What have you been seeing for temperatures? They should be pretty low.

With Nick's cooler installed, I've yet to go over 195F. The ambient hasn't been the highest this year in Oregon, but I've towed in 85-90F.

4,000 pounds with ambient temp of 91°, max trans temp was 202°, trip was @ 200 miles T/H in D, S mode in 4 for long pulls uphill.

Does cruise control have any affect in regards to shift points and trans temps when in T/H? Read something in the forum that gave me the impression using cruise negated any positive effects of T/H.

I can't find the post. So many threads, so little short term memory. :annoyed:

Not only can I not remember things I'm lazy and use cruise when conditions permit.

The cat protection plates trapping heat was a concern of mine. I haven't towed since installing. I'm wondering if this contributed to OP's event.

I had that appointment on Tuesday so yes it was yesterday from the time of this post you made.

Okay here’s a list of what I learned and what I’ll be doing.
I made the mistake of trying to haul in D some of the time and got considerably better gas mileage but it was because the transmission was working way too hard. I had them take the plates off and grab a sample of the transmission fluid and they said it was fine and they showed it to me. Normal color and no burnt smell. Also they did not even make mention of the plates being there contributing to overheating it and were impressed with the plates. @Classy63 I’ve been going to this dealership for 15 years and the lead tech supervisor I’ve known for quite a few years and he has the same rig. He conceded that the manual as has been discussed here on this thread is vague and less than optimal to say the least. Though they normally don’t install transmission coolers they’re going to go ahead and put together a set up for me so that it will be dealer installed. They cannot use the original ones for pre-19 after he looked into it so they’re going to research and put together a price for me on other components instead. If it’s not sticker shock I’ll do it, and I’ll keep you guys posted. Even though I have a 10 year 125K #Warranty I believe putting in the transmission cooler is a wise investment.

This is a dumb problem that Toyota made… I am glad to hear they are adding a transmission cooler to fix this.

I would have been VERY surprised if it was heat build up due to the plates

Although I don't have the cat plates I can add that ambient temps don't change my trans temps much at all. Between 35 - 95*f I'm not seeing a difference.

I tow(very rarely) in s5. When using d, she will shift into 6th and then slowly decelerate from air drag and then downshift to 5th, so it's pointless to tow in d. (Speed around 60. 4000lb)

Towing in s4 is actually quite exciting because of all that ample power. I bet 5.7 is even faster. It's probably best to just tow in 5 and click into 4 when needed. You probably don't need all that torque going on flat terrain constant speed.

I haven’t noticed any issues. 2016 crewmax, towing in 100+F heat and mostly flat with some rolling hills, most of the time in S4 with a little time in S5 and temps stayed around 205-215 when I kept the converter locked up(90+% of the time).
Long uphills see maybe 235-240 if the converter isn’t locked up; I just downshift to S4 or S3 typically anyway to keep that from happening.
I have the full Valhalla kit including front skid, and tow a ~7,000lb travel trailer. Temperatures are checked with OBD Fusion when towing; these trucks are far happier revving under load than lugging along at low rpm’s.

Right, so still curious if the cat plates will cause overheating w/o the auxiliary cooler like OP.

Off to a good start. Travel trailer TPMS and a rear camera/monitor system are also a must. The anytime backup camera mod is important to see if the trailer is still there. (JK) It is very handy to watch as you're going forward to see how close the truck comes to the trailer while making tight turns. One drawback of the Tundra's tight turning radius is it can get very close.

I just upgraded the original tires to Goodyear Endurance with Steel stems. The plan is for a TPMS system, but I'm not as concerned now that I upgraded the tires to something that isn't prone to blowing up.

We talked at length about it and he did confirm that you’re able to tow but definitely at the expense of the mileage. He said if you want to tow with the tundra you just accept the fact that it’s 8 to 10 miles a gallon with any significant load. Otherwise it’s just too hard on the transmission like is being discussed.
