So I have am early 1940s Leland electric motor. 1/2hp 110/220v. 7 wires coming out of the case. I completely stripped down the motor for restoration for a project I'm working on. New bushings, oil wicking material, paint, soldered all new wires to everything (while keeping them labeled correctly, they were all the same color)

I'm not an electrician, I can hook up simple 110v stuff like ceiling fans, outlets, etc. And I'm good with 12v systems. This motor is out of my range of knowledge. I'll explain below

This motor is 110/220v. It has 7 wires coming off of the motor (no ground wire attached to the motor anywhere). They are all numbered, and I kept all the numbers intact when re wiring, and put new labels on the new wires. It was wired for 110v when I removed it from service on my old attic fan in the house I sold. The numbers are as follows

    T1-T2-T3-T4-T5-T8-T11

T3-T5-T11 were hooked up to one wire
T2-T3-T8 were hooked up to the other wire
    T1 was disconnected entirely

The motor ran this way, and I plan on hooking it up the same way, but I wanted some opinions or advice before doing so. I'll post some pictures tomorrow of what every wire goes too if it will help. Should I check the ohms on anything? Etc? I'm not great with a multi meter, but I own a decent one and can use it correctly when I have an idea of what I'm supposed to be checking for.

Oh and the wires are all different colors now (but labeled correctly) I stripped down a new dryer cord for the wiring inside of it (way overkill om the gauge). I bought it on sale years ago for $2, and finally found a use for it.

Ended up taking it to a motor shop up the road. He got me squared away with the wiring, and sold me a new capacitor for $4. Can't beat that. So with that said, restoration complete! This motor is the most silent motor I've ever heard run. It's a reverse induction motor and doesn't have brushes, no ball bearings, just bronze bushings with wool roving for the oil wick, and oiling gits for both bushings. I already knicked the new paint in a couple spots, but not concerned with it. Really happy to bring this nearly 80 year old motor back to life for another 80+ years.

It can be used for a wide variety of applications, but I removed it from an old attic fan/whole house fan from my old house. I couldn't get the actual fan down from the attic, so I just took the motor. I bought another attic fan for $50 with no motor (which out of sheer luck happened to be the exact model attic fan that was in my attic)

I'll be making a shop fan with it. Attic fans move more air, and operate much quieter than any shop fan you can buy from the store. Most store bought shop fans have large, skinny blades that "cut" the air, and it makes alot of noise, attic fans have huge, wide blades, angled in a way that they move air quietly. Here is the fan I'm about to restore and build a nice wooden frame for, which will also double as small table/horizontal surface to clutter up with random stuff.20220630_154619.jpg

Oh crap. I thought that was for your lathe. Lmao. Too much 10W-40

This is a little 1/2 hp motor, my lathe has a 5hp Robbins & Myers motor

I'm ready to start restoring it though. Hopefully I can have it done by the end of the year.

That's pretty damn funny. Maybe I can take those beer cans and turn them into cool little oiler cans :monocle:

If I do, I'll send you one

Isn’t the lathe from WWII era as well?

I couldn’t gut the rest of them man. They went down the sink. Probably better oiler cans for sure.

Yes sir, ordered in 1942, completed and delivered in July 1943. De greasing and paint stripping is going to be the worst part. 20220303_114251.jpg

Got the fan 99% finished, just need a handle and some kind of guard to keep stuff out of the blades (wheels are on but I took these photos beforehand). But it works great, and puts out more air than any shop fan I've ever come across. Extremely quiet when running too. Only downside is how damn heavy it is. Probably gonna get a fold down handle like what's on my generator to get some leverage on it.
