My brother is looking to get himself a different vehicle but we're not able to think of many that will fit his needs so wanted to check if anyone can think of any options I've forgotten.

He's looking for a 4x4 SUV (first choice) or pickup (second choice) with a naturally aspirated engine and a manual transmission. He's open to buying used as he doesn't want something too new or with too much technology. Doesn't have to be a Toyota but preferably something reliable so most likely something Japanese.

The only thing I can think of that meets these criteria is 2/3 Gen Tacoma, earlier 4R and FJ Cruiser but I wanted to check if you guys can think of anything else that I'm forgetting.

(I put this thread in off topic rather than other Toyota vehicles as he's open to other brands such as Honda, Mazda or Suzuki.)

A Tacoma, Hardbody, frontier, or some Subarus would meet his needs.

Is he open to AWD or only 4x4 high clearance?

3rd Gen 4Runner, 2nd Gen Tacoma (will have to sacrifice either back seats or long bed unless he’s in Canada…), the Forester had a 6 speed until 2017 I believe and the Outback until 2014 or 15 or something like that.

Lots of options in vehicles with no ground clearance ha.

My list above assumed an AWD would be in play. If a pure 4x4, then the field really narrows.

I drove a manual Ford Ranger in college. While I wouldn’t recommend it, I decided to see what those are going for in this crazy market…
Wtf is wrong with people? $25k for an 11 year old Ford Ranger? Internet says MSRP on the top of the line 2011 Ranger was $29k new.

Third gen Tacoma also comes in manual and second generation Nissan frontiers come in manual as well.

Other than a Tacoma a Frontier is your best bet.

If he is looking for decent reliability in a truck with a bed, the Tacoma or Frontier are really the only two options.

I've known a couple of guys that had those older Mazda B2000 trucks; both were manual and both ran forever....

They are the same as the Rangers of that era iirc

My wife had one back in 2005; she loved it. She only had the 2WD version but it went pretty much anywhere we needed it to go. Never had any issues with it. :)

    Trying not to mod it
    Nope.

Most of the other posts have covered the big ones. If he's willing to pay a premium a Wrangler with the V6 after I believe 2014 had most of the bugs worked out and they started to have pretty good reliability. The sticks are a little cheaper than the autos as well, and if he's after bare bones no tech, that helps too.

If he isn't going to mod like crazy and is worried about the reliability he could always do an extended warranty for it. My buddy did that for his, and it's paid for itself already because his was a Canadian model with a wonky dash cluster that they had to replace. He's hoping the motor completely grenades before the 100k mark.

A little research on the Pentastar V6 will show they worked the major issues out and it's been in tons of stuff in their lineup and relatively problem free for several years now.
