I 'daily' drive mine - I drive 15 miles one way - but I also WFH 2 days out of the week, and I live in the middle of nowhere in the Ozarks, so a traffic jam for me is some farmer on a tractor hogging the 2-lane road I drive on. ;)

This is a good point, actually. I've got a son about to turn 14, and he'll be test-driving in a year (oh Lord, help us LOL); so I'm in the process of looking for a cheap car (thinking Honda Civic/Accord or something) for him to occasionally drive, and/or me to drive to save some $ on. As such I may get one anyways...but if I save $50/month in gas...but it costs another $50/month for insurance, it's not worth doing just 'for cost savings.'

Right now until they change it, I work home 2 days a week, and my one way is around 25 miles, depending on how bad the traffic is, but the tractor jam is real..... can't get around it.... :eek2:
I think the idea is, just getting a beater for saving is not going to work. However, for your son (Lord help you and all of us) it would make sense, because that's one more car needed. But yea, good luck on the insurance.

Before the pandemic, my commute was 50 miles a day and I went through 2 tanks a month. However, because of the pandemic, my work has switched to 100% remote which has led me to barely drive my truck anymore. I have only filled my truck up 2 times this year and the last fill up was $160. I am fortunate to be in a position where I can work from home, but if that ever changed, I might consider buying a more fuel efficient vehicle or perhaps drive my wife's Scion TC. Although, the $50k spent on a new vehicle could buy a lot of fuel for a truck that is paid off. $50k would buy 130,000 miles worth of fuel for my truck. ($50k / $5 a gallon * 13 mpg).

I'm going to get my old car registered and start driving it again mostly to keep the miles off my truck but the difference is I already own it.

I drive 32 miles one way, 64 mile round trip. I drive my wife Toyota Corolla if she doesn’t need it. 35 mpg v 13-14 mpg. It’s a no brainer.

When I transfer my insurance to Maine I will save about 100$ a month so that will offset the cost of gas. No worries here. Tundra for LIFE

Everybody has their breaking point, but for me and my short commute (call it 1 gallon of gas per day), that limit is so high that our entire economy would be destroyed and fuel mileage would no longer matter - we'd all be in survival mode just trying to find food to stay alive.

Well yeah. For that reason I'll likely get one soon. I WFH 2 days a week so it's not a big deal; hoping they may let us do that a bit more if gas remains high, but I'm DoD; they're still getting over the fact that *gasp* people are actually MORE efficient when they aren't constantly interrupted. LOL

Yeah, tough to get around tractors...I mean, since none of us would *EVER* pass on a double yellow line. Yep.

    :)

    Almost identical to my situation.

I did the math and gas would have to be sustained above $20/gallon for there to be a 1-2 year payout or breakeven on a new car that would put my fuel efficiency at 2x or 2.5x where I'm at with my 2019.

Pretty much. My sister and her husband live in Seattle; and she drives all over God's green earth, as the saying goes. Were I in her shoes, I'd do what she did - buy a RAV4 Hybrid. But it doesn't make much sense given the amount I drive.

Wife and I both WFH since the pandemic. When I was in the office, we burned 80-120gal/mo combined.

Now our big trip is 160miles round trip 4x a month. Wife's scoobi-do gets roughly 30mpg on the highway so that's its job.

Guessing we're down to around 50gal/mo, and would be more like 20 if we didn't have the once a week trek.

At this point, she’s burning ~60 gal/mo, and I’m burning a bit more than that. I do get to take actual deductions for work come tax time, so that’s nice. Both our vehicles are paid for. I may get something small and zippy with higher mileage as a commuter. We’re about to take my truck on a trip to visit family four states away.

    Woohoo!! :spending:

I won’t and here’s my current list of why.

    1. Truck is paid off
    2. Live in an apartment where I can’t park two vehicles in a garage
    3. Don’t want higher insurance
    4. My 2013 is one of the most comfortable vehicles I’ve been in.
    5. I drive an average of 15-30 miles a day
    6. Constantly carry tools and supplies for side jobs
    7. It’s a truck.

My 2016 sits patiently waiting for our next Home Depot run. Right now it is sitting there with 17000 miles on it. It breaks my heart that I can't use it as my daily driver (because it is so comfortable), but, I have a 42 mile one way commute. My motorcycle gets about 31 MPG (6 gal tank) so I have to fill that up every other day. I have a Honda CRZ hybrid that gets around 40 MPG so that has been my go to since gas started getting so outrageous.

When are we got to break out the torches and pitchforks and protest?

Had a Tacoma and needed a slightly bigger truck, so I swooped up a 2017 tundra.

the one in Sugarland (99/hwy6) has chargers but no idea if they are super chargers. If that helps you plan your trips or something.

Before I retired, I commuted about 35 miles round trip on my bike for health. I'm fortunate to live in a place that has bike and pedestrian trails all the way from my home to downtown and my employer had showers and bike storage.

I had a coworker that was way overweight that started walking about 10 miles round trip to work. It helped his health immensely.

I get mileage paid out weekly for work because it’s cheaper for them to do that then to buy me a work truck, hence the 70k miles I threw on the odometer since January of 21. Plus I’ll be moving into more of a remote roll for my job soon. So the cost of gas isn’t really a factor for me, sucks going out but at least it’s going back in and some.
