Yeah I'd be happy to snap some photos of all that! Likely won't be until the weekend when I'm off again, though.

I was planning on waiting until next year or so to order a front bumper once more stuff was out, but after cracking the front up, will probably not wait as long so I'm bringing this up to the top.

Have a couple questions. To those of you who have done a bumper, obviously active aero becomes disabled. Does this throw a bunch of codes or cause any issues? Anyone having any issues with parking sensors being moved or anything?

Any new options out there I might not know about? I understand lead time is long.

    Thanks for the help!

Mine is currently throwing a code for the active aero. I think it’s mainly due to the fact that the shop tried to move the truck with the motor and everything disengaged and the truck flipped out. Now the motor is zip tied behind the bumper while we try to figure out a fix. The motor is still intact and engaging like it would but I’m still getting a warning on the dash. Maybe if I have Toyota clear it it won’t come back but haven’t gotten that far.

Hoping someone in here can chime in on how they got around it.

If you haven't seen it, Expedition Overland was running into the same thing with their truck. Their new video (link below) kinda documents the various things they tried to do in order to "fool" the truck and keep it from throwing codes. They weren't able to find what I call a "shop workaround." They claim to be in contact with Toyota and hoping to develop a solve with them for this. Kind of a bummer.

It is tied in with the CANbus just like the Pro Light Bar and would have to be disabled in the truck's ECU.

C4 does not powder coat their bumpers. That has the added benefit of doing anything you want to it. ie color, texture etc

I like the CBI and C4, but in my (slightly biased) opinion, the CBI looks a little better.

I've got the Baja bumper on the way and I'm planning out my winch mount options.

    2 questions:
    1. Did CBI have to clock the winch, or is there enough room to reach up and turn the clutch in it's factory position?
    2. Where did CBI mount your winch control box? I assume they had to relocate it. I've seen some of the control boxes get mounted to lower cross brace. Is that what they did for yours?
    Gracias.

I'm no more biased than anyone else who owns a product. Have you ever noticed that people almost always recommend what they own anyway, whether a content creator or not? I'm also not going to put things on my truck, whether free or not, if it's junk. The only thing I can't really comment fairly on is customer service, since I have a direct contact, but I've bought stuff for my 4Runner from them a couple of times before with no problems.

    1. No clocking.
    2. See the picture below.

The final bumper may end up being slightly different, since mine was a prototype they were testing.

I like the second one. I feel the straight line looks cleaner and helps hide some of that hideous massive grill.

I also have the warning, but I removed mine completely.

Apparently Toyota have told a couple of manufacturers that it's not something that can be bypassed. From what I understand, C4 are going to create a bracket for the motor so that it can continue to deploy while hidden away, and CBI have come up with some electronic trickery that will be ready "soon".

When I say "jaded" I should have clarified the reasoning: The few times I've interacted with influencers, it's obvious how far removed they are non-influencers. Influencers, as you know, have access to products with the intention of being an ambassador for such products. I tend to ask questions about how things were installed and/or technical specs. I kid you not, 3 out of 4 times they respond with, "I didn't install it so I have no idea" or "I haven't used XXXXXX yet (though they've had it for months)." They prefer to respond to shallow comments about how awesome things look vs people seeking to understand the products. I'll caveat this by saying my experience is mostly around with IG influencers.

It's been my experience that most influencers are in it for the glam of having a show truck. They tend know little about the products or care little about actually being an actual ambassador for the brand/product. I would like to think that I don't expect much. Maybe I expect too much. I really want nothing more than a cursory knowledge of the products & brands they attempt to promote. :)

I appreciate the response. I know you wouldn't put on junk. Most sponsored folks wouldn't. I'm glad that you were involved & present during the installation process.

Now back to the core content...

Clocking: I'm glad to see the winch is functional without the need to clock the clutch. CBI mentioned that any winch would likely would require clocking during their covert bumper video. Unfortunately, I'm finding fewer and fewer winch companies these days are designing their units to be clockable. Even the newer Warn models with the modern case designs seem much more difficult to clock than in the past...at least according to several forums. Not having to clock the clutch really opens up the winch options dramatically. That's good news!

Control Box: Thanks for the pic. I figured it would be best to mount the control box on the cross brace. I know CBI is running 10-12 weeks on bumper lead times so I'll have plenty of time to mock up my mounting location & layout where I want to move my coolant lines. I'm looking forward to seeing CBI's final production design.

    Thanks for your response.

That makes a lot of sense.

Are you sure you have to clock the covert? I've not installed it, but I took a close look and it appeared the winch mounts to the base.

I assume the two bumpers (Baja & Covert) utilize the same frame tie-in/winch mount plate design. In CBI's Covert Bumper install video, at 16:52 they mention that you'll have to clock the winch for that bumper. That's why I thought you might have to clock the winch for the Baja bumper as well. Granted...that video was posted back in April and the bumper was a prototype so the design may have changed since then.

I think the winch mounts are the same, but don't quote me on that.

It sounds as though the only benefit to clocking is to get the clutch more accessible, rather than it being a requirement for install. I can still turn the clutch with it sitting on top, but I also don't have particularly wide arms:

    upload_2022-7-1_12-59-18.jpg

I guess if you're more muscly than me then you'll want to either clock the winch, leave it engaged all the time and just spool out, or go with C4's bumper that appears to have wider access holes.

I love the looks of the CBI bumper, but realistically will never own any of them. I'll only be doing mild off roading around my farm, no serious rock crawling or anything, so my wishlist of accessories is just for looks.

Really hoping if CBI is able to figure something out that they'll share it with all of us and not just include it in their bumper packages.

Both are great. Literally anything you can do to hide that disaster of a grill is outstanding. Just make the bullbar with 12 inch round stock and it would even be better.

When I was investigating a new aftermarket bumper for my truck I contacted an autobody shop and they said that the new bumper would cause the airbags to not activate and inflate in an accident. I decided to not get the new bumper and I was not going to mount a winch in the front in any case.

When I have had winches on my trucks they were used 100% of the time to rescue some fool who took a 2WD vehicle off the pavement. If I was stuck in mud the winch would be most useful in the rear of the truck to pull me back out.

I'm 99.999% sure that your body shop guy is working with old knowledge. Airbag technology of the 90's and early 2000's is very different than today.

Modern airbags are deployed through a combination of acceleratomers (usually located in the cabin & detects rapid deceleration) and the ECU (when it detects emergency braking).

Gone are the days when the bumpers themselves had crash sensors (we used to call them "crush cans" but I'm sure there's a legit name for them) that would trigger the air bag deployment.

Also, the only difference between bumper manufacturers that claim their bumpers are "airbag compliant" or those that don't is the amount of money spent on testing. Those that claim it have spent the money to test their bumpers. ARB is massive company and spends the money. Some of their marketing material will advertise airbag compliance for their bumpers (depending on the make & model). That's about it.

Looking good! Did you go your own route on the lights or select from their options? Just curious.
