanics think these engines are pretty bulletproof. So I think that's the route I'll be taking. Reman would be optimal but another 4k. Just too much $.

    LOL hey I understand it.
My dad's 2014 has 38000 on it, or about 6333 miles on it a year. That includes a 5000 mile camping trip to NOLA. So really he has roughly 33000 on it.
It is daily driven--he drives to work 4 miles away.
Mine will be about the same. My wife will drive it most of the time due to gas--I have a corolla hybrid I use.
She drives 3.5 miles, I drive about 13.

I daily my truck but my commute is about 5 miles (9 km) and I try to drive my wife's Corolla everywhere else so I'm currently on track to put about 6000 km on my truck each year. That will obviously end up being higher with summer camping trips and whatnot but I think it's very unlikely I'll put more than 10k kms on in a year. Like you, it doesn't mean I'm not driving my truck at least 5 days a week. :D

Thanks for the update. Sorry for your loss, man. :(

Threre is some history of faulty UR valve springs breaking and valves falling into cylinders. Sounds like he did find a good salvage engine, albeit a little pricey ($4500 US?). "What'ya goin' to do." Good luck on the fix.

Short trips are the worst way to use ICE engines. Get a TESLA truck thing, lol.

Yep, because it can't get the water out of the oil and never really warms up.
That is why I use mine on weekend trips that are all over town, just to get it warmed up properly.

Just to show that this is very true , I’m pretty sure everyone knows that the Chrysler K car was not known for reliability to say the least but my girl friends father ( at the time ) drove a 1985 Chrysler K car and had over 700k on it and it was still going strong . So even a lowly K car can be made to last by accident lol. Just a side note though , in Canada Tundras are few and far between for whatever reason , in my neighborhood I’ve counted 3 Tundras and without exaggeration 25 F-150’s , 18 Rams , 14 Silverados , 8 GMC’s and 1 Titan . I’m just pointing this out so you know how hard it is to find a Tundra 5.7 in the recycle yards .

Yes, if the Tundra 5.7 does you wrong, you’re probably on the hook for a crate motor. There are tons of Tundras here at the border at Buffalo/Fort Erie. And a few red ones up in Hope BC with Jamie Davis on the door. Lol

I wanted to chime in on this subject. I have a 2016 Toyota tundra SR5 four-wheel-drive with a 5.7 flex and a whole lot of upgrades including 1794 interior,TRD dual exhaust, ditch lights ,lightbars etc. I purchase the vehicle about a year-and-a-half ago from a car lot in San Antonio and the tundra already had 133k. From what I know it was one owner and the owner did all the recommended maintenance as did I. 3 days ago I got home from a little side gig with my buddy, and reverse my tundra into the driveway and parked it. I had to go somewhere about an hour later jumped in,turn and turned the key and it wouldn't start. What would happen when I turn the key was it sounded like a jet engine, none of the pulleys were moving but the air intake was sucking air. So I thought to myself must be the starter although there was no sign of starter failure I went ahead and bought the starter and changed it. When I go to start it, it didn't start in fact something internally happened, I could hear something break or grind.so then I got out, got a wrench and try to turn the fan pully and I couldn't do it with all my strength. I am a 250 lb 6 ft 2 man. I called my buddy over to see if it was just me and he couldn't either. I had it towed to Toyota in Austin they called me and informed me that the engine is seized up and i need to think about what im going to do. The dealership also told me that it would be 20 hours of labor to just figure out what went wrong. Of course during the pandemic I was one of many that got laid off and this is a hard time for all of us. The trucks too valuable to let go. I wouldn't have bought any other truck if it had a 133k. My friend's dad had a 2002 with a little over 700k with the original engine and original transmission. I don't get what happened I'm trying to wrap my head around it and I can't come up with anything.

That's what the dealership told me.I they also said if it was the timing chain that it would be 27 hours of labor just to start the job. toi want to know if a timing chain broke or a oil pump failure happened or what exactly happened.. I just watched a video on YouTube where a guy said that his 2016 Toyota tundra blew a rod through the engine block at 52,000 miles it was because of a failed oil pump. That actually was my going to besbe my 2nd guess. I'm heartbroken right now. I wouldn't have bought any other truck with 133,000 MI. The thing about tundras is that they're known to go forever and they hold their resale value.

They do hold their value and they usually last a long time but every manufacturer can have a bad day .

In the 6 years I’ve been working for the dealer I’ve only seen one 5.7 fail, and it was due to lack of oil changes. 75k on the oil the truck shipped with. That’s pretty impressive.

My father works in a field that works with a LOT of dealers(including Ford dodge chevy and Toyota) and the only 5.7 engine failure was due to low(or no) oil.
    Just ate the bearings

I have stumbled across (3) THREE 2nd gen Tundras with failed 5.7 engines for sale locally on Craigslist in about the past year. That's with me not actively looking for a 2nd gen truck to buy. Something isn't up to Toyota reliability. (I'm a Toyota fan 05 Seq 217k, 00 Tundra 240k, 05 Taco 219k, 04 RX 330 210k)

The engines could have a faulty valve spring. In 2010 lexus recalled over 200,000 cars due to faulty valve springs. I have an 08 tundra 5.7 and the valve spring broke in 2019 with 170,000 miles and I had to get a used engine. The place where I bought the engine from was selling 30, 5.7 engines a month and the person said most were from the valve springs breaking. Toyota does not acknowledge anything but there definitely is a problem with some.

My 2008 Sequoia Platinum had a 5.7 failure at 96,000 miles. Center main bearing and surrounding rod bearings looked like they starved for oil. No on could explain and it was categorized as a fluke. Toyota provided a 2010 factory fresh short block and I paid for labor. Now at 175k with new block. Almost 15 years old.

Looking for a ranch truck and I inquired a couple of weeks ago about a 2005 Tundra at Toyota of Boerne listed at $3K. Had around 197k miles. Dealer told me it was listed so low because the rear main seal was leaking.
